This was our stopover between Graskop and Johannesburg and we did not really explored the area only stayed overnight. The room was a little bit outdated but overall this place has its own charm so it really did not bother us at all. The service provided by Sue and Belinda was really exceptional and the dinner was really wonderful, we felt spoiled!
Positioned on the edge of a cliff, Acra-Retreat is located on the border of the malaria-free Elands Krans Nature Reserve. It is a good stopover point between Johannesburg and the Kruger National Park....

The photos on the websites are definitely not a true reflection of how the place actually looks. Had I seen the surroundings and how dilapidated the buildings looked from outside, I would never have booked. I also arrived at "dead man's door". Nobody in sight for atleast 15-20 min. I actually thought I had been scammed. When someone eventually arrived, they were friendly and helpful.
Once I checked into my room I was pleasantly surprised. Everything was old but neat and tidy. The bedding and towels smelt absolutely amazing. There was coffee, tea, sugar and powdered milk available but unfortunately only 1 coffee sachet was given. I had hot water in the evening and morning which was great. I was given a torch for when load shedding starts. For the price paid, it was okay for a quick overnight stay. I do just think some effort needs to be made to the outer appearance as the location already looks dodgy. I don't know if I will book there again. This will be my last resort if other places aren't available.
1. The staff! They made our stay great despite some of the mishaps below. They are the main reason id consider visiting again, very responsive and Attentive. The lady who was at reception is a keeper
2. The property _ natural beauty, doesn't take much to enjoy the stunning landscapes and vast land. The architecture is also beautiful
3. Room size, amazing! Not your typical hotel room, Morethan comfortable large size
4. The food was also descent
5. Activities, especially horse riding
It really has the potential to be a hidden gem and our first impression driving along the road and up the hill was oh wow - this is amazing. COVID seems to have had its far reaching effects and I am sure with more effective management this could really be a magnificent destination either as a stopover or as a romantic retreat over the weekend. We will definitely be back - but only self catering - unfortunately the restaurant and management thereof simply isn't up to scratch :(
We had a bit of a hard time locating the proper entrance, as we arrived later than planned and it was dark. Once we found it and checked in, were surprised by the size of the room. It was huge! We were only passing through, so did not use any of the amenities, but there was a kitchen, full-size fridge and living room area. It was more like an apartment than a hotel room. The hostess was very nice and even helped my son pick some lemons from the tree in the morning.
The resort is only about 2.5 hours driving from JHB, a perfect place to spend for a weekend. Hotel offers magnificent view and staff were very friendly, the resort in general was neat and well maintained. There were enough activities to keep kids entertained, we did fly fishing, putt putt, bike ride, pool table and table tennis during our two nights stay. We also had our foot and back massages at the La Vita spa on site, it is a “must try”!!
Beautiful setting with picturesque views; Nicely furnished kitted out unit that is very spacious; Great indoor fireplace with wood provided and assistance in lighting the fire; Nice outdoor fireplace and seating area; Underfloor heating in the bedrooms made a nice difference; Buffet dinner at the hotel restaurant was very tasty; Great property with very nice walking/mountain biking trails and other activities available.
Very comfortable, immaculate, warm, just what we were looking for in a short getaway. Great self catering facilities and some added extras like tea and coffee, salt and pepper. Lovely walks available and there are plenty farm animals and wildlife to enjoy. Lara, the host, was very attentive. Ample and unlimited wood was available for the log fire which was perfect on cold winter evenings.
We were in the Self-Catering unit , it is really spacious. There was Load Shedding early morning, and when we left the Hotel offered us a free coffee. We thought it was a very nice suggestion. The place is VERY clean and neat. VERY quiet and restful. We WILL call again and visit again. We had a lovely 2 days. Staff is very helpful and friendly.
Portia, the receptionist was friendliness and helpfulness personified. She gave me an option of rooms, but I took the cottage as I needed the self-catering facilities. Equipment was more than adequate, 3 single beds in main room which was common to the lounge and kitchen/dining area and a separate bedroom with 2 single beds.
The owners canceled the booking when we were 5 minutes away from the place. We left stranded in Machadodorp. They did not even find an alternative place where we can book. We had to drive about 59km to get a place to sleep. They haven’t even called us about a refund
We went for dinner one night, and it was absolutely delicious. Complements to the chef. We were treated exceptionally well when we arrived at the Hotel. Fireplace for us, felt very special. The staff gave us special, attention.
The breakfast was fine. A nice selection and nicely laid out. It was close to the wedding venue I attended. My toilet seat was broken and this was attended to promptly. The venue has great views of the surrounding area.
The family units are large and roomy, and all you need for a short stay is all there. For the price we paid, we were OK. The hotel is easy to find, just off the N4.
