Set 16 km from Salammbo Tophet Archaeological Museum, Royal Victoria - Ex British Embassy offers 4-star accommodation in Tunis and has a shared lounge, a terrace and a restaurant. In my opinion, this has to be the best place in the whole of Tunis! Over the course of six weeks we stayed in around 22 different hotels, and this one is one of my favorites. Our room was huge and we had not one but two balconies (each with a different aspect) looking out over the square. Fabulous for people watching - there was always something happening in the square below. The reception staff were exceptionally friendly (they tried to teach us one or two new Arabic words each day, which had amusing consequences. Despite the central location, the room was quiet at night. Amenities were spacious and with quirky painted walls. Best of all, the hotel was located at the edge of the medina, which offered hours and hours of exploration and getting lost. Many options for food in surrounding streets as well. Buffet breakfast was on the average side (don't forget to ask for an omelette or fried eggs if that's your thing.

Boasting a terrace and views of city, El Patio Courtyard House is a guest house set in a historic building in Tunis, 17 km from Salammbo Tophet Archaeological Museum. This place exceeded by far our expectations. From the moment we stepped in, we felt like we went back in time. This boutique hotel is decorated with very very good taste, with antiques and lovely traditional items. The place is quiet, even though it is located in the medina, very close to the big mosque. The room, although not very large, was decorated in the same manner, creating a sense of peacefulness. We were welcomed by Ahmed, who was very friendly and helpful. When we return to Tunis, we will definitely stay in El Patio!

Located in the Medina of Tunis, 12 km from Tunis-Carthage international airport, Dar Ben Gacem is a traditional-style accommodation which offers free Wi-Fi access and a terrace overlooking the city. There are so many cute little nooks. When I wasn’t out exploring, it was great to relax with a book. The rooftop is lovely, and the location is convenient. Also, the price can’t be beat. Great value!
