The Yamagata Ski area (Zao Onsen) is fantastic.
The Yamagata Ski area (Zao Onsen) is fantastic. It wasnt crowded, lessons for kids and adults were AUD$55 for 4 hours, lifts were @4$ per lift. Gear hire was AUD$65 for 2 days PP. In Australia lift passes are $250 per day alone. The hotel Sailor Hutte was literally at the base of the ski lifts. Food was cheap ($10-14 per meal) booze was cheap ($3.50 for a beer). The guys at the Hotel Sailor Hutte were great, make an effort to chat with them via your translator app. Its worth it. One more thing, I would recommend buying Shinkansen tickets directly from JR East rail online. Heaps cheaper than buying a seven day pass unless you are planning to spend 7 days on the train. FYI there are 3 Shinkansen companies East, Central and West. They have there own websites a bit clunky in English but it works. Good luck.

Yamagata is a beautiful mountainous prefecture.
Yamagata is a beautiful mountainous prefecture. There are many places to visit and things to do. We rented a car and I believe this is a must if you want to sight see and time is an issue for you. By car from Yamagata train station, Zao Onsen is about 40-50 minutes away, Ginzan Onsen an hour, Yamadera about 20-30 mins. If you are into photography, there are many great landscape photos you can take here.

hidden gem for sure! its a lovely small town that has everything. make sure to rent a car and drive around the city and the outskirt as well. ginza onsen & zao onsen is definitely a must visit place when going to yamagata.NadyaAustralia - 6.0Scored 6.0

Not very famous place for travelingas not much to see in the city. If you could have a car or rent one, could go more places. Basically in Yamagata prefecture, public transportation doesn't cover much as it is not a prefecture mainly for sightseeing though there are several nice places to go.

I loved the public bath and the Japanese breakfast was exceptional. The staff in the restaurant breakfast area were so welcoming and polite, I have not experienced this level of service in 5 star hotels so 10/10 for them. There was one particular English speaking women who may of been the duty manager who was exceptional in both customer service and attention to detail. she is an asset to this property and her English skills were exceptional.MarieAustralia

Room is what you expect from standard Japanese business hotel. The TVs show you how busy the public bath is and if the washer and dryers are occupied. WiFi was also pretty good. Free breakfast was great. I read another review that said there wasn’t a lot of variety, but there was very good variety in my opinion for a free breakfast. Good mix of Japanese and Western items. It gets pretty busy, though.

The bathroom was big and had a big bathtub. Nice that they gave out bath salts to use in the bathtub. The staff was friendly and helped in sending our luggage forward. The hotel is also close to the station and there is also a supermarket nearby in the Yamako building. Great that you can connect to Netflix on your own account on the TV.
