Try the food at Seagull restaurant on the middle beach section (close to Yoma Cherry Lodge) and spend a day just reading on the beach watching the locals climb coconut palms and go about their fishing routines. There are only two dive shops at the moment (one owned by a non-local) and both are unfortunately quite pricey compared to the dive prices of neighboring countries (probably due to low competition/demand in this area). Go to the northern parts of Ngapali beach if you want to be away from the rich Yangon-ians and older tourists that come to the resorts every year. You don't need to spend more than three nights in the area though as boredom can set in after the second day. Not much to do other than lounge, spend money on food, and watch the glorious sunsets. Visit "Today Coffee" along the main road to have a nice, strong espresso and strong wifi if you need to get some work done.
Ngapali is a laid back beach side area. The beaches north of the airport are super clean and clear. There are some good seafood restaurants on the beach. The local fishing village south of Ngapali is a lovely place to explore. Its a true example of local life. The locals were friendly and welcoming, and happy to star in my photos. The boat trip we did was a great way to spend a day. We did some snorkelling, fishing and visited 2 private beaches. We enjoyed a seafood BBQ and some cold beers. If you don't like seafood, it may not be the best place to visit.
Lovely place to stay. We also spent an afternoon in Thandwe, checking out the market and the pagoda on the mountain top. It is probably not the best place to go snorkeling, as most of the coral reefs seem quite dead but it's nice spending time on the water.
Beautiful sunsets, nice and quiet beaches, it's a true paradise. We highly recommend the restaurant Two Brothers, and in second place Enjoy restaurant, both are awesome. It's a great area to finish your trip or to take a break if you're planning to travel Myanmar for long time. Relaxation is 100% guaranteed. P.S. gets a little cold on January, at least for me coming from the Caribbean it was a bit cold.
Ngapali was a fantastic experience. Long, wide, sandy beaches. Great for walks. I would have stayed longer and will definitely return. Very easy place to get around and plenty of food options available at multiple eateries. Beautiful sunsets!
I was super fortunate to experience the local cuisine at both Oliver's Laguna Lodge and at other restaurants. A special mention MUST be made to Mr June's - absolutely the best! That along with a few others, including on the little island that one can walk to if the tide is low but there is a tiny ferry to take you across the water if the tide is higher. The views and location are a tropical paradise on the beach, the water is magnificent, sunsets bring people together in those 15 minutes of united attention paid. The local people are warm and accommodating, offering trinkets and snack aplenty. You can rent a scooter for the day or travel by Tuk Tuk. There honestly isn't a night life except going to the different restaurants but be warned that their last orders are usually taken around 20h00. Seafood and salads are the name of the game in most cuisine, Rhakine style spicy is one to try out if you are feeling adventurous. I also have to mention the Chinese Beef Noodles at the Chinese restaurant - simple but some of the best noodles I have ever had in my life. Alcohol may vary but fresh coconuts are absolutely sublime. If you want, most places allow corkage, so just go buy your wine at the local liquor store on the way to your restaurant. I highly recommend trying out the smaller delicacies available at the street food vendors. Life is an adventure at Ngapali - a little slice of heaven - without the massive crowds of other SE Asian countries.
