Sitia isn't of itself pretty, but the region that surrounds it is full of treasures from Minoan sites and geological wonders through to highly trekkable gorges and ravishing views. A car is essential and exploring is well worthwhile for the smiles per mile.

Sitia is a small town, not very touristy as it's so far east. You need a car to get to Sitia and it's not an easy drive. However, it's definitely worthwhile making the effort to get there as it's a lovely town with a great beach . There are lots of excellent restaurants overlooking the sea.

If you're looking for a not too touristic, rather quiet place (of course, worth the compulsory beach bars and restaurants area), not too expensive but still nice and with friendly locals, that's your place.
Not much to see/ visit in the city itself (not to say nothing at all) and also not the side of the island with a lot of stuff but I bet if you rent a car and go to Agios Nicolaos or the villages around you'll have a great time. Some stunning views on the way too!

I cannot tell if Sitia beach is good or bad, but on the eastern side of the island 20-30 km-s away there are fantastic beaches for sure.
The view of the town from the east is wonderful.
The stairs inside the town, with cats on them are charming.
The people are kind.
I could rent a car cheap, and travel around. I have seen nice places, for example the Toplou monastery...

Cute city, lovely beaches.
Cute city, lovely beaches. Kalamia beach had great vibes, music, best Greek yogurt.
Very very very steep and narrow roads. If you're not proficient with stick shift, get automatic or don't drive. Very scary to drive.
Otherwise if you are good with walked, great Greek village. Lots of nice restaurants.
Simple.
Everything about Maria's place is wonderful. The welcome, the amenities, the spa facilities, the location and the bed. Best nights sleep we had on Crete while on our road trip. We wished we could have stayed longer. Sitia is a very pleasant town and with easy access to highlights in the east of Crete: Zakros Palace and Gorge, Vai beach and the ruins at Itanos and beach + many more. If you want to stay somewhere for a trip to the east. This is the perfect base. Thank you Maria!
Excellent hospitality! The house was great!! Very big and very clean, ideal for family and friends. The location was excellent, very close to Sitia and the very nice beaches of this part. Mrs Foteini and her family were the absolute hostesses. They brought us fresh fruits and traditional raki and their wine :) ah! Also delicious kalitsounia. In general everything was perfect! Definitely we will go again!
The staff was super welcoming and gave us plenty of suggestions about restaurants, activities and places to visit. We left the car in the public parking bear the beach and walked to the hotel - that was for the best, as the streets in the old town are quite narrow. The hotel looks a bit dated, but we actually got a comfortable, upper floor room with amazing view over the city and the sea.
The accomodation is very nice, clean, modern and well equipped. Everything you need is there. The owner was very friendly and waited for us with welcome snacks and chilled drinks. He speaks English very well, and we got some recommendations about the best restaurants in town. If you are looking for accomodation in East Crete, I recommend this place!
The flat was very clean and cute, and we loved the balcony view to the harbour and from where you could see the sunrise in the morning. It was also located perfectly in the heart of Sitia, with lots of small stores, cafes and taverns around. The owners were very friendly and suggested some restaurants.
We had a really enjoyable stay at Sitia Bay. The hotel is in a nice quiet, sea-front location at the edge of the town, but everything is easily reachable on foot within minutes. The rooms were comfortable, the breakfast was delicious & the pool was a good size. We would definitely recommend it.
Location of the hotel, comfortable rooms with balcony looking at pool area and out to sea.
Professional and friendly staff. Great variety for breakfast. Also great variety and food for dinner.
Quiet location, an easy walk into town and the bus depot. Highly recommended.
Spacious, clean (immaculate!), the best bed I have slept in in all of Greece, walking distance from the town, kitchen facilities, gorgeous flowers and trees, spacious terrace, comfortable beach with service, the lovely restaurant in front… I loved everything!
A very nice apartment located on the heights of Sitia, with great views.
It really felt at home: the care of Mary and her brother Kostas to make sure we have everything we needed. A cleaning happens every 2 days, which was the cherry on the cake.
Nice family run Guesthouse on the edge of town overlooking the small Port with views of the arriving and departing ferries. If using the ferry it's a perfect destination.Comfortable, clean, spacious room with nice balcony view.Reasonably priced.
The hotel is located in front of the water in the heart of the town. Free parking is provided in the back of the hotel, which is very convenient. The staff is very polite and professional. The rooms are spacious, clean and quiet.
The location of the hotel was excellent for walking the port. Close to restaurants and shops. The bed and pillows were perfect for sleeping and we had a beautiful view of the sea. Breakfast was good too
the apartment was clean, bright, and had a lovely view. the kitchen was well stocked, and Manos was very responsive. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to other Sitia travelers.
Perfect location in the center of Sitia and next to the beach. Nice room, Simple but clean and comfortable. The breakfast was great. The pool on the roof top is really is a find.
Location was excellent, breakfast was good, staff were excellent, overall the hotel was clean and comfortable and as my wife is disabled they couldn't have done more for us.
Pleasant old style Greek hotel, clean, comfortable, friendly. There is a drying rack provided on room balconies. The front desk staff were particularly helpful.
Exceptional cottage in a mountain village overlooking Sitia Bay. Well furnished and comfortable. Very helpful host. Lot of nice gifts, very recommended.
