The views in Whinfell forest are frequently obscured by the trees but if you can go a few miles further into the Lake District, say to Ullswater, especially the southern end, there are excellent opportunities for lakeside and mountain walks near Patterdale. Cyclists seem to like the road over Whinfell. For walkers it is better to focus on Ullswater and Derwent Water - the latter is a real gem and worth using as a centre for a week or two of walking.

    Amazing place. Beautiful.

Amazing place. Beautiful. Suggest keeping to to the trail you pick eg by not looking down if raining! We realised the error of our lack of attention when we got ‘lost’, quickly meeting up with others, who had their bearings intact! Take spare clothes or wear appropriate clothing! We ended up orienteering to get back to the visitors centre, which involved a lot of water/mud and making new friends (and guides!) Great fun! And the boys loved the bike trails, equally muddy and wonderful, and they kept their heads up and enjoyed every minute.
