I arrived stressed and rundown after a traffic-filled drive out of London, among other things. The Victory at Mersea immediately put me in holiday mode and within 24 hours, I felt rested and had completely decompressed. The room was lovely, with a nautical theme, immaculately clean, in an elegant contemporary style. If you are lucky enough to get a sea view room, there is a gorgeous balcony where you can sit and watch the boats, and be hypnotised by the clanging of the sail bells and the strange and wonderful sounds of the wind in the estuary, which sounds like whale song. Special mention has to go to Maddie, who worked tirelessly and round the clock, always with a smile on her face, to give guests a top-notch service. She was juggling multiple things, including managing check-in for the rooms and running the pub, and never once complained or looked exhausted. She made everything a pleasure and couldn't do enough for guests. Breakfast was outstanding - lots of options, including full English and veggie, and eggs done different ways (royale, benedict etc), and was included in the room price. Bar is good fun in the evenings - great fish and chips and the all-singing, all-dancing Maddie also makes cocktails :) Great location on the seafront - West Mersea Oysters is across the road and the famous Company Shed a short walk away. It's a short drive to the vineyard and country park. Mersea itself is magical, Britain's best-kept secret as far as I'm concerned. I loved it so much I ended up staying an extra night and frankly, am already planning my return. If I could afford to, I'd move in....
