Guesthouse UNILA, hotel in Shirakawa

Situated in Hakusan, 42 km from Kanazawa Castle, Guesthouse UNILA features accommodation with a shared lounge, free private parking, a restaurant and a bar.

The hosts were super friendly and welcoming. The guesthouse has a nostalgic flare, lots of wood, great atmosphere. We had ordered a veggie dinner and breakfast, and all was home made and good. We arrived after dark and after hours of rain on our motorbikes, and the hosts let us dry our gear in the main room which is much appreciated. // Our host also told us about the mountain road ahead which is forbidden for motorcycles. We were gutted but very happy he told us so we could plan our next day accordingly. // I would certainly stay again!

Minshuku Goyomon, hotel in Shirakawa

The 200 years old Minshuku Goyomon lies amid Ainokura Village, a World Heritage Site with centuries old Gassho-style houses and a traditional local community.

The host lady is very friendly. Though she doesn't speak English, she kept checking on us and made sure we had everything we needed The dinner portion set was huge, I was very full by the time I finished my meal. The highlight of the dinner meal is the charcoal grilled fish that she had prepared about 1 to 1.5 hours before the dinner served. The vegetables tempura are soooo yummy as well as the vegetable soup. The room is spacious and could easily accommodate a family of 4. The kimono set is provided along with other toiletries. Our bed was made of 2 layers of futton, and I should have asked one more futton to add extra comfort. It was a bit too hard for my back. I would recommend trying the bed when you arrive and checking if you need more layers. Don't wait till you go to bed, as you won't be able to ask the host as she has gone upstairs sleeping. Location wise, only 7 mins walking up from Ainokuraguchi bus stop. You will find the village is very charming and serene, not too crowded by tourists, the reason we chose this location to experience the real Japanese country life. In the morning, around 7.30 ish, there was a sound of gong, hit with longer intervals then followed by intense ringing bells from the Shrine-liked house just behind the house. The toilet is super duper modern equipped with all sensors that allow you to do and finish your business without hassle. The toilet seat opens automatically when you come in the cubicle. Once you get off, it flushes down, and soon after, the seat will close. We have seen this smart toilet before somewhere in Japan, but we weren't expecting to find it in this traditional Japanese home deep into the highlands. Thank you so much for the host lady for providing such a great experience for us.

The host family is very welcoming, the home has so much history and makes you feel a part of something special. It was an amazing experience especially with the host sharing all her knowledge on the local area and the food that was made for us, foraged from the mountain. An amazing experience that will not be forgotten .

Our hotel is a beautifully maintained traditional Ryokan which offered us excellent and delicious Japanese breakfasts and dinners. It's on the verge of Shirakawago within walking distance to the village. We had a most enjoyable stay although it rained a lot!

It is a beautiful place nestled in a forested valley and the history, design and construction of the gassho houses is really interesting. We were also lucky enough to get to see the annual test of the fire fighting system. The bus trip from Takayama by bus was a comfortable, scenic trip but there are a lot of tunnels including one over 10km long! There is some very good food available if you are prepared to queue, plus a number of small businesses selling freshly cooked Japanese snacks. Unfortunately the World Heritage Site is clogged with day visitors - think Bruges or Český Krumlov - and I expect numbers will need to be controlled sometime in the near future. Many people are from Japan, with foreign tourists adding to the volume. As a visitor you need to remain aware that the site is home to lots of people with many operating working farms, so be respectful and don’t enter private areas even if it offers the Instagram photo you have always wanted to take.

The place is beautiful and peaceful.

The place is beautiful and peaceful. The village is unique and well deserves to be in the Unesco world heritage list. It is surrounded by beautiful mountains, and I understand there is also a waterfall which we didn't get to see, but must be nice. I wish we could have stayed longer. The view from the observatory is breathtaking. Upon arrival at the visitor center and bus terminal, helpful guides and some refreshments can be found, and trips to other destinations can be efficiently booked and managed. The place has a luggage deposit and a rest area, so the village may be visited upon arrival. There is a shuttle between the visitor center and the observatory leaving from a stop nearby, a 2 minute walk from the bus terminal. We visited end of august and it was way too hot. There are rare, insufficient shaded areas. Water is flowing everywhere but we were told by locals not to drink it. Most places request cash-only, especially the Heritage-run stores. Every facility in the village opens after 11 and is closed around 2 pm, except souvenir shops which close around 4/4.30 pm, before and after that, there is nothing to do and nowhere to go. We stayed at the perfect guest house, and had a super-kind host who took care of all our needs.

    Loved it!

Loved it! Quaint little village with thatched roofs, cafes and shops to browse, friendly locals, such a cool atmosphere walking around. Would have loved to have longer, as we only had one night, and 3 hours to wander the village.

    the view is beautiful.

the view is beautiful. It is worth a day trip to enjoy the village in the winter. However there is not much else to do there. And every thing becomes a dead town after 5 PM. So either stay a night there, or come extremely early to avoid the crowd (if you have a car!).

Make sure to do your research on the days of snowfall if you qant to catch them with snow on their thatched roofs, because there's not much else to do other than explore the village. During off-peak seasons the town is in lull and not many places are open.
