Had a great stay! Breakfast had good options with an exceptional view. The front desk staff was very welcoming and efficient despite having had technical issues the day of my arrival. The bed was comfortable and the kitchen had pretty much everything I needed.

Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It's an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as the island's slopes and colorful towns.
Founded in 1424, its location allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbor, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.
With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos on Madeira. Accommodations located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, are also available for those trying to avoid the rush.
Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.
Whether you need an ocean-view villa or a small guesthouse, Booking.com has a wide range of Funchal accommodations.
Loved the terrace and the view! We had breakfast and dinner on the terrace every day. The bedrooms are spacious and with ample storage. Beds are very comfortable with lots of pillows and extra bedding. We cooked in a lot and found everything we needed. Large grocery stores are a 3 minute drive away. The location was perfect for easy access to the motorways for all the hikes we did around the island. Funchal was a perfect location to explore the island. We would love to go back some day and would try to stay at this property again.

Stay in the old area which is close to the grocery, market, restaurants, etc.
Take the cable car up to Monte when there is no cruise ships in town, otherwise the wait could be hours to get a ticket and also more wait to board. The toboggans would also be a long wait when cruise ships are in town. Our tip is to hire a cab driver for a day or two, they are worth the cost rather than rent cars. They will take you places not on regular tours and will wait while you finish your hike or other excursions. To adequately see the whole island, expect to stay about 2 weeks.

Funchal is a relatively large city (proportionally to the...
Funchal is a relatively large city (proportionally to the island's size) that has small city vibes; it's filled with history and has its charm.
Though very touristy, you can find many spots with local life (this in March/April). This could be very different during high season. Climate/temps is also great.
Even though it's pretty steep in some parts, the city is very walkable (for those that don't mind getting the steps in), though taxis are a great option to get around
Must dos/pros:
- Monte cable car
- Carreiros do Monte (sled rides)
- Botanical garden
- Boat tour to Desertas islands
- Levada walks/tours
- Private or group tours of the Island (I recommend Hit the Road Madeira - they're the best hands down!)
- Many good restaurants
- the people are very nice and friendly
Cons:
- In some parts the city is extremely steep and for people with mobility problems this may be an issue
- Depending how many cruise ships are docked, the sudden inflow of tourists can be a pain
- 5G towers everywhere (this is especially important for people that are sensitive to nnEMFs and/or give a sh*t for their health - don't forget to soak in the sun and ground as much as possible to counter the bad nnEMF effects)
- Mercado dos Lavradores is pretty but a tourist trap (worth the visit but not for shopping)

There is plenty to see and do in Funchal.
There is plenty to see and do in Funchal. Withing the old town you will find many restaurants along with shops and the old market.
Moving around the south of the island using the public busses is very easy, if you plan to do this, we would suggest buying a multi-day travel tickets for the duration of your stay: available at kiosks on the front at Funchal. Google Maps worked very well with planning trips using the local transport. Travelling to the north of the island we found hard to organise using the public transport is not easy, our suggestion would be to hire a car for these trips or join one of the organised trips which we did avoiding parking issues at the popular locations.
If you plan to walk the lavedas, plan you trips ahead of arriving on the island to avoid frustration when trying to work out where to join/exit the walks.

We really liked Funchal!
We really liked Funchal! HOwever, most accomodations are very noisy because of the road traffic, scooters, shouting people on the street, etc. so one has to really choose wisely!!! Funchal offers a lot, mountains, gardens, elevation gain, boat tours, festivals, nice people and food, and calm atmosphere.

A very calm, clean and laid back city with many attractions, both indoor and outdoor. Wide range of good quality and reasonably priced restaurants. Good walking trails along the coast and above the city which can be easily accessed on foot or by public transport.
A family owned hotel apartment, the owner is a sweet man that takes care of you from the moment you arrive, till the last moment you leave the property. They bring fresh bread to your door every morning, they recommend you the best local restaurants. My tip: let the owner tell you where to go and where to eat, then you will enjoy Madeira from the local point of view and not instagram and bloggers!
P.s: the sea view balcony is a blessing and although you are in Funchal , you’re still away from punks and drunk tourists!
We missed our connection flight and arrived to the hotel in the middle of the night. Despite the time, Nuno welcomed us with a smile and very patient explanations and made the start of our trip in Madeira very pleasant. Also the rest of the staff was very nice, attentive and helpful. The rooms are spacious and beautiful. The hotel's garden is gorgeous and has a nice panoramic view of the sea and was the perfect place for breakfast. Breakfast was excellent with large variety. It is highly recommended.
The hotel, built around a traditional Madeiran manor house, is an oasis of civilised calm and charm, nestling in the midst of an urban desert of high-rise hotels. The facilities were very good and the staff excellent: nothing was too much trouble and everything was served with a smile. Half board food was very good value and portions were abundant. The location, with swimming pool on the seafront, was superb - an easy walk to the town centre. We would unhesitatingly return.
What a wonderful little gem in central Funchal. Only stayed one night due to flight disruption but would happily go back. Staff are beyond helpful and so friendly (unlike one other hotel we stayed in). Room was gorgeous, air conditioning a bonus. Loved the free Madeira and chocolates, a generous touch.
Despite it being on a side street I had the best sleep of our entire time on Madeira.
The breakfast basket was delicious and unexpected.
I stayed in many places in my big travel trip in Lisbon, Azores and Madeira and this was my favorite hotel because of location, balcony, palm trees near and ocean view a little from balcony. WiFi a bit was to weak, but good anyway. Breakfast was included in a very affordable price. Staff was great, was seems that they was tired and work a lot, but I was absolutely satisfied. Well done, just need to do more attention with ants.
The apartment is very a very spacious two bed in the heart of Funchal with everything you might need for a comfortable stay. The host was very welcoming and helpful. Views of the City are wonderful from the balcony where you can sit and relax or eat with your family. Everything is close by including the Old Town, restaurants, public transport and cable car. We had an excellent stay and would return when next in Madeira.
Loved the hotel. Very clean. Comfortable beds and wonderful rain shower. Breakfast was excellent. Staff very helpful with tours and recommendations. On a pedestrian street with several restaurants just out the front door. Saw lunch at our hotel seemed busy so gave it a try and also excellent. A market is just a few
blocks. Cable car, old town and Madeira tastings all easy walks.
Beautiful traditional hotel very close to the old town and all its restaurants. A real Madeira experience that one can't get at all the characterless modern hotels. Superb facilities with two lovely pools and the ability to swim in the sea. Very friendly and helpful staff. Quiet at night - a real oasis- but within easy walking distance nightlife. A perfect place to stay.
Perfectly located in the heart of Funchal with all of the space and amenities our family of three needed. We missed our connection to Madeira due to a flight delay and arrived a day late but our host, Alexandra, was gracious and flexible. Our apartment was bright and clean and exactly like the pictures. Highly recommend!
Restaurants and the town centre is in a walking distance. The apartment was well-equiped and nicely furnished. The host was waiting for us with a heartwarming surprise in a form of fruit basket and a nice welcome sign, as well as providing us with useful suggestions and tips regarding Funchal and Madeira!
The best location from which to explore Funchal! My room had a balcony looking out over the small plaza, which was great. Check-in was easy, the place itself has more than everything you need-- a complete kitchen, good bed, even a bottle of Madeira wine. I would return here if I visited Funchal again.
good location/ friendly staffs/ clean especially Carolina from the reception very friendly and helpful she is number one to our stayed thank you again to all the staffs and looking forward to stay there again definitely will recommend to any friends come to Madeira for their staying 👍,
The location is great, near downtown Funchal with easy access to the highway. It has a great view of Funchal right down to the water with a nice little patio to enjoy that view. The owner was great at communicating and check in was easy. When I come back to Madeira I’ll stay here again.
The apartment has a good location in Funchal and it's very nice.
Close by there is a cenvenient public parking spot (4,50 EUR for 24h) and it is nice that you can use some of the services of the Hotel Madeira (which manages the apartment) that is very close (for example, the pool).
Wonderful time at Quinta B, very great welcome, the bedroom is perfect and the view with the breakfast amazing! I recommend this hotel for few days in Funchal, you will love it.
The localization is near to the old town which is great for the visits.
Lovely house with great outdoor space.
Location is quiet and fantastic being so close to the Old Town and Funchal centre .
Off street parking for those that hire a car
Would definitely check for availability when we return to Madeira. Paul and Sue
Nice centrally situated hotel for people who want to stay in the old town. The room was a bit on the smaller side, but everything was clean and comfortable. We got plenty of tips from the lady working at the reception.
Rooms were gorgeous! Bed was so comfy, everything brand new and super clean.
Pool bar & pool with views or Funchal was incredible
Would 100% recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Madeira!
Had the basic necessities in the house, spacious rooms, lounging area, balcony and a parking spot. About a 30 minute walk from old town, so not too far. Good price for Madeira.
Fantastic hotel. Prime position close to Funchal centre but quiet. Room clean with everything you need. Breakfast in Los Arcos superb. Deserving of it’s 5 stars.
