Amazing mountains but hiking is not well established and they try to keep tourists to a couple of specific spots. I think some mountains are off limits due to military but with some modern and professional tourism development, the potential to unlock these impressive mountains and forests is amazing.
I loved being on the island and was hit hard by what I saw in the museum and historical prisons. Definitely worth checking out.
I would have to say that the beaches are average and if you're an explorer looking for isolated little bays etc., you'll find some beautiful places decorated with all sorts of plastic ranging in colour and age.
When i go there again - which I will in better weather - I will get out on the water and find places to go diving and island hopping.
A really nice place with lots of "potential" if developed properly. I'll be back as there is plenty to explore...

Very peaceful and quiet island with lovely beaches.
Very peaceful and quiet island with lovely beaches. The snorkeling was okay but as the ocean was quite rough we had to go to different islands than the ones recommended. Maybe the other islands would have been more impressive. Most of the restaurants were seafood with huge tanks full of live fish etc....not really our thing. We discovered Bar 200 and Ula Cafe. Both had great food and happy friendly staff.

Very small island, better rent a motorbike, but many small taxi,
Very good beach and seaside, no traffic. It's a good place to relax.
It's a very important place for Vietnamese people, for Vietnam History.
The museum and the prison must to be visited and Vo Thi Sau grave.

The main warning: do NOT use ferry boat to go there.
The main warning: do NOT use ferry boat to go there. It is 4-4.5 hours of vomiting for entire boat. 7/9 right next to me were vomiting. Sorry for starting from such a nasty details, but you should be aware of it :)
This island is very different from the rest of Vietnam, because comparing with the rest of Vietnam it is nearly empty :) And that's awesome! Road traffic is very low.
At the same time I had a feeling that entire island is targeting local customers, who came to visit prison, to respect memory of their relatives, who passed away there. Because of that, huge amount of shops are selling stuff for bringing it to tomb or church.
As a consequence of point above, it is very-very difficult to find non-local food. I would say 99% places offer only local food.
Another consequence is that noise from locals in night and early morning time (starting from 4-5 am when they wake up): karaoke, just shouting on the street, shouting behind your door in hotel, etc., etc.
Make sure you have earplugs, though they not always help.
I think the best you can do on this island is to rent motorbike and explore it yourself. There are quite some places with really amazing view! And not crowded. Again, it is unbelievable for Vietnam :) If you are in diving, most probably you can do it there as well.

The historical prison, the one thing we were looking forward to seeing on this island was closed. The beaches and nature trails are so beautiful, but the island seems a bit soul less. a few beach bars or restaurants that play live music would be so nice.

Great hotels with friendly and professional staff.
Great hotels with friendly and professional staff. Some of the best service in Vietnam. Incredible scenery. The water is crystal clear. Getting around the island was easy. Taxis were reasonably priced and driving around on a rented motorbike was fun. The highlight for me was visiting the grave of Vo Thi Sau at dusk. It was a very special experience. Also, do yourself a favor and go to the Beach House restaurant. Its run by talented people and I almost stayed an extra day just to eat there one more time. Finally, the helicopter ride back to Vung Tau was great. Well worth the money. No major complaints but there aren't too many accessible beaches on the island so I wish I had spent more time at Dam Trau Beach near the airport. I also wish I had prepared better for the nature walk in the national park. Next time, I'll bring my own snorkel gear and hiking shoes. Also, the island is full of dogs and a few noisy people which makes it hard to get a good night's sleep. Otherwise, it's well worth a visit. Unfortunately, the Vung Tau Ferry only runs once a week which makes it pretty useless, especially when their staff don't bother to update the schedule. I'm not sure what's going on there.
The Secret was by far the most memorable experience in my Vietnam holiday. The accommodation is excellent, and the customer service is outstanding. I didn’t want to leave! The island is beautiful and unspoiled, and people are so friendly. I need to thank Anah and Thanh and staff who made our anniversary memorable with handmade turtles, cards, swan towels and cake. Thank you
Breakfast was excellent most days. We were there for the Lunar new year holiday so for a few days selection was restricted. The service was first class.
The hotel is clean and cosy, the room we had was bigger than the other places we had in Vietnam. The owner was always smiling and trying to support us (and drove with me a couple of times in the city trying to find a place where to exchange money on Saturday as the bank is closed). She always gives us fruits or some other food. Totally recommend the place - the best value for money you will find on the island.
The hosts are a young couple and extremely friendly and helpful. Their Café just at the homestay is the best place to be on the island for Filtercoffee, the best fruit juices, Coconut Coffees and the Fruit Yogurt. We didn't find any comparable in our trip through SouthVietnam. It is very clean, quiet and very nicely decorated to have chilled evenings just like on the pictures. My best recommendation!
The staff were very friendly and went out of their way to be helpful and to make the stay positive. A couple staff speak a little English, so you probably want to have Google Translate at the ready. I think if the weather had not been stormy we would have enjoyed the pool and that the hotel was right on it's own beach. However, the weather left us with very limited options on the island.
Loved the ocean view. The pool area was very enjoyable. We took advantage of the happy hour specials in the lounge. The breakfast buffet was extensive. Our bed was comfortable and the bathroom was spacious. We rented a scooter and were able to take advantage of exploring the island. Anh at the front desk was amazing! She looked out for us and a couple of other staff also spoke English.
We totally recommend staying at Hotel de Condor. It's great value for money. The room was comfortable and the outside area in the back of the hotel is very beautiful! We enjoyed our breakfast there every morning which has a variety of vietnamese dishes but also a baguette with eggs and bacon, which we loved. Last but not least, the staff are super helpful and nice.
Overall a good choice for a stay in Con Dao. Quite central location near to the supermarket and walking distance to many good seafood restaurants and the beach promenade.
Big comfortable bed, clean bathroom with hot shower, roomservice. Friendly staff who can help to book transport or rent a bike.
Large rooms that were cleaned to a high standard. Scooters available for rent were nearly new, not the usual rough old scooters you rent around Vietnam. 20 min walk to the beach or a short scooter ride. Good central location in the town. Some hotel staff speak excellent English.
Very relaxed place and Hotel. The owner is very nice and relaxed. He also helps with the Transfer and rents scooter. The hotel is perfectly locaded begween the Sea and the City. If you want to have a quite time, Con Dao and this place is the right.
The hotel is very nice and comfortable, located in the center close by to the beach and main attractions on the island.
We rented a scooter as well and it was well maintained and smooth ride.
The owner was very cooperative and responsive.
Incredible premises - we stayed almost the entire duration of our trip. Great private beach, beautiful pool design, beautiful restaurant, lots of options for outdoor seating. Room and bathroom are generously sized, chic and comfortable.
The place is central located within walking distance of everything. The woman running the hotel also runs a market downstairs making it convenient to grab whatever you need. She is very nice and helpful.
The staff were all very warm and personable, ready to help. I liked that there was also a private beach and a lovely view from our room. We were also able to rent a motorbike to explore the island.
Best breakfast we had in Vietnam, the staff were so attentive to ensure we had everything we needed. Really good quality for the price. Rooms spotlessly clean and beds very comfortable
nice new hotel, the staff were super awesome and very kind. views from the pool were really nice. rented a motorbike that was good! shuttle from the airport was nice.
