Maria Baula-Schuh is a passionate artist, traveler, lover of dance, and adventure. Back in 2000, when Maria first visited Nelson, the funky, artistic vibes of the community embraced her soul, and she’s been in love with the town ever since. Over the years, Maria transformed this charming 20th-century heritage building into the eclectic, vibrant “Mistiso’s Place” you see today. Slowly, with attention to detail and extensive renovations, each suite was developed, while the dental office has continued to remain in operation on the main floor of the building. Maria loves to incorporate unique images and decor she’s collected from around the world, blending cultures, colors, & traditions in every room she designed. Each suite reflects a touch of autumn’s warmth with rich golden & terra cotta accents to enhance the sense of playfulness, creativity, and joy. The word Mistiso (mist-tee-so) comes from the Spanish word “mestizo,” which translates into “hybrid’; a person of mixed ancestry, reflecting the theme found within Maria’s eclectic establishment. In 2017, Morning Star was born. Maria loves to connect & is committed to serving and creating happy memories for our guests

The house itself was built in 1926, and earned Nelson’s “Heritage Building of the Year” award when it was refurbished in 2001. I love to incorporate unique images and decor I’ve seen during my travels into each room. Each suite reflects a touch of autumn’s warmth with deep golden and terra cotta accents, and I often bring back souvenirs from my trips abroad to decorate and give each space its own special charm! Mistiso comes from the Spanish word “mestizo,” meaning “hybrid” or “mixed,” and Mistiso’s Place reflects that theme in its blend of cultures, color, and traditions.
