We went on a Monday which the guidebook says was a day of...
We went on a Monday which the guidebook says was a day of closure. You are supposed to book on the internet which we did not. You have to have the official guide. You wait until the group is ready to set off and all drive in convoy to the crypt. Everybody has an audio guide in their own language which is a 25 minute tape. The frescoes date back to the 9th century and are astonishing

Superb place but you need to book in advance as visitor...
Superb place but you need to book in advance as visitor numbers are very limited - unless you go on an organised trip. On your own you must have your own transport as the crypt is severl miles away from Matera in the middle of the countryside. Well worth it though.
