The Grand Hotel has seen much better days, but the room was clean and the hotel's location within walking distance to shops, restaurants and tourist attractions makes it an ideal location. It was good enough for the Queen, who stayed there with her husband 71 years ago.
Kingswood Manor Motel is centrally located and is close to the Zion Wildlife Park, the Whangarei Falls and Abbey Caves. Whangarei city and the harbour is 5 minutes' drive away.

Loved the Riverside restaurants and playground area.
Loved the Riverside restaurants and playground area. The Hunderwaisser museum was good too. The walk along the river on a good day and arty house and crafts in shops are delightful. Whangarei city is nice to investigate the many stores and restaurants some up little alley ways. Great coffee and breakfasts there too. It's a lovely city I've visited many times.

Your ID will probably be checked at least once by police.
Large selection of food places.
Apart from Hundertwasser Art Centre, Whangarei Museum, the alternative Quarry Art Centre and the Waterfalls, check out town has anything else you need or are interested in… a quiet town otherwise!

The place is pretty by the marina with shops and restaurants, but! Due to circumstances missed the lunch/dinner hours for eating out. All (yes all on the waterfront) restaurants only offer bar snacks during other hours. EG fries, squid rings etc. We wanted something more substantial. Many people were walking away when they found that out. This is a tourist spot for pities sake!
We had had a long drive and were starving!
Also no really nice accommodation. Best I found was 3 1/2 star Distinction Hotel which has good bones but was really tired needing a major makeover. Stained carpet, wall paper peeling off. I am a kiwi and embarrassed that this tourist spot has sat on its laurels. I know people struggling with covid etc but wouldn’t you want to do everything in your power to make your place more desirable. My view - if you don’t have to stop don’t 😡

Pembrooke was across the road from a lovely inner city bush. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony and listening to the birdsong. Supermarkets and eats were close enough.
We didn't have enough time to visit places though we know there are great places to visit.

We only stayed for one night so we managed to get down to the marina and see the cool ball-clock and the Hundertwasser (which is amazing) and have an awesome lunch (so many places to pick from!). Next time we go to Whangarei we will be sure to do the loop walk which sounds very interesting indeed!

We went with the kids to aquatic centre, flip out, action zone and the heritage park. Very good family entertainment and easy to drive from place to place. The motel is very close to supermarkets and various eateries. Good location.
The room had a lot of space and the bed was very comfy with excellent sheets (I'm very fussy about good quality sheets and these had a sateen finish).
It was a clean room with a good array of toiletries and most of all the motel had information about its "green" policies so a big tick from me! What was very important is that it had lights above the bed enabling you to actually read in bed unlike many motels where there's one low light in the middle of the room which gives out poor light.
We lived the location. So much to see around the area. Mary was an amazingly warm and welcoming host and the property and setting was stunning. We felt as if we were staying in a 5 star luxurious hotel suite. On our departure, Mary gifted to us some beautiful fresh produce from her farm. Breakfast was so good. Thankyou Mary, we will recommend your stay to anyone we know heading in your direction.
We picked the Quest due to its central location in Whangarei which made it easy to walk around town. The staff were friendly enough and the room was a decent size and clean.
There is secure on-site car parking under the building for a price, but be aware that spaces are limited and it's quite tight.
There is amazing urban art in Whangerei which was an pleasant surprise and totally unexpected.
Every moment of experience of Casablanca motel right down to the staff members being so helpful cheerful and most of all to the Koro that runs the place he goes above and beyond for all his guest he truly is a reward of honour for a while run business of whangarei me and my partner and our family will definitely be going stay everytime where in whangarei
Nancy’s home is lovely! She has though of everything to make travelers feel welcome and comfortable. My spacious room had a view of the garden, a terrace, an ensuite bath with even a towel warmer. And her kitchen was fully supplied! My best stay so far in New Zealand…you won’t be sorry!
This is the best motel in Whangarei. The rooms are decorated to the highest standard with a French theme. There are nice luxuries like dressing gowns, well stocked mini bar, breakfast in bed. Everything is extremely clean and the bed so comfy.
We will not be staying anywhere else!
Another fabulous stay at a great motel. hosts are lovely and accomodating too and spacious for us and our two grandchildren. Very handy to susshi and Thai eating places and the Shell Kensington. I love motels that have airconditioning in Winter!
The owners of the motel were very friendly and helped with a parking space that exceeded the length of a car.
The beds were comfy and the location was very central to Whangarei township. We will definitely stay again in the future.
Alice is a wonderful and very kind host. She went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. The space is very clean and has a beautiful view of the water. Would highly recommend for anyone visiting Whangarei.
Location was so convenient for us to walk down to the town basin and have a beautiful meal. The accommodation was so lovely and clean, super easy check in and the bed was VERY COMFY. We had such a good stay.
Definitely our go to place in Whangarei, we have regular hospital visits and this is a safe, warm and close motel for us. No fuss on check in and out, tidy units, good parking.
It is definitely a lovely family oriented motel I am definitely coming back to it when I come back to Whangarei.
Staff were absolutely kind and friendly👍😊.
