Lovely kiwi town. Good food, galleries and nature. We highly recommend the amazing Quartz Museum (NZ largest collection of NZ ceramics and also some cool international work). We stayed at the Braemar House B and B. Spotless, good value, charming building and lovely friendly owners. Even the owners chickens were friendly!

An old, historical town full of hidden gems.
An old, historical town full of hidden gems. We found vintage and arts lanes. Teh river markets were awesome to wander with pottery, arts, crafts and food stalls to suit all ages and tastes. A short trip down the road to a delightful cafe Behind the door on 4 at Upokongaro. Discovering the loveliest gin distillery was awesome - Papaiti Gin was sensational with lovely staff and devine products. Autumnal colours of all the trees and nature with birds happy in the trees along the river was refreshing. We haven't yet spent long enough in Whanganui and we will be back.

It's very easy to find your way around Whanganui, while there were a lot of cars in the city on market day, it's still nothing compared to the bigger city traffic! Great food places and had most of the usual retail shops.

We enjoyed Whanganui town, but since we were there just to attend a wedding, we didn't get to view a lot of different places.
Where we stayed, he wahi pai na te mea he tata ki nga whare kai, close to eating places and supermarkets.
Once we got to learn how the streets connected with each other, we could navigate better.
We enjoyed Trafalgar Shopping mall, the new Farmers walk-through in town centre, and the look-out at Castlecliffe.

Whanganui is an ol'River Port town that still carries that ambience. If you were comparing ol'Paddle steamer towns with an Australia vs NZ type contest, you'd have an Ecucha Victoria or Morpeth NSW vs Whanganui match-up.
Whanganui has the ol'Paddle Steamer "Waimere" still in operation & a Waimere Steamer Museum. Don't miss out on the War Memorial Tower & look-out, it's a musta, you can even get an elevator there.
All the shops are here for the gals & of course the wife bought a new dress for the Whanganui Races. We spent 2 nights @ the Riverview Motel in a self contained Garden Unit, serenity abounds at this establishment, it's old but still gold.

Whanganui is a great place to visit.
Whanganui is a great place to visit. Friendly, great vibe, lots to see and do and not very expensive. I have never had a bad coffee there! Saturday market by the river is a must, as are the parks and gardens, a trip on the Waimarie, the tunnel and elevator, arts trail, beaches, bike trails, museum and restaurants. Heritage Weekend and Christmas Boxing Day are REALLY busy with a ton of stuff on. The Boatshed in Aramoho was our favourite restaurant this trip. Only negative in Whanganui is the AWFUL driving - and we are from Auckland!
A great place, very peaceful. The grounds are beautiful. The unit is immaculately kept, very comfortable, and the hospitality was great. Home baked goodies, freshly squeezed orange juice from the orchard, and very generous hosts. Plus, a really gorgeous part of the country which is truly worth visiting!
Although this site says there's no Wifi, in actual fact, there is. It can be a bit intermittent at times, but it's a small price to pay for the beauty of this location on the Whanganui River.
It was absolutely lovely to spend a night at the Whanganui Seaside Holiday Park. The small cabine and its tiny but private bathroom was extremely cozy and warm for us: my partner, our puppy, me and the baby to be. Cabine and common area were spotless cleaned, and the bedsheets were smelling just great!
On top of it all, the friendly staff made our staying even more fortunate. We’ll definitely be back:)
For an English tourist, this place is like home from home. Located in the centre of Whanganui, it is like going back in time with an English colonial vibe. We had a big, spacious room with an excellent fan - who needs air con? Helpful, friendly staff, lovely beer garden, great selection of beers in characterful pub bar. I would definitely stay here again 😊
Having stayed in multiple hotels and motels during our recent trip to New Zealand, this was by far the best value for money. At check-in, we were assigned an upgraded room by the very friendly business owner. The room was extremely clean and well maintained with a comfortable bed. Despite the location being close to a busy road, it was very quiet at night.
The signal box was everything we had hoped for and better. Peaceful and well appointed. Overlooking gardens and the River Whanganui. Chickens and ducks roam the garden. A lot of thought had gone into furnishing this place. I wish we had booked longer here.
Cute house in a quiet little neighbourhood. Fully stocked kitchen including optional snacks and drinks sold a very reasonable prices. Preserved peaches are delicious. Hosts are very kind and accomodating. Plan to book here again when next in Whanganui.
Lovely host.
Comfortable, clean, and spacious room.
Ideal location as the property has access to a lake, which was a lovely walk.
We have no hesitation in recommending this as a place to stay, and we will definitely book again if we visit Whanganui.
Beautiful location by the river, the whole motel faces toward the view & gets morning sun.
Very cool heritage/early 80s styling (we like that kind of thing) and all very well maintained & clean.
Spacious room with very well appointed kitchenette.
My room was spacious and comfortable. I really appreciated the excellent support provided by Sam. He was courteous and helpful. Thank you for the recommendations on finding the best coffee in Whanganui. Hope to see you again. Cheers, Richard
A small and cute studio with absolutely everything needed for a very comfortable stay. Spotlessly clean, bright, quiet, private in a good location by Whanganui river. Very friendly hosts who provided a generous breakfast.
A really cool historic Mansion in a nice quiet part of town. The rooms were spacious with high ceilings. The staff was super friendly and even gave us free lemons and plums growing right on the property!
Loved the spacious room and bathroom. Very comfortable bed. Fantastic linen and heaps of towels. Kitchenette had everything I needed. Overall great motel with a hotel feeling. Very clean and quiet.
Everything perfect! Motel location,Rooms are very spacious, shower pressure is good. We didn’t wanna leave this motel. Owner lady is so friendly and helpful. Super recommend motel! Thank you
