Get there early and head to the Osuary complex so you can have it all to yourself. Most people go the other way. The night show was cool, but not required, the daytime is a requirement for every explorer!

Stay in Valladolid and drive-- or better yet stay in Piste- and walk to the ruins and get there when they open at 8am. On the Sunday morning we arrived at 830am, there were less than 25 people that we could see-- total-- and no vendors yet. Our photos of the main pyramids have literally zero other people in the background, and we saw lots of colorful birds and enjoyed the empty grounds.
By the time we left at 11:30am, there were 3 or 4 thousand people there, mostly arriving on tour buses from Cancun, and the vendors were aggressive and noisy and it was less appealing of a destination. YES get there as early as possible.

Always impressive to visit but too crowded and touristy the last couple of times. The parking lot was only available for tour vans and buses so struggled outside to find a parking spot. Had to walk 600 meters to get to the ticket booth. Next time I'd go as early as they open to avoid crowds, heat and parking issues.

Chichen Itza is amazing!
Chichen Itza is amazing! Well worth suffering the heat and bugsI (even in February)
There are lots of vendors selling their wares. I've read that they are not usually handmade, which would explain why so many things were only ONE Dollar! Heard someone say not to buy wooden masks etc as they would not pass customs.
Bring: hat, bug spray, sunblock, water.
C.I. is very isolated. There are tour buses that take you from Cancun to CI.
It's a full day and usually about $120 dollars. Be careful not to confuse dollars and mexican pesos. At this time the peso is about 20 cents so 100 pesos is $5 dollars. I recommend bringing a debit card and some mexican $. ( Can be purchased beforehand at AAA)
Wear sturdy closed toe shoes as it is very dusty and rocky. No stairs, however. If you take a tour, they will feed you lunch about 2 pm. Bring snacks if you are accustomed to eating lunch earlier.
Be on top of your email and messages as the tour originally said they would pick me up at my hotel, but changed to another hotel the day prior to the tour.
If you don't take a tour, I would rent a car. Bus and taxi connections aren't the best. I took a taxi from Mayalands hotel to Valladodid for about $35. Then I took a bus to Cancun central bus station, then a taxi to the airport. I spent about $75 and it took the better part of the day.
Taxi's from Mayalands to the airport run about $200 US.
BTW, the tour takes you to a cenote where you can swim. Bring your suit and a towel, plus water shoes. The trek at ILKIL was about 100 stairs and slippery.
One last thing, as of February 2022, one must wear a mask in Mexico ALL THE TIME.

It’s definitely worth it booking a tour guide as there’s so many details that need to be pointed out in order to appreciate the experience. Though most guides seemed to be asking for 900 pesos, which felt too steep. So we were actually very lucky to find a guide called Miguel who goes around in a little car (as he’s disabled), who charged us 500 pesos and gave us an amazing tour.
Also, you’ll find there’s LOTS of art & souvenirs for sale, and they’ll quote you double the price if you can’t speak Spanish… so I’d suggest waiting until the end and buying whatever you like after you’ve seen all the stalls and haggle!

This ancient Mayan ruin is well preserved and maintained.
This ancient Mayan ruin is well preserved and maintained. Kukulcan is amazing but you cannot access or climb it. Doing this ruin with a guide was essential as the experience would have been much less without the knowledge a guide has.
We stayed at Mayaland just for one night on our way to visit Chichen Itza. The location of the property is really great! Before Covid there was access to the ruins with a 10min walk but it was closed. So the hotel took us there with their shuttle free of charge. It’s about a 7min ride. We also got a tour guide from the hotel and Jaime was really amazing. He waited for us to get breakfast and he took his time explaining everything in English. They also gave us a late check out. All in all, they were really focusing on customer satisfaction.
We loved our stay at this hotel set on a quiet road in a green zone . Nice mexican architecture and although its not a new property it has been immaculately maintained. Rooms are on the smaller size but well appointed and comfortable are well laid out with seperate toilet. The pool area is really lovely and restaurant serves decent food. We enjoyed the early breakfast before heading to Chichen Itza.
We also rented the bikes and rode to Il Kill Cenote. Definitely worth doing.
A small hidden boutique of a hotel! We arrived very late, almost midnight! Yet, they waited for us and got us situated and into our room immediately. The hotel's offering of the best morning bread we have ever eaten, and coffee was greatly appreciated. The close proximity of the hotel to Chichen Itza allowed us to enter the grounds easily and avoid the onslaught of crowds that appear as the day progresses.
The fair price and value for this room is exceptional!
Huge room, nice pool. Friendly supportive staff. Dream-location near the temples, with the sounds of the jungle.
Restaurant appeared to be very good and we returned there even. We don't do that normally. Also, during the day
you can have lovely snacks/drinks at the pool which is great when you come back after some hours at Chichen Itza, which
is really nearby and you can be there, long before the crowds come. We loved it !
We used this hotel for 1 night before we visited Chichen Itza ruins (in walking distance, about 2,2 km ) and super beautiful cenote Ik- Kil (about 6 km). Small pearl, hidden in center of town Piste. Comfortable beds and friendly staff, free parking in closed garden. Small pool for using and refreshing. Supermarket in next corner. Recommend.
The host was very kind and the room was simple but very comfortable. The garden is nice, and I enjoyed eating breakfast there. The house is very close to Chichen Itzá, so you can easily beat the crowds. Overall a very positive experience and I highly recommend it! Much more personal than a hotel.
Close enough to Chichén Itzá for an early morning walk to beat the queues; a short walk into Piste for the bus to Merida; very friendly and welcoming staff, who don’t speak English but understood my limited Spanish and engaged us in a conversation (of sorts!).
Wow! A lovely jungle resort, two pools, a nice restaurant, and cool bungalows. I really enjoyed my stay here! And, it was less than 15 minutes' drive to Chichen Itza, so we got there right before park opened and enjoyed the park before the swarms got there!
The property has its own wild style, very authentic and with jungle atmosphere. Staff were very friendly and fouthcoming. Place has good location to reach Chichen Itza. And has no nearby neighbours - might be good for events (has enough open space for it).
This is a gorgeous, stylish hotel with a lot of history. The view from our room was incredible. Everything was clean and tidy and the food was excellent. The Chichen Itza tour guide organised by the hotel was knowledgeable, professional and friendly.
Nice hotel in Piste, 20 mins walk from Chichen Itza, 10 mins walk from bus stop to Merida/Valladolid. Decent swimming pool. Very nice staff, great barman and very good breakfast which was included. Would definitely stay again!
We loved this modest small hotel. Operated by a family in the outskirts of Pisté, the small town near Chichén Itzá, it was comfortable and in a good location. The family was very friendly and helpful.
Vanessa and Joel were fantastic. Short stoll into Piste. The room was perfect and the pool area was perfect for chill out time after morning at Chichen Itza. Superb and thank you!!!
