One of my favourite cathedrals.
One of my favourite cathedrals. If you want a guided tour, which I recommend, try and have Alan as your guide. He is so very knowledgeable and has a wonderful sense of humour. I tried to book a ticket and/or tour of the castle, but it was closed for private functions, like weddings, for both the days I was in Durham. Early booking is obviously the answer! What a building!
What a building! We don't like being charge to enter God's house so were pleasantly surprised to be asked, with no pressure, for a donation which we were delighted to do. It was certainly the highlight of your short visit to DurhamEricUnited Kingdom - 4.0Scored 4.0

Use park and ride into town, then pick up a local bus to the cathedral - its bit of climb for the less agile - the Cathedral café serves decent food and is no more expensive than other places in town most of which have los of steps. Check there is no wedding /funeral when you visit or you may have limited access.

Atmospheric, great sense of history & the many generations...
Atmospheric, great sense of history & the many generations who have worshipped there. I attended the Sunday morning service which I very much enjoyed. Listening to their choir was quite an emotional experience.

We also appreciated the Molton Brown bathroom soaps and body lotion etc. The shower was fantastic and one of the best on our travels for pressure and temperature control. The breakfast was delicious and they also catered for gluten free.
