    Definitely a must see.

Definitely a must see. Although quite small it’s certainly worth a visit to the old church and its replacement. The stained glass in the new church makes it stunning but modern looking inside. The original building although damaged has some informative exhibition and pictures inside and impressive ceilings. Although it wasn’t too busy when we visited (Monday afternoon) I can imagine it getting crowded at week

This is a gutsy move by the Germans, similar to the Japan’s Hiroshima Peace Memorial, leaving a very central and physical visual statement about the devastation of war not just on soldiers in arms but when everyone regardless of age, gender, creed ... is considered a “combatant”. The desire to erase destruction and rebuild, and erect artistic monuments to war and its “hero’s” is so prevalent few people understand the devastation. To have his plea for peace memorial in the middle of a city, occupying valuable real estate and not even charging “admission” is a testimony to the value the people involved in preserving this site placed upon the importance of showing firsthand to many people the obliteration of war. I would suggest visiting early in the morning or in the late afternoon or evening to avoid the crowds that simply want to have a photo op and not consider this as a “sacred “ site . I use the word “sacred” here not because it was a church, but because of the intent for the site to invite and provide reflection the effects of self righteous disregard for other human beings. It also, in a way, invited reflection on the current feeding frenzy of consumer consumption and the almighty, euro, ruble, dollar, yuan, franc, bitcoin.... and how as humans we can get caught up in not seeing the bigger picture of our immediate choices. Stand before this ruin, in the evening or early in the morning and as you looks at it and consider the significance of it intent to be left as is , imagine in its place just another 12 story building with clothing , perfume cellphone, and fast food stores. Hopefully you will gain considerably more appreciation and understanding of the intent and opportunity in having the ruin left as is. And, while you are at it consider skipping just one cocktail, or good quality beer or some cheesy touristy trinket and donate 5€’s or so to help preserve the structure and more importantly the message it represents.
