This is a town of amateur opal mine prospectors and amateur and professional gallery owners. It tries to pull off its amateurism and ramshackleness under a badge of quirkiness (ie the self drive red, green and yellow car door tours).
Abandoned, rusted equipment and vehicles everywhere. Difficult to tell what's inhabited and what's not because so much of it is run down. Appreciate it for what it is and then get the hell out. 1 night is well enough unless you're prospecting.

where we stayed at the dugout was really nice, but the rest of the Ridge was too spartan for me and my wife and was unable to book a tour. okay to visit for a short time, but also too far to travel for a short time.

Amazing town, true Australian culture is still alive in this town for all to see and the most amazing and friendly people, sunsets of such beauty, so much to see and experience, easy to see why people love coming to Lightning Ridge I found some wonderful places to stay and eat in a town so far from anywhere, it's a true little oasis.

The cottage was walking distance to places to eat and the general shopping area. Also fuel station nearby. It was quiet at night and felt very safe to walk around at night. The only problem for us was the weather. We had a need to travel at that time and the temperatures around Lightning Ridge were 40 and over. This meant that it wasn't always enjoyable venturing out to places of interest. Pick your time of year carefully.

LR is a crazy place - just as one would expect from an opal mining community. Different from Coober Pedy etc as it has its own unique charm. Very friendly and open people. Easily worth an extended stay.

Loved Amigos stone Castle and the charming, witty and super interesting guide, Anita. She was so informative, dry and funny! A must see - spectacular!
The hot pools are certainly worth a visit.
Black hand mine guided mine tour, excellent!
Lorne camping ground, just a few kms out of town - a must see!
A drive around the town unearths a few clever stone, bottle and beer can constructed homes!
John Murray’s gallery is absolutely worth a look!
Great IGA - carries just about everything!
