Convento da Provença, hotel in Portalegre

Surrounded by the lush forests of the São Mamede Mountains in Portalegre, this former convent is decorated with several historic armors, weapons and antiques.

Incredible historical property providing a quintessential Alentejo experience. The property despite historical/old is very well kept, and you can see how much attention to detail has been put by the (very kind) property owners in every corner. The swimming pool is absolutely outstanding, merging perfectly into the Alentejo background, giving a sense of freedom and harmony.

Quinta da Dourada, hotel in Portalegre

Located in the heart of São Mamede Natural Park, Quinta da Dourada offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers.

With the premise that it was raining, which prevented us from enjoying the outdoor facilities, the host was generally available, although I only interacted with him over the phone, as no one was at the property when we arrived, or when we left. weather permitting, the property has a pool, ping pong table, an area where to play football, bicycles available.

We were here for a residency interview with SEF, the immigration agency. We didn't stay long enough to have a big opinion, but the place we stayed was nice, and we had a great vegan meal at Hokkaido, a restaurant in town. We parked right by the castle. The churches were beautiful too.

Small city where you can go anywhere on foot or by bicycle, but consider that is very hot in the Summer and cold on Winter. There are dozens of places to eat and try the rich and splendid Alto Alentejo gastronomy. The Historical Center is not so big, but it's well preserved with some old palaces and lots of traditional houses (Alto Alentejo's traditional architecture). The Portalegre's Museum is a must with a gorgeous Sacred Art collection. It has also an important Portuguese Faience collection and the biggest Ratinhos Ceramics and Tobbaco Ceramic Boxes exposition that I have seen so far. The Cathedral is WOW!! There are 96 fantastic italian paitings from the second half of the XVI century (Maneiristas). Don't forget to visit the magnificent convents: São Bernardo, São Francisco, Santa Clara and Santo Agostinho. Here is a list of the main cultural, monuments and places hotspots in Portalegre: • Historical Center (west side): Castelo Medieval Igreja de São Tiago Palácio Barahona (Arquivo Distrital) Convento de Santo Agostinho (GNR) Convento de Santa Clara Muralhas do Castelo de Portalegre Igreja da Misericordia Sé Catedral Museu Municipal de Portalegre Edifício da Fábrica Real Palácio Amarelo Museu das Tapeçarias de Portalegre • Historical Center (east side): Palácio Achaioli (Politécnico, Escola Superior de Educação) Casa Museu José Régio; Igreja e antigo Convento de São Francisco e Fábrica Robinson • Historical Center (north side): Chafariz do Largo 28 de Janeiro Capela do Calvário Igreja de São Bernardo (Túmulo de D. Jorge de Melo) (Centro de Formação da GNR) Claustros existentes no convento anexo à Igreja de São Bernardo Fonte de Neptuno Janelas da Casa da Rua de Azevedo Coutinho • Outside Historical Center (north): Convento de Santo António (Próximo ao SEF) Igreja do Bonfim Seminário do Imaculado Coração de Maria Miradouro da Serra

Interesting town. Very much liked the Tapestry museum. The Restaurante "O Escondidinho" was very good. Owner speaks excellent English and the food is varied and well cooked. We couldn't resist the "biscuit cake" - gorgeous!

The city is quiet and safe to visit.

The city is quiet and safe to visit. However, the Rede express officer at the bus station was unfriendly. He requested me to pay twice for the same trip because of the error of their officer who put a wrong departure time on my first receipt. He even answered me rudely in English saying "I don't speak English!"

Continental breakfast was supplied to our fridge daily with fresh bread delivered to our doorstep each morning. Friendly staff, and resident dog, Ruca was extremely welcoming and we were fortunate to witness the lambing season, all on site. Surrounded by unspoilt countryside. The historic towns of Marvão and Castelo de Vide a short drive, and no shortage of hikes to be had in the São Mamede National Park. Portalegre is a good sized town with at least three supermarkets.

What a gem of a place!! We had to be in portalegre for an appointment on monday and decided to go a couple days early. I had stayed in a hotel in town before and was weary of short term apartments! The hotel was booked so we found this place. We were SOOO pleasantly surprised. Jaime and his wife were so kind and welcoming. The apartment is absolutely gorgeous, so well designed, has every ammenity you need and perfectly located! We will definitely be back here!

This is a really nice rural self-catering place. We have stayed there before - it's near our daughter's home - so it's convenient for what we needed. I think it would make a good base for anyone visiting the area; it's near enough to Portalegre for you to get your shopping and so forth, and in easy reach of the tourist bits at Marvao. Our grandson is very impressed with the baby goats, as well.

Excellent location, super clean, decent breakfast included in the price, good price, super hospitable owner, very old but good furniture and decorations, gives a taste of old times as Portalegre used to be, very nice courtyard with seats and hammocks… I’m so happy I chose this place. Definitelly recommending to anyone.

It was a beautiful hotel. The room was well done with comfortable beds, linens, lots of wood and tile, and we had a balcony overlooking the pool and farm land. The breakfast was great with made to order eggs and breads and cheese, yogurts, etc. There were also many good restaurants in Portalegre nearby.

This hotel was a great find, hidden in the Portuguese hills. A converted convent, it was as if you'd stepped back in time with the decor, yet the rooms and facilities had everything needed. Our room looked over the pool towards the hills and there was the opportunity to take a walk around the area.

Portalegre is not really a holiday destination, it happened to be a convenient overnight halt on our route. As a result the choice of a nearby restaurant was extremely limited. However the rooms were of good size, warm and reasonably well equipped if a bit dated. A good breakfast was welcomed.

The location couldn't be better. Bang in the centre of Portalegre. 3 Large bedrooms, a superb kitchen, a big shower. But the biggest asset is the location - and the price is hard to beat. This will be my first choice for future visits to Portalegre.
