If you like a big city, San Jose is great. We live in southern Costa Rica and only go to San Jose for doctor visits and shopping. It's best to take a taxi or Uber in San Jose. The traffic is crazy. Be sure to use the WAZE app instead of Google for driving around. It stays more up to date.

I did a tour for the first two weeks of the volcano area, rain forest, Caribbean, and then the Pacific side of the island. During the tour, we also ziplined, rode horseback, white water rafting, soaked in hot springs, and hiked the rain forest and volcano areas.
When the tour ended I stayed for another 10 days in downtown San Jose and did day trips out of the apartment.
People are family-oriented, friendly, and supportive. You can drink the water and use US electric devices. Go, you will love it.

We stayed here on our last night but wished we hadn't.
We stayed here on our last night but wished we hadn't. The hotel was good but there was nothing special about the city and we would have preferred to be back in Alajuela where we stayed on the first night. There was much less traffic there and lots of different birds in the trees. The park in San Jose only had grackles.

There is plenty to do in San Jose and the surrounding area.
There is plenty to do in San Jose and the surrounding area. Three places to recommend: the Jade Museum, the Post Office Museum and Lankester Botanical Garden on the road to Paraiso. The Jade Museum is a revelation - it is in a new building and has a wonderful exhibition about the Pre-Colombian inhabitants of Central America. Don't be put off by its title - it is not a museum of dusty cabinets full of jade objects. Just to the right of the entrance to the Central Post Office is a museum with displays of various themes - space, calypso, biodiversity - illustrated with stamps from all over the world. The Lankester Gardens is a gem. It's a centre for the study of orchids so visit at the right time of year, e.g. March, when many are in flower. The gardens are beautifully laid out and very well cared for.

Great city.
Great city. Nice and friendly people with plenty of places to visit, especially their natural parks. Food is good, and the water is safe to drink in the city. Although the locals warned me to be cautious but I felt safe.

We were in San Jose for 2 days; meeting a group coming in from the USA to walk The Camino de Costa Rica so met our outfitter and guide. We visited the Jade Museum and would have gone to the Gold Museum if we had time. We did a long walk in the city to visit a famous hotel ( Grano de Oro). It's a busy city during the day and we were warned not to walk alone at night.
Absolutely amazing staff! Especially Veronica and Jorge (and one other young woman whose name I forget!) who went above and beyond to help us book things and get where we needed - we were so impressed with them we changed our booking on return to San Jose to stay with them again!
Nice hotel feel with a little plant garden area, definitely get the upgraded room as there is more light and the rooms are more spacious.
Comfortable beds, good breakfast.
This place changed our whole holiday because of how good the staff were!
The night was confortable as well as the uncomplicated check in. For all sorts of questions about San Jose and travaling around Central America
we could talk to the very friendly English speaking host of the In The Wind Hostel and also to other travalers and guests in the lovely atrium garden while enjoying the amazing pancake breakfast. In all it´s an ideal and safe place to start your jurny in San Jose or even in Costa Rica, if your not looking for some luxary hotel.
A fantastic family run small hotel. The rooms are very clean and comfortable set around a inner courtyard filled with lovely plants and flowers. Doña Aída is a wonderful host who treats you like a member of her family. She is a wealth of information and can help you with anyrhing you need to sort out. The hotel is in a great location a few minutes walk from the main shopping area of downtown San Jose with great restaurants and a cash machine literally round the corner.
Best hostel in Costa Rica hands down. 4 weeks spent here overall..Wonderful family, I wish I had their love /hoapitality back home. Its quiet, lovely communal area, wonderful breakfast. Great shower, lovely guests. Its awesome. I love it, booked an extra 3 nights. I'm easily pleased but this is the de-facto place to stay I'm San Jose should you be looking for a dorm bed. David is just the best, lovely wife and children. I'll miss it terribly. Thank you David and co.
Loved the central location to San Jose, the beautiful gardens surrounding the hotel and amazing views of the city from the pool area. The hammocks were delightful way to spend a lazy afternoon. The rooms were beautifully appointed, food was tasty and I truly appreciated the free shuttle to and from the airport. I enjoyed staying there and highly recommend a stay however, be aware there are always people in the entrance due to tour company travelers.
Rooms were plenty spacious and you could not ask for a more central location. We were only in San Jose for a day but we were able to walk to see everything. Also the breakfast was UNREAL - so good and so many options. We also had a drink at their bar after are long flight. The staff was very welcoming and nice. It’s was a great start to our Costa Rica trip and even though we were there for only one night, the hotel left a really welcoming impression.
Great little property close to downtown - easy access to public transportation. The owners of the property made us feel very welcome - the rooms are small but have all the essentials that you need for a stay in San Jose - very comfortable beds, well appointed bathroom and the in room safe. A delicious breakfast was also included in the room rate - with the option to purchase more if you so desire - but bread, jam and poached eggs were great.
I had to do a very late check in, there is no official front desk, so the guy waited until almost 11 for us. We were there for 2 days and the second night I accidentally broke the key in the door. So the guy had to get up and open it for us every time without complaint. I used to live in San Jose and the location is great because it's downtown, but not in the "gross"part of downtown. It is very quiet, very clean and overall a great expirence.
The room was spacious for just one person, everything very clean. the breakfast was lovely and the area where you go to eat is really nicely decorated and has lovely interior. the staff were very kind and friendly. I mostly used this as a place to stay whilst recovering jet lag and before heading to elsewhere in Costa Rica but the area was the only nice and safe area in San Jose with lots of cool bars & restaurants.
Lovely modern facade and reception area. Room and bed were both large and comfortable and the room was very clean. I would definitely recommend the rooftop restaurant at the hotel - San Jose is not easy to navigate at night so we ended up eating there both nights and appreciated having a place with good food that we could rely on (it also has a great view)! The location was very central.
Great location in Barrio Escalante, the Hipster district of San Jose with many great restaurants and a farmers Market on Saturdays basically next door. The hotel was decorated beautifully with traditional Costa Rican masks and the rooms were clean and spacy. The breakfast was exceptional with Omelettes freshly made and fresh fruit, even pancakes with different toppings. Wow!!!
Breakfast was good, room was great! Location was a little tough to find as the roads in San Jose are not marked. We was told to use "Waze" instead of other GPS and as long as you loaded it in wifi area with next location before leaving hotel it worked great. Their Italian restaurant located in front of hotel was best Italian food I have ever had and good prices.
This is my 2nd time staying at Oasis. I love it's proximity to the Tracopa Station and Downtown.
If you are traveling in Costa Rica and use the best bus (with air conditioning), then there is no reason to stay anywhere else.
I cannot than you enough Mari for providing me a wonderful space in which to relax on a rooftop in San Jose. 🤙🏽
The hotel is a beautiful old building very close to the centre of San Jose. There are good restaurants and bars close by. I read previous reviews worrying about the area but in our view it felt very safe and comfortable. The hotel was very clean and we had a lovely room with balcony. Good breakfast and helpful staff
It's in downtown San Jose so it's close to great food and transportation. The staff went over and beyond to help me so much I booked 2 more nights. Across the street from the jade museum, this oasis always had a soft breeze blowing in with beautiful plants hanging around. Comfortable beds with hot water!!
Nice location in one of the prettiest neighborhoods in San Jose, within easy walking distance of the downtown area, the Teatro Nacional and the other sites to see. The rooms were clean enough and the breakfast area was pretty neat, with lots of plants growing indoors.
The hotel was a good location for our needs. It had free parking in a secure lot. A short, easy walk to downtown San Jose and restaurants. The rooms were basic, but clean and comfortable. The outdoor area was nice, and my group enjoyed the hot tub.
Hotel is well located close to downtown San Jose at walking distance from parks, restaurants and museums. Parking is closed gate and there is 24h security, which helps with safety. Wifi was really good and breakfast had a lot of variety.
