This is a lovely old town.
This is a lovely old town. The Abbey was under some repair but a fantastic, historic place. The rugby stadium dominates Sadly, didn't get chance to do the Roman stuff;maybe next time. The River Tweed is beautiful and there is good walking around its banks and bridges. The centre has some nice pubs. The Kings Arms was very friendly, the locals inviting me into their conversation. Everyone was so welcoming. The walk into Galashiels is about 50 minutes (ten minutes drive, tops). In Gala, the Great Tapestry of Scotland is a must see. I spent nearly three hours in there and still rushed the last bit.

Melrose is the 'jewel in the crown' of the Scottish Borders, with beautiful surrounding hills (Eildons) and lovely Borders towns nearby like Galashiels and Kelso. Borders folk are also very friendly and helpful. Sir Walter Scott's House at Abbotsford is wonderful and it's worth seeing the William Wallace Statue near Dryburgh.

Melrose is a nice little town with shops, cafés, bars and restaurnts, an interesting museum and a lovely historic site: the ruins of a mediaeval abbey. The scenery is picturesque with the river Tweed running through the town. As I love the outdoors, it was important for me to have a lot of hiking routes starting from the town. There are buses running from there, too, to all directions, so important places, the capital or even the sea are within easy reach.
I visited Dryburgh Abbey on foot and Kelso and Jedburgh by bus. A visit to Abbotsford, the house of Sir Walter Scott was absolutely intriguing. The rolling hills of the Borders are so beautiful that I would go back this instant if I could.

Trimontium Museum in Melrose market place is absolutely first class - about a huge Roman fort a couple of miles outside Melrose. Melrose Abbey was disappointing as most of it is fenced off whilst they carry out building inspections, and it didn't look like this would change any time soon. Dryburgh Abbey about 5 miles away is better. Abbotsford well worth a visit. We also took the train from Tweedbank to Edinburgh for the day which worked very well. Also visited the Great Scottish Tapestry in Galashiels which is an absolute must. Can recommend Provender in Melrose for dinner. Town centre has a range of independent shops and cafes.

Quaint small town.
Quaint small town. The Roman Museum is very good as is the visit to the Abbey, although, unlike last time you could not go into the abbey. I was there to begin the St. Cuthbert Trail walk to Lindisfarne. Sir Walter Scott's nearby home is worth a visit.

We love Melrose and visit often.
We love Melrose and visit often. We love browsing the small shops on the high street and they have a brilliant butcher in Martin Baird. A walk round the town is a delight, past the abbey, Harmony Garden and across the chain bridge to Gattonside - or up the Eildon's if you are feeling energetic. We also love Sir Walter Scott's home, Abbotsford which is a short car journey and the Tapestry of Scotland exhibition in Galashiels.
Getting to Melrose is relatively easy from Edinburgh Waverley station on the Borders light railway to Tweedbank, then a short taxi ride.
Clare and Donald were exceptional hosts, from the very warm welcome with a hot drink and millionaire shortbread to our farewell with Tablet Fudge they were fantastic. The accommodation was first class, very clean, really comfortable and beautiful surroundings. Breakfast was lovely (especially the fruit and yogurt), we also liked Boris the Cat! We highly recommend staying at the Barn at the Coach House when you are near Melrose. The town of Melrose itself is also lovely.
Excellent breakfast with a comprehensive choice. The evening meal was slightly below standard; in fairness I think everyone was a bit "rusty" opening up after the lockdown and the preceding fire alarm can't have helped! The room was fine, although stripped to the essentials to comply with Covid requirements. However we enjoyed the traditional ambience of the hotel and its wonderful location on the Tweed
Not my first stay at the Station Hotel in Melrose and certainly not my last. As I’ve said before, a great location, clean comfortable en suite room and brilliant staff.
Because I was away extra early and consequently too early for the usual delicious breakfast, I was given an unexpected packed lunch.
There’s a homely feel about the Station which gives a stay there an added pleasure.
The well appointed Dryburgh Abbey Hotel situated in it's own tranquil grounds next to the historic ruins of Dryburgh Abbey provided an excellent base for touring the Border Region.
The staff were exceptionally helpful, the meals were tailored to taste and with ample on-site parking and excellent Wi-Fi in all areas the stay was excellent and very good value.
One of the very best accommodations we have ever stayed in over 35 years of holidays. Beautiful location above Melrose. Extensive garden and own sitting area in it. Amazingly well decorated house - flowers, paintings, candles. Attention to detail worthy of a 5 star hotel. Owners are most friendly and considerate. Breakfast was exceptionally good.
To be honest everything. Just 2 minutes walk from the centre of Melrose, 5 minutes walk to the river Tweed. To say the cottage has character would be a gross understatement, the name says it all. If it came up for sale I would buy it in a heartbeat. If you are looking for a romantic break to rekindle or start a relationship this is the place.
Breakfasts were included as part of room charge. There was an excellent selection of fruit, cereal, juice, coffee, and fully cooked breakfasts--all very good! We also had an evening meal in the hotel dining room, and it was excellent. The staff were exceptionally helpful and courteous.
This is a small very comfortable hotel with a lovely relaxed atmosphere well situated in the centre of Melrose. If you are looking for a change from big impersonal chain hotels, I recommend Burts. The food is exceptionally good and service excellent. We enjoyed our stay here very much.
Very run down Hotel. Felt sorry for the Staff. Potential unlimited to become a very good Hotel but requires much investment. Breakfast was dreadful. Skipped the breakfast in the Hotel on final morning and went to Melrose to get something nice to eat.
The staff were top notch - so welcoming. The dinner we had was good, as was the breakfast - both very flavourful. And the location can't be faulted. Melrose is a lovely town with plenty of free parking, which was very near to the hotel.
Good breakfast and very nice staff. The location is good as it is in the center of Melrose close to shops and restaurants. The local bus service bus stop is a few yards away. Melrose Abbey is five minutes walk.
Good location—only an hour train ride to Edinburgh and right near the local train station. Very quiet, nice grounds, charming old building, very helpful staff, and spacious rooms. Ample on-site free parking.
A nicely decorated spacious, well equipped cottage set in attractive grounds and in a peaceful location. The cottage is only a short walk from the centre of Melrose. We'd highly recommend this property.
Location is very good for access on foot to Melrose and by car to Scottish Borders towns. Plenty of space in house. Wifi signal (mobile EE) is very good and stable. Kitchen facilities are very good.
Very friendly, helpful staff, very good mattress, sheets and towels. Very clean and lots of very hot water. Ample breakfast, very good parking and central location but quiet. Nice beer.
The rooms were large, clean, bright and comfortable. Food was top class and the staff were wonderful. Hotel location was perfect, being in the very centre of beautiful Melrose.
