Hotel Messana is remarkable place to stay. (As the listing explains, 'Messana' was the ancient Doric name for what we now refer to as the city of ancient Messene.) Note also that, nowadays, whether you're using a driving app or a fold-out map, the existing town is typically labeled as Mavromati. The hotel is rustic and absolutely beautiful -- perfect for the setting. Yet at the same time, it is very comfortable. And Maria is an extraordinary host -- always friendly and helpful. It is therefore no surprise that the breakfasts were likewise extraordinary. There is also a restaurant ~250 ft away that serves very good lunches and dinners. The hotel a reasonable walk down to the ancient archaeological site of Messene. There is slight hill, so some people may prefer need to drive, and use the nearby gravel parking lot. But either way, if you are at all interested in history of Hellenistic Greece, ancient Messene is a must see: We were amazed by the archaeological site. And as Lonely Planet says, this is probably the most unrated archaeological site in all of Greece. The site is expansive, the signage is great (in both Greek and English), and the free map from the ticket office is very helpful. It might be worthwhile to also print out a bit of reference material before your trip (eg. a site map and some commentary on the various structures that are or were on the site. So again, Hotel Messana is the ideal place to stay for your visit the archaeological site. This hotel is also a great place to stay if you're anywhere nearby -- whether going to or from the Mani, or to or from the ancient temple of Apollo Epikouras, or just casually motoring around the Peloponnese. We would definitely stay here again.
