Alta and her husband are super friendly and helpful hosts. The cottage is spacious and clean in a very peaceful environment. All you may need is there. The name rustigheid can be taken literally! Alta made me the best lamb curry ever! Can only recommend.

The area was very convenient to visiting both the main telescope installation and to view the stars from the observatory in town.

We came to Sutherland for the stargazing and to visit SALT and it fulfilled all of our expectations. RWC10%art from the stargazing there was not a lot to see in the town but staying on a working farm added to the interest on our trip.

Accommodation was basic, nothing fancy.
Accommodation was basic, nothing fancy. However it met our needs for one night sleep over to make our long trip from the Western Cape to North West much shorter. It was a PPH and all the shops were closed. The local Ok grocer opened from 16:30 to 18:30. Besides the Planetarium not much else to do.

Sutherland is a very small town; the people are very friendly, and we felt safe. I will without doubt recommend it to my friends and family. Thanks Sutherland. We visited SALT and it was great and a good learning experience. There are good restaurants and a hotel where we could eat.

We really enjoyed our visit to the South Africa Large Telescope (SALT) both day and night programmes.
We also did a lovely 6km walk on a farm on the outskirts of town. The flowers at this time of year were amazing.
Blue Moon restaurant serve up delicious home cooked style meals. I really enjoyed the sheep's tails.

SALT : the day trip is meant to be more interesting than the night, we only did the night and whilst it was interesting it didn't provide much detail and we did not get to see the main telescope.
Blesfontein self catering: The hosts telescope was the same size as the SALT one that was used for the night tour but the host allowed us to see much more and gave loads more insight + Q & A time.
Sutherland itself is quaint, we ate lunch at a car themed diner at the start of the town, which offered good food at good prices and then went on to explore the area, it's small but packs lots of history. The people are friendly.

Apart from the rejuvenating tranquility this small but pristine and friendly town nestled at the foot of the Karoo escarpment offers the breathtaking night skies only the southern hemisphere can offer. The nearby world class observatory of the SAAO with its range of optical telescopes offers a most worthwhile visit, both during day time and in the evening for stargazing. For enjoying some lovely and tasty traditional dishes the Ou Meule restaurant stood out.
The Settle Inn is a very comfortable homely place to stay with lovely pieces of furniture and knick knacks that make it homely. There is only one bathroom but there is a separate toilet. The location is right in Sutherland and it is lovely to walk around the quiet streets. There is lots to do in the area and Michelle, the host, was brilliant and very helpful. There is an indoor braai in the lounge area which we used as a fireplace because it was very cold. All the beds have electric blankets which is very useful. We had a great weekend.
The best part of staying in one of the fully equipped apartments of Malan's Rust are the hosts, their warm welcome and the care they paid to decorate the accommodation. My "Blu Door" was full of things, details and very helpful informations meant to welcome you in the best way. On the edge of the tiny village of Sutherland, your neighbors would be the desert plateau and the Milky Way, perfectly visible in the darkest night skies of sothern hemisphere. The most colorful, secluded and cozy homestay of my journey.
Location is stunning. Slap bang in the Karoo about 20km from Middelpos and 60km from Sutherland. Met by charming and most helpful hosts Len and Juanie who live in adjacent house. Welcome cold beers on arrival after arduous journey. Comfortable beds. Superb cooked breakfast the next morning. Ticked all the boxes for two tired bikers. Will definitely revisit.
Excellent location, within walking distance of main road of town. Kitchen was fully equipped and well appointed. Lovely clean bathrooms and comfortable beds with electric blankets and water bottles needed for cold Sutherland nights. Home from home and excellent value for money. Highly recommended
Great breakfast, with options for lunch and dinner. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They were conveniently located, within walking distance of the main street with restaurant options. Electric blankets, cosy duvets, and wall heaters to beat the Sutherland chill.
1stly, would like to apologize to the owner for arriving very late in the night. We lost our way in the Cederberg mountains and by the time we arrived Sutherland, it was midnight. Owner is friendly and helpful. Room decor is nice and comfortable. Excellent breakfast.
A lovely quaint and clean property! Value for money and lots of thought has gone into the accommodation. beds were extra warm with lovely bedding and blankets. as someone said it’s better than the pictures!
We were 5 adults. The house was exceptionally clean and well appointed . We enjoyed an indoor braai and Jack of the Karoo will definitely be my accommodation of choice next time we are in Sutherland
We booked en route to Sutherland and we're lucky enough to find Jack of the Karoo.
The house was lovely, our short one night stay was great. Thank you very much for accommodating us
Beautiful linen and towels, accommodation spotlessly clean, host exceptionally friendly and helpful in arranging telephone numbers and information for restaurants, sightseeing etc
Room has a rusty look, Beds are comfortable enough for a good night's sleep. The best part of this place is the location. Ideal for night photography and star watching.
Host was very nice and accommodating. Location was central in Sutherland. Breakfast was really good. We had dinner there and it was good. Decorated nicely.
