The Woodlands Hotel, hotel in Branscombe

Situation in Sidmouth on Devon’s Jurassic Coast, The Woodlands Hotel offers high-quality accommodation 6 minutes’ walk from Sidmouth seafront.

Friendly, helpful staff . Very accommodating., I had a phone call to say that they could provide me with an early dinner and cook something different to allow for my food allergies. I was so grateful. When travelling it’s often difficult to get a safe gf meal. Old , creaky but lovely hotel. Very clean , decor beautiful. Bathroom perfect, no dodgy silicone, or dirty corner, often found in old hotels. This didn’t have anything like that! Also ideally situated, within easy walking distance to town centre and beach.I’d go back!

Bedford Hotel, hotel in Branscombe

Set on Devon’s Jurassic Coast, Bedford Hotel is located on Sidmouth’s seafront. It has individually designed rooms with flat-screen TVs, limited free parking and a restaurant overlooking Lyme Bay.

I always enjoy my stay at the Bedford. The location of the hotel is very convenient, and the room I usually have with the large balcony is perfect for me as a solo traveller. The staff are so nice and always friendly and helpful. I don't usually eat in (except for breakfast) but this time I had lunch and dinner there as well and all the food was delicious.

I would imagine Branscombe would once have been a pleasant...

I would imagine Branscombe would once have been a pleasant little community but now it appears to be a lock up and leave village which is really sad. Like so many other small village dotted around the U.K. there seems to be no sense of community, probably bustling in summer months with holiday makers. There is a lovely walk from the village down to the coast along the river side part way. There are footpaths but some are hidden. A quiet spot for an early spring break but watch the narrow windy single track roads and pray you don’t meet a lorry! There are great coastal paths here for walkers and it’s a nice spot for dog walks. The rooms at the Mason’s inn are impressive and comfortable. The little kitchen area in ours lacked cutlery, wine glasses, tea towels and a kettle. It had two fridges though and a coffee machine where you could get hot water. We really missed our cappuccino in the mornings for breakfast, the coffee provided at breakfast wasn’t great. All in all Branscombe is a nice place for a short stay.

We stayed in Branscombe because it was close to the location we were visiting the next day. It was a lovely village and the beach was only half a mile away. We could've spent at least two or three days there at the hotel.

Comfortable large double bed and large room and bathroom.

Comfortable large double bed and large room and bathroom. But we gave manager a list of "niggles" (e.g. light in bathroom mirror not working) that were not put right during our stay. Decent food though sometimes overcooked. All staff very friendly and helpful including taking suitcases to our room - important when there are so many steps. Only outside space was immediately onto car park.= - no garden or lounge. Although we liked the hotel, overall we felt it was rather overpriced.

    Beautiful village with lovely walks.

Beautiful village with lovely walks. We took the coastal path around the cliffs to Beer, which was challenging in parts, and the cliff top walk back. I’m so glad we did it that way round as the hill back down to Branscombe beach was so steep there was no way I’d have managed to climb it. We walked up the hill to The Fountain Head pub one evening and had a fabulous meal; would definitely recommend a visit as apart from the excellent food, the staff were great too.

Very pretty mostly unspoilt village with blacksmith and 10 minute walk or short drive to the beach. Not good for cars so ideal for walking and photo opportunities abound. Some interesting history around the older buildings

The pub is situated in a very picturesque village. We were greeted by a very friendly man called Jose. He explained to us that due to staff shortages, a cooked breakfast would not be availabe during our 3night stay. Instead, we had a delicious breakfast with cereal, fresh fruit, croissants, toast and jam. All very substantial. There is a beach at Branscombe …half a mile away and a beautiful coastal walk from the church in the village. We also liked looking at the forge where the blacksmith makes lots of items.

We were very happy with the generous size of the room and a proper disabled wet room en-suite. The position was also perfect for our little dog. The staff couldn’t be kinder and more helpful. Every request was happily met and promptly dealt with. The morning walks to Branscombe beach was along a well marked level pathway and heavenly! It was a perfect retreat to unwind and recharge. We totally enjoyed our stay!

Breakfast was very nice. They did have a hiccup with our order, and we had a long wait for our food. However, they couldn’t apologise enough and extended our check out time, so we didn’t have to worry about rushing. A minor blip in what was a lovely stay in a awesome hotel in a great location.

The location - Branscombe - has been our favorite place to visit for over 25 years, and Smugglers Close was the icing on the cake with it far more than we expected as we had not stayed there previously.
