We were in Hohhot waiting to join a tour of Inner Mongolia, which is just as well, as there is not too much to do in Hohhot. The Inner Mongolian Museum was definitely worth a visit (even just to see the incredible size and scale of the building itself). The Muslim Quarter is very large and there are some interesting restaurants and sites in that area. After seeing many cities in China, Hohhot is certainly one of the poorer cities, which means fewer amenities and less on offer, which is actually interesting on its own. Expect to be a novelty if you are a foreigner.

A big city that felt like it lacked character in ways. The zhaojun tomb and inner mongolia museum were both slight disappointments. Zhaojun tomb felt like a normal park with no descriptions on the history of Zhaojun, while the inner mongolian museum has become nothing more than a playground for children screaming from exhibit to exhibit. The city itself is just like any other chinese city, easy bus routes and nice walking. Hohhot would be a good place to go on the grassland tours and to travel into the rural parts of inner mongolia. The city itself, nothing much good.

The Inner Mongolia museum is free and SO interesting.
The Inner Mongolia museum is free and SO interesting. It gave me a very in depth understanding of the mongol history and how it related to modern china. The mosque was not worth the trip in my opinion, but the wuta and daozha temples were really beautiful to see.
