Set a 5-minute walk from the Serdika underground railway station, the 5-star Grand Hotel Sofia is located right in the heart of Sofia, overlooking the City Garden. The room was large and bright, the hotel’s location was very central, and the staff were pleasant and helpful. On the day of departure, we had a very early morning flight and the hotel offered to pack breakfast for our kids to bring to the airport, which was a really nice touch.

Sofia is great! So many things to do and see there, nightlife is cool and cheap. The food is delicious (as in whole Bulgaria) and the people are very friendly. You will love it!

Sofia came across as empty and silent to me as i was coming from İstanbul. We were there for almost 2 days and we walked everywhere, didn’t use any public transportation and it wasn’t really that hard so i can say that the city can be explorer by walking, the main attractions are mostly close to each other. There are a lot of cool restaurants and cafes on Vitosha street. My favorite was Wok To Walk right at the beginning of Vitosha on the right side. The Social Cafe was also really nice, they have a good wine menu. The Christmas Market was also a good place to grab some snacks but it was really crowded.

What makes Sofia a good place to visit is its people and its food. Bulgarian people are down-to-earth, welcoming and resilient. Bulgaria still shows some vestige of its past. Sofia has been transformed into a beautiful European city while maintaining its green parks and recreational spots. Its new and modern subway system connects different neighborhoods and makes traveling from one spot to another really enjoyable. It costs less than a dollar to go from the airport to downtown. I did not need a car for my entire stay there (2+ months). Traffic could be congested, so using the subway was a much better experience for me. My favorite spot in Sofia is the downtown area - The National Teather, and the parks around the area. I like to visit various places in Vitosha mountain, Pancarevo lake and also Vladaya. There are plenty of nightclubs, bars, and restaurants all over the city. The food was great everywhere I ate. If you want to taste traditional Bulgarian cuisine, try a "mehana" type restaurant. Even though they often look like tourist traps, the food could be quite delicious. A small mom and pop restaurant, however, may be more enjoyable and the service would be better. Places to visit: Alexander Nevski Cathedral, National University, and the National Library, Theater Ivan Vasov, Vitosha Street, take a hiking trip in Vitosha Mountain, or walkaround Panacharevo lake.

The city is nice, although there is not much to do in it. A day should be enough. Do not miss the Free Sofia Tour! The visit is cheap altogether but pay attention to the taxi drivers which will do their best to overcharge you on every drive. Going out to the country is most recommended, the country is beautiful, but keep in mind communication with the locals is tricky since English is not spoken so well in this country.

Sofia is another gem among the Eastern European capitals. The downtown is green and beautiful, people are friendly and you can expect everyone below the age of 40 to speak English properly. You will manage to see everything within a few days, so it makes the perfect destination for a weekend trip. Also, I recommend the Free Sofia Tour and going out for a drink in the student's district south of the university.
