This was such a great stay! Simon and Yumiko, the owners of this small Guesthouse are such lovely and inviting people. Simon met us at Kii-Tanabe station at our pre-discussed time, and drove the 25 min to the remote guesthouse. The atmosphere around the property is serene and so quiet, such a good change in pace compared to Osaka! Simon helped us with our Kumano Kodo walking plan, and then the next morning dropped us off at the start of the hike, another 30 min drive away. There’s a small shrine that you can walk to close to the property. There are two guest rooms on property, we were the only ones there, so it wasn’t loud. We had a microwave, fridge, electric kettle and heater/air conditioner unit in our room. They also provide coffee and green tea and cups! Highly recommend!

A quiet, peaceful little house set amongst rice fields in the village of Chikatsuyu. We arrived in the village a little earlier than expected and ran into the owner, Shino, in the street. The house is a short walk away from the mean street, set amongst rice fields. Small but comfortable, and being a small village, everything is close. Of note, it’s a 10 minute walk to some shops (with bakery and supermarket) and in town there is the excellent cafe run by Shino herself and some great coffee shops. We got the full meal package and Shino’s dinner was excellent and we had breakfast the next morning in her charming shop. The bento lunches provided were perfect for the trail.

We were very happy that Shino had already booked a car for us (no additional cost) for the next day, to get back to Takahara, where we would continue to walk the Kumano Kodo. The walk to the house from Takahara was fine, but very much down hill, so it would have been a tough start of the day walking up the mountain. Thank you for that! The food was really good, and we enjoyed both the dinner, breakfast and the bento box.

We explored this small pleasant village, and took hikes into the forest, what magnificent nature! The host is truly welcoming, we received a home-made dinner and breakfast, and had a chance to chat with other travellers. The tatami mats were very comfortable and not too hard to sleep on like in other locations ;) Once again thank you for the pleasant stay. Wish we could stay longer!

And snacks and beverage provided in the room really help me a lot because it’s hard to buy food on the second day. In total, I like this place very much.

Ike-san speaks good English and Mandarin and enjoys conversations with guests. The cooking is fun. Recommend to order the meal service since most restaurants close early and require reservations. Overall a great immersion experience on the Kumano Kodo.

Simon was so helpful with information about the Kumano Kodo. He helped me figure out a new plan for my hike the next day to work around the weather. He picked me up from Tanabe and dropped me at the trailhead the next morning.
