The position was perfect as my husband and I love ships and boats! We were upgraded on arrival to a room with a view of the quay! The bed was luxurious and the staff delightful!

The hotel is a bit like a grand old lady, which was very oppulent and grand but a little worn in places. Not to criticise, you understand just how I perceived it. The main body of the hotel is lovely with a grand entrance through the revolving door and a huge wooden staircase leading to the first and second floors.
Checking in was smooth and welcoming. The room allocation was on the second floor in an extended wing, probably added late last century.
The room was clean and functional with all I needed for my stay. The barman greeted my request for a pint with the news that they had no beer pumps in operation and only bottles. It's not a problem for me, and a suitable beverage was provided from the fridge. Later on, my return from a short evening meeting I sampled the food on offer in the bar. The fishcake was very nice, and the chunky chips had been well cooked. The buffet breakfast the next morning was simple, but good quality and fresh eggs arrived as I was dishing out my full English!
All the staff I interacted with were polite and friendly, so despite what you may read in some other reviews, I personally feel that the new owners should be given every opportunity to turn the old girl around.
