World-class cuisine is what Bologna does best. Nowhere in Italy, a country with considerable culinary heritage, is the food considered better than in this medieval gem.
Bolognese sauce of course originated here, but to try the real thing look out for ragú on the menu. Cold meats and cheeses are also exquisite. Make sure you save plenty of time for eating – the Bolognese like to savour their food, so a meal can last for hours.
Many of the best eateries and homemade ice cream shops can be found behind the mile upon mile of porticoed streets, now UNESCO World Heritage listed. The complex of medieval churches and buildings in cobbled Piazza Santo Stefano is a tranquil spot to explore. Climb one of the Two Towers nearby (not the one leaning at a startling angle) for spectacular views over this red-roofed city.
The focal point of Bologna is huge Piazza Maggiore, whose Santo Petronio church has an unimpressive, half-finished façade that doesn’t prepare you for its sheer scale inside. Fanning out from this square are the buildings of Europe’s oldest university, founded in 1088 and home to the city’s best museums.

Bologna is a great city escape for 3-4 days. You can easily walk through the old streets of the town, which are full of architectural treasures. There are more than enough places to sample all the delicacies of Tuscany, such as cold cuts & cheeses, pasta dishes and of course a great aperitivo to end your day.

Bologna is a lovely city with many historic buildings and...
Bologna is a lovely city with many historic buildings and museums and dozens of fabulous restaurants. It's also a convenient centre to reach other interesting Italian cities by a short rail journey. This time we visited Ferrara and Faenza. Last visit we had a day in Modena and a few days in Ravenna. Neither Venezia nor Firenze are too far for a day trip. Maybe next time though there's still Parma and Verona on the bucket list.

Everything is great about Bologna especially if you're a young person. Great food, not very expensive and mostly positive and friendly people. A lot of students in Giuseppe Verdi Plaza was great to see. There's plenty of cheap food that is high quality but even the high end restaurants are not very expensive. I found Bologna a very beautiful city. Easy to walk around with many interesting buildings. I am 78 and found walking easy. I found the hop on and off bus excelkent value . I would recommend getting the 2day ticket. There are a range of eateries so one can grab a slice of pizza or have a full meal. The aperol spritz are served with small savoury delights. Very interesting city. Very walkable. The university area is fascinating as is the history of the town - underground canal system, oldest university, etc. It is slightly less busy that other major Italian cities. Great food and nice vibe with it still feeling like a university town (youthful). Had an especially good meal at Da Nello's near Piazza Maggiore. Lots of construction and restoration going on but it didn't really detract too much.

I highly recommend Milleventi Apartments for anyone visiting downtown of Bologna. I have stayed at many of hotels/apartments but this was on the top of the list of best stays/experiences ever. Alessandro was very hospitable and there for every need of mine. He helped us find a taxi at 3:00 am. and then he contacted us if we were arriving at the airport. Alessandro thank you so much.
