Italy’s Answer to Vienna
Near the Slovenian border, Trieste combines the waterside setting of Venice with the elegance of Vienna. The Habsburgs ruled here for over 500 years and built Miramare Castle on a rocky outcrop to the north-west. Their other influences include stately Piazza Unità d’Italia, looking out to sea and spectacularly lit at night.
But this is just a glimpse into Trieste's long and fascinating history. The 1st-century Riccardo Arch hides in a narrow street, and part-way up the hills behind the city centre are Roman theatre remains, while columns from the Roman forum stand next to San Giusto castle and cathedral.
The most photographed church is Sant’Antonio Nuovo, overlooking a boat-lined canal. The nearby Stock Exchange has a colonnaded façade and its square houses some of the city’s shops. The most popular cultural attraction is the Revoltella Museum of modern art, while more sobering is Risiera di San Sabba, a former concentration camp near the Palatrieste and Nereo Rocco sports stadiums.
Watersports include windsurfing and kitesurfing from the port which is an important coffee importer. Unsurprisingly, the city’s Viennese-style coffee houses serve top-quality brews, and the best is reportedly Caffè San Marco, once frequented by famous authors.
Booking.com’s Trieste accommodation includes hotels with pools, cheap apartments by the station and B&Bs near Ronchi dei Legionari Airport.

When coming to Trieste, you shouldn't miss a stroll to Barcola in the summer a really lovely place to share an afternoon with friends having a swim in trasparent and green sea water.
Trieste offers a wide range of typical food but also international options; in the morning do not miss Via XX Settembre with its characteristic small cafeteria and bars with tasty street food.
At night you can enjoy a drink outside the lively pubs even in winter!
If you like caves, there is the Grotta Gigante, not far from town where you can experiment a journey in one of the tallest European Grotto.
Finally, there are also many hystorical and literary short trips you can book or arrange by yourself downtown or in the not too distant Slovenia.

Trieste is fantastic, very walkable, stunning architecture, good shopping, and plenty of excellent places to wine and dine. Public transport is very accessible for anyone wanting a day trip, perhaps if the weather is not cooperating, and it's very easy to hop on the train to visit Venice for a few hours, or to take a bus trip to Slovenia for the day. Trieste is very high on my list of places to return to as often as possible.

Trieste is gorgeous and it`s worth visiting.
Trieste is gorgeous and it`s worth visiting. There are loads to see in the area and you can also visit Croatia, Slovenia, as they are very close. It is easy to go from A to B with public transport (although I found the ticket system far too overcomplicated and be prepared that unless you speak / read Italian you will be a bit lost). Driving is not really recommended for inexperienced drivers as the roads are super steep and most of them are narrow. I would not visit the city with small kids in a buggy, because it can be very frustrating to push a buggy on these narrow / steep streets, but if your kids are older than 6-8 and can walk a lot, it is a great area to explore.

A beautiful coastal city, with fantastic facades and beautiful promenades and squares. Close to good beaches and places worth visiting. An excellent starting point for visiting Venice, Istria, Slovenia... Excellent food in restaurants, which are very affordable (20-50 EUR per person). House wines cost 7 EUR for half a liter, and they are excellent. Extremely well stocked stores.
A beautiful and charming space in an excellent location. We were only here for one night, but greatly enjoyed our stay. The room was very cosy and comfortable. It was great to have air conditioning, electric kettle and a refrigerator. It had a great view of the city. The host was very helpful with giving us directions. Bus number 20 and 21 brought us to the spot from Trieste Centrale. We visited the San Guisto castle which is about a 15 minute walk. Did not have time to explore further, but definitely hope to be back and stay here again.
We (2 adults and our 10-years old daughter) spent a night in the hotel, visiting Trieste on our way from home from Tuscany. It is positioned near the most picturesque part of the downtown and the harbor. The room was clean, spacious, and well equipped. The staff is kind and helpful. Parking places are available on the street for fee or garages are available in the surrounding area. The hotel offers a convenient drop and pick-up service for 20 Euro (we haven't tried it). We had a good breakfast.
A delightful little boutique hotel slightly off the core of Trieste. Nevertheless very walkable to all of the sights. Turning left from the front door and a half block later puts you in the extensive pedestrian area of Trieste. The staff were very friendly, the room clean, the bed comfortable, and the ambience relaxing. The buffet is more traditional Italian meaning expect slightly warmed over scrambled eggs but excellent finger foods. Definitely will stay here again if in Trieste.
This was a brilliant hotel and we really enjoyed our stay there. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the breakfast was excellent. The hotel had a modern, 'designer' style and our room and bathroom were also well designed, clean and spacious. The location, close to the seafront between Trieste's main square and the Grand Canal was perfect with plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants nearby. I cannot fault this hotel in any way.
The warm welcome of the always smiling host Paolo was a sign that we chose the right place in Trieste.
Great value for your money. Clean room with all the small things you need. Bulk of towels, amazing natural shampoo and shower gel (just wow 😊), choice of teas and coffee, many power sockets, fast internet connection and beautiful a la carte breakfast, served warm in the morning.
Thanks for making our visit to Italy simply adorable 🥂
Despite the negatives below, once in the accommodation, the experience was generally positive. The apartment was very spacious and clean, we had a nice balcony, the bed was very comfortable, as were the pillows. The aparthotel also provided a coffee making kit and a few other nice extras.
Location was excellent for getting in and about Trieste, and even during the prime festivities of the regatta we weren't overly affected by noise.
A cosy hotel in the centre of Trieste, we even had a balcony, which was a big plus. The breakfast was also very nice, in a small, but very nice room on one of the upper floors. Very friendly staff at the reception, parking garage nearby at the railway station for a good bargain. The city centre can be reached easily, everything can be found within walking distance.
The staff were incredible - their English was very good and they gave really good advice on what to see and do in Trieste. The hotel was very close to the train station and they also had somewhere secure to leave our suitcases so that we could make the most of our last day in Trieste. The hotel was so very clean and the room was clean, spacious and welcoming.
Trieste is a bit expensive but this pension is a good value. It is clean, very well located and the staff are wonderful. There are nice plants and the rooms are very nice. The location is very good, near the famous sights and the train station. English spoken and that is a surprise for Italy. The pension is also just above the best gelato place in the city.
This hotel is just spectacular! It is located several minutes of car ride away from Trieste. We had a waterfront room with the most wonderful view and an unbelievably comfy bed. The breakfast was amazing. The whole place was spotlessly clean, and the staff was incredibly kind and charming. Also, there's a free parking next to the hotel.
absolutely first class apartment in the heart of Trieste. gorgeously appointed, super clean, luxurious and comfortable. Excellently stocked kitchen and bath. The host is wonderful. This is the most beautiful and welcoming place we’ve ever stayed in in Italy — and we’ve been traveling to the country for 30+ years.
The hotel is centrally located, a few minutes from the sights and the port. There are many restaurants and shops around. I asked for a room with a view and I never imagined that such a view could be possible. The view was over the rooftops of Trieste and the bay. Thanks!
Our room was very spacious, elegant, comfortable, well equipped and clean. Even though we don't speak Italian the host was very accommodating and took the time to explain to us how everything worked in the room. The location is central and great for exploring Trieste.
We have mixed feelings about this hotel. Staff was amazing -- so friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious and appeared to have been updated fairly recently. Location was fantastic -- easy walking distance to restaurants and many sites in town.
Clean, comfy boutique hotel, just in the center of Trieste. The couple who runs the hotel are super nice. When we informed them that we had change in plans, they even let us change the dates with no problem.
A very friendly staff, good breakfast and a very well located parking in front of the hotel.
We got a wonderfull big room with the fireplace.
If you are comming in Trieste with a car, its a good choise.
Very nice boutique hotel in the city center. Highly recommended. Windows have a very good noise cancellation which is a strong plus when you get a room pointing towards the street.
