Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

BrazilI understand traditions and am very respectful of the culture, but Japanese hotels in general should find common ground to be able to welcome guests with tattoos to the bath areas. Unfortunately that was a part of the hotel that I was not able to experience.
This was an experience I had never had before. Our room had an Onsem in the balcony with the most beautiful view of the forest. The room was the perfect combination of a western expectation, but still very Japanese all around. The dinner course that was offered was to die for and made our two nights feel very special. I was eager we didn’t have enough time to enjoy the common coffee station they provided for all guests, with great selection of drinks and snacks. The most fun part was wearing Yukatas to go around during breakfast and dinner. All the staff were super careful.

LatviaStrict check-in time does not look to be a result of housekeeping making rooms ready, bet more as a strict policy. Not accommodating. Not all rooms have nice views.
Very good service, nice private onsen, delicious food.

United KingdomThe internal layout and accessibility (western/Japanese style breakfast rooms, guest area, main entrance, etc) can be confusing.
The private onsen on the balconies, the rooms were phenomenal, the available amenities, room details were great! The hotel is perfectly located with a train station a stone throw away.

United StatesDinner course pacing felt a bit slow, but overall taste great. (breakfast actually felt more filling, but thats probably due to serving the dishes all at once)
Quality, comfort, and elegance of the room was great value for the price. Especially with the lounge and exceptional service (shipped a jacket left behind after checkout to my next hotel!). Would visit again.

United KingdomFood is included. The evening meal is a very posh fixed menu very Japanese which is ok but maybe not to everyone’s liking. The breakfast was Japanese, again not really for a western stomach. We didn’t realise you could order a European breakfast so I hardly touched mine. Luckily there is a lounge with free snacks and alcohol and drinks so we could eat there instead
A very high end hotel. It is expensive but worth the experience. The attention to detail is phenomenal. There is a private onsen looking out onto a beautiful woodland view. There is also a public onsen that is empty in the morning as most people use the private one. You are provided with kimonos and every portion and lotion you could wish for. The bed and showers were top grade. So although expensive I would say for the facilities it is worth it.

AustraliaToo strict with check-in and check-out times. The hotel did not seem to be full or even crowded, yet we could not check in before 3pm and when we requested a late check-out we were told it would be 3000 yen per hour. This seems a bit petty given the price point of accommodation, meals and massages. Also, couples looking for a quiet get-away might be surprised to find the number of guests with babies and children.
We stayed in the East Wing in a Japanese style room. The accommodation was luxurious and spacious, with views down the mountain from our private outdoor onsen. The hotel did not seem too crowded, however that might be due to the strict dining times allocated when you check in.

United StatesIf anything, the room we had didn't have a great view of the mountain. Most of it was blocked by a few tall trees. However, it is not really a concern as it might be for privacy reasons. Also, Karaku wasn't the cheapest option, but the experience was definitely worth it.
Location was about a block away from Gora station. Very easy travel to different attractions of Hakone. Our room was quiet, clean, and tidy, and the service was phenomenal. We knew breakfast and dinner were included but did not expect a nice fine-dining experience in a private room inside the on-premise restaurant.
