Very good beaches in that area.
The pool is big, and even though not very clear, it doesn’t smell with chlorine, which is better than clearness of the water. For example down in the other hotel below on the hill, there is a pool which smells like sh*t and bad for your eyes, but with clear water.
There was not many neighbors (around 5 houses occupied max, I think 20-30%), so that was also a plus. Not sure how it’s there when there are many people near the pool.
The villa has 3 levels, but there is no reason for the third floor. You’d better lay next to the pool. There are only sun beds. I thought to buy and put a grill/barbecue there, but did not find any smaller and cheaper one.
The kitchen and the hall are on the second floor, strange.

Absolutely unique experience and one of its kind. Residence is in desolated place, in true traditional houses with minimalistic electricity. However, don't be fooled - everything you need is provided by wonderful, helpful host. Even if you need to break your vows and recharge your phone - there is a possibility.
PS. The mattress is very comfortable.

Very sweet hostess, very clean, good price, nice swimming pool.

I will come back for sure!! Thankyou so much!

We very much liked the warm welcome and friendliness of the owner. Great care and thoughtfulness had been taken over all the welcoming little gifts and goodies. Lovely position overlooking the sea. Very near, walking distance, to a good beach and taverna.

This is a very good accommodation in the center of Makry Gialos. We were given instructions how to enter, it was easy. Inside everything is perfect, well-arranged, clean, every necessary thing is there. The sea, a supermarket, cafes and eateries are 100 m away or less. Heartily recommended both for short stays or for vacations.

We went out of season, reason being work from April until November. It was just what we were looking for quiet, peaceful. A few bars for drinks, cocktails and a few places to eat. Most others were closed, but really did not matter to us. Ideal base for visiting Vai beach and other places of interest.

Beautiful place to stay, relaxed but with a good choice of places to walk, eat and take in the sun. Try The Green Beach, it has a small restaurant down partly on the beach. A lovely quiet place to read a book in peace with crystal clear sea.

Makrygialos is absolutely lovely.
Makrygialos is absolutely lovely. The main beach is great and is perfect for children. We ate out every lunch and dinner time. Fantastic selection of restaurants. Found them very reasonable; you can eat cheaply or spend more if you wish. You can walk around Makrygialos very easily and everything you need is there. You won't find nightclubs or noisy bars! It is very much a family holiday environment. You need a car to get there or a taxi and definitely if you want to do some sightseeing.

Lovely peaceful place with a safe clean beach and plenty of places to eat. I don't think that there is a more friendly place in Crete and I am only sorry that it took us so long to find it. We are going to try and visit every year for as long as we are able to.

It's a beautiful village by the sea.
It's a beautiful village by the sea. The beach is shallow and safe, so great for swimmers and non swimmers alike. There doesn't seem to be a lot of hotels, (a selfish but good point) although there were plenty of tavernas catering for all tastes. There seemed to be enough people about to make the resort seem busy but not overcrowded.
I have been to Elafonisi and Balos beaches which are more beautiful but the facilities and clean beach means that I would rather stay at Makry Gialos. We swam every day that We were there.
Parking can be a bit of a problem as the car parks aren't large or well signposted and one is up a very steep hill.
We had great food at the Faros taverna and at the Cavern bar. A very special mention to Ian and Sharon at the Cavern bar for great (UK) food and the warmest of welcomes. We actually watched Queen Elizabeth the II funeral in the bar, as it was the nearest we could get to being there.
Most of the beach is covered with sunbeds although you only have to buy a drink to use them. I have been to resorts that charge up to 10 euros a day for two sunbeds and a parasol!
I am loving the thought of spending more time there next year.
The biggest problem for me were the fumes emitted by the Chrissi island boat drifting across the beach between 10.30 and 11.15 in the morning when it left its mooring.

Makry Gialos gave us the impression of a bit shabby place.
Makry Gialos gave us the impression of a bit shabby place.
If you leave the location of the appartment , you come onto the main road where ( if you turn right into the 'village' ) some little shops can be found. Best to stay near the location of big blue appartments.......
We had an evening dinner in a restaurant near our accomodation which was ok. There is also a fish restaurant on the end of the small boulevard.
Fantastically renovated sheep barns. Each one was different but with a nice setting. We wanted to have the see view ones, but got “Skinos” and it was great. Anyways the sea is far, so you don’t see much. Inside its really well done and comfortable. Outside its so pleasant to stay in the shade in the middle of nature.
From there you can do a beautiful hike into the Pefki Gorge. The village down on the seaside (Makry Gialos) has a pretty seaside and series of restaurants.
Impeccable employees works in this hotel, so genteel and informative with the smile, ready to help you at any time you want it. My room was great, with comfy pillows and mattress. Sunset was amazing from my private balcony. Breakfast was also tasty with many choices. You can also enjoyed the Greek specialties and pizza made in traditional ovens. Unique experience. Reasonable prices for summer. Overall was all excellent and I would love to repeated again next summer.
Apartment was absolutely lovely and clean with an amazing large balcony facing the beach. Hosts supplied everything you could possibly need plus they threw in a large basket of fruit, olive oil and local pastries. The apartment is in walking distance to the main restaurants and even has a good taverna within 50meters. We have been traveling around Crete for 3 weeks and this was our nicest stay by far. We loved it!!
the location for exploring the south-east coast of Crete, the place is totally new (that's why there's almost no review - a real plus. deapina, the hostess is amazing and really welcoming, she was available for anything we needed, no matter what time it is. the kitchen is well equipped for almost any meal and has high quality products.
The location is excellent, 79 steps and you are on the beach. A lot of Crete apartments are quite rustic. This apartment is modern with all the facilities you would need to dine at home. Decorated in keeping the a sea side apartment. The outdoor shower was fantastic, ideal for a cool shower on return from the beach
The location, the food, the large elevated room with exceptional sea views and above all the genuine warm Greek welcome. This is our third stay as we go elsewhere in Greece and although we enjoy the experience, none of them come close Artemis. Efcharitoume Kiria Despina kat team.
It is a lovely, large and clean apartment approximately 5-10mins walking distance from the beach and restaurants, with a great views of Makry Gialos from the balcony. The hosts were very friendly. We highly recommend this property and we will visit them again.
We visited the hotel for the first time and our choice turned out to be perfect. Perfect location, amazing view from our room, which was spacious and clean. Perfect staff always with a smile. The breakfast is complete. It is worth staying overnight here.
Great location to explore east of Crete and it’s beautiful beaches (or for a break in a quiet place).
Easy access with the car.
Nice house with all you need. Beautiful view - nice balconies for the sunset/ evening and Amazing host !
Very good price/quality. The main advantage over many hotels is that it has its own beach with fine sand and easy water entry.
The staff is great and the food also.
The internet is fast only when few people connected (in the morning).
As a traveller, my stay at this hotel exceeded my expectations. The modern room I stayed in was a haven of comfort and style, boasting sleek furnishings and all the latest amenities. Definitely I'll be back for more days.
The hosts were very friendly, and the apartment is clean, huge, with a living room and a bedroom with a very size bed and a single bed. A big balcone surrounding all the flat and with a wonderful view of Makry Gialos.
We enjoyed our stay at the Ionio Star Hotel, a family run hotel in the traditional Greek style, which was what we expected. The room we stayed in was clean and comfortable and stylish. 100% agree to to stay again.
The whole place was beautiful and comfortable! It is easy to get around from the hotel, but the grounds are lovely as well. The room is comfortable and everything you need is there. The breakfast is delicious!
We had an amazing time with my fiance, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. The location of the hotel is great with an amazing beach and the pool bar was very close so we definitely enjoyed it !
My first time in Greece....... has made me want to return. I will treasure our experience at the hotel. Room was wonderful, spacious and very clean. Good and fair prices for everything.
This hotel surpassed all expectations with its charming atmosphere, attentive staff and excellent facilities. A delightful find for an unforgettable getaway.
