What awesome scenery! Cathedral Cove is a must see but be prepared for a very long walk. Do the park and ride option (which we didn't do) so that the hike up the mountain is a lot less strenuous. Once down at the Cove we caught the see ferry back - I would NEVER have made it back had we walked! Absolutely worth the $15 for the ride. (Ray & Megan)
Whitianga is the perfect place to stay on the Coromandel Peninsula. The town had plenty of facilities and we enjoyed using the passenger ferry to Shakespeare lookout. The town has plenty of bars, restaurants and cafes, some of the bars have DJ nights and live music. The town has plenty of little shops, we found everything we needed from a chemist to a second-hand book shop. There are lots of cute little independent boutiques & shops, convenience stores and some big brand names including Countdown, New World and Subway! Plus several places to get fuel. There are restaurants galore, Indian, Chinese, Thai, bistro style and pie shops. If we stayed here again we would rent a property a little bit away from the centre of town, the outdoor DJ kept us away until 12.45 one night!!
An excellent place to stay if you are interested in Captain Cook's voyage to New Zealand in 1869. The Endeavour was anchored here for 12 days to observe the Transit of Mercury and had numerous, mostly positive encounters with local Maori from Ngati Hei. The whole area is spectacular with the added bonus of sites of enormous historic significance. These include Kupe's landing place (Whitianga) so it is a beginning point for Maori and Pakeha.
Our favourite activity was going on a Cathedral Cove Coast and cave tour with mercury Bay discoveries. Highly recommend getting out on the water. We enjoyed a dinner at Grace O'Malleys, generous meals at a reasonable price, with a beautiful view. We enjoyed the closeness to other beaches eg Hahei, Cooks Beach. We enjoyed taking the ferry across to Ferry landing to explore Flaxmore Bay and other landmarks. Great Mini Putt golf course , very well kept.
A very relaxed environment, with lots of family friendly activities. Lovely beaches, bush walks and close to other interesting towns and coves. It's connection to the history of Captain Cook was fascinating
Small town but had most things you would want access to. Lovely beach and it had a lovely peaceful feel about it. Enjoyed dining at Stoked Bar and Grill. Had a great vibe and was across from the beach.
