Location is peaceful and quiet, definitely recommend renting a car to get there. In between mountains the famous gassho Kukuri villages, onsen, few restaurants. Hosts were super helpful and kind with great recommendations. Wonderful view from the room and weather was perfect plus blankets are nice and thick! Definitely recommend whether traveling by yourself or with someone else.

The local artisan culture is amazing, with traditional craft-work and techniques that has been passed down for hundreds of years, and an influx of more modern artistic endeavors that is just starting to boom. The people are well rounded, appreciating traditional lifestyles while still being open-minded and easy to talk with. Highly recommend a visit; see the temple, try out the local cuisine, experience some woodcarving, and make some new friends. Both a mentally relaxing and spiritually invigorating location.
