This was an exceptional five star 'hotel' experience in a beautifully renovated house. The attention to detail in the renovation, the interiors and the presentation has to be admired and in my case was fully appreciated. A wonderful experience in Penha. A plentiful fresh breakfast was looked after by Sara with a caring smile.
Best of all you, after breakfast you see Penha which is on your doorstep and then travel down to Guimaraes.

The castle, the palace, Largo da Oliveira and the surrounding streets and historical buildings make us feel like we are in the middle ages! It's truly magical!

Historic Center is good with lots of restaurants and courtyards. The cable car to the top of the mountain is a must do. It is 7.5 euros return. Residents take a lot of pride in their city. Most of the tourists are Portueguese . Prices are less than in the Algarve. Appears to be great bus service, but everything within walking distance.

Guimarães is an acient town where Portugal originated.
Guimarães is an acient town where Portugal originated. It is quite small. It's enough for the Visitors who don't have any specific plans to spend 1 whole day to see all the most important historical sites in this city.

Some locals call it "The Heart of Portugal" because what became the country of Portugal began it's fight for liberation from Moorish Occupation here. The castle from then is still standing and is currently undergoing extensive renovation. The old city center is nicely preserved and is very walkable. Regional food is hearty and very tasty. While it is touristy, it is also a university city. Pretty lively with a good range of affordability in eating, staying, and shopping.

Guimaraes was a lovely historical town with a lot to see just walking around - historical churches, lots of restaurants and pretty sites. We went to Citania de Briterios (2,000 year old Celtic village) - a short drive away - and loved it. We could have spent longer here.

I only had two days in Guimarães, and I wish that I could have stayed for at least two more. I stayed in the historic centre, which has much to offer in terms of aimlessly wandering around and staring agog at the old buildings, visiting museums, churches, palaces, and castles, eating delicious food, and enjoying artisan shops. I also took the cable car to Mount Penha and spent a few hours exploring the caves and sites, which was not enough time to see everything. Pack a picnic and plan to spend at least three hours wandering around the top of the mountain, enjoying the breathtaking views of the city, exploring the caves and grottoes, and shining about all the people who have been on this mountain in the past 5000 years.
The apartment is nice, big, and in excellent location. Its an old Family house (Grandfather was a doctor with clinic on first floor)
The owner provided breakfast ! which was very nice, rich and covered our lunch on that day too.
That night we sat on cafe and had 'Toucinho do Ceu - Bacon From Heaven' (Guimaraes special) - made from almonds and many yolks (the whites were used to clarify the wine, and the yolks were given to nuns .. and used on desserts).. so this was a nice local food we hit accidently. Old town is nice.
Extremely well located Bnb with a fantastic breakfast and friendly staff. This bnb spams across multiple buildings in the same lovely street, with one of them having tables you can request to use as a temporary desk to do some work. You are also located very close to the main Guimarães attractions and eateries, and on top of a local restaurant that's an institution to the city! Make sure you have some snacks and beer / wine from the Tasca do Tio Júlio, and soak in the breeze as you eat by this great quiet street.
The hotel is in the centre of Guimaraes and in a historical building. The room is spacious, well equipped and comfortable. The price is reasonable. Staff are helpful. I can feel everyone of them is trying to do their best. The staff will explain the attractions with a paper map (although at the end I still google I still appreciate his willingness to help). The breakfast is served not in a buffet style (so I have been asked many questions to make decision/choices in the early morning:)).
Easy walk to the historic plazas with a variety of eating places no matter what time of day. We enjoyed walking the remaining walls of the city nearby. A 10 minute walk to the Palace and Ruins of the Castle. Staff helpful and friendly. We had a lovely suite with many windows overlooking the old cathedral and plaza where people were eating till 1 AM. Double windows made room quiet if desired.
This is an upscale hotel and dining/breakfast area. We felt pampered. Thank you.
Nice cozy minimalistic deco. Friendly and very polite staff. Great a la carte breakfast, with good quality food. Food and wine list at the restaurant are great too, prices are ok.
The spa like the hotel you can tell are pretty new, and very relaxing too, a bit dark to my taste but relaxing for sure. The fitness room is decent, it has the main cardio machines and weights one may need for a basic training session.
We had a very comfortable stay in Guimarães. The apartment was lovely. The space was hard to understand from the photos, but it is very flexible - the second bedroom has a pull down bed - and sliding doors on each side - so during the day the space could be quite open, while then at night, easy to separate. The storage in this apartment was also amazing... if you were planning to stay longer.
Everything at Villa Margaridi is like the loveliest dream you'll ever have. José, the host, meets you upon arrival. The facilities are unique and have their own personality and the property stands apart- it is SO BEAUTIFUL here. This was our second stay and it was, if possible, even better than the first. It is the best place to stay in Guimaraes- one of my favorite spots in Portugal.
this property is nicer than a 3 star hotel! the rooms are very nice and spacious! the garden is so pretty and pleasant! the breakfast was better than most 4+ star hotels where we have stayed! staff was very accommodating! what a wonderful surprise! Guimaraes is a gem - what a beautiful town with wonderful restaurants (restaurants recommended by hotel were outstanding!)
A well done renovation to an old building. The owner also runs a restaurant next door and the food is authentic Guimaraes cuisine. Private
gated parking made leaving to explore the nearby attractions pleasant since I did not have to worry about finding parking.
A gorgeous boutique hotel outside Guimarães. We loved the outdoor space next to the infinity edge pool. Breakfast was great and having cocktails after a long day of exploring was perfect. Wished we had stayed an extra night. 💜
Very nice hotel directly downtown Guimaraes - easy to reach, perfect base to walk in and out of downtown. We had two very nice, clean rooms with lots of lights towards the Western side and enjoyed our stay very much.
Property is clean. The hotel is large and very spacious. The pool is very good. Breakfast selection is great. The quality if the food at the restaurant is exceptional although the portions are quite small.
The rooms were ok, according to what you pay. Easy to reach the city center walking and free parking space available. The staff was nice but the hotel needs some renovation. The room was quiet...
I liked the service from the reception, the availability of a few free parking spaces in front of the hotel, as well as the proximity with a supermarket and the historic city center.
The hotel is quite central and it has got a parking space (8euros per day)so it is quite good if you travel by car.the staff was very nice and let us check in earlier.price is ok.
It is an incredible hotel at a good location. The rooms are spacious and sparkling clean. It offers the insights into amazing history of the place (noble rooms, backyard).
The staff is very friendly and helpful, the hotel is 5 minutes walking to the city center, the room was spacious and clean and the furniture well maintained.
