    Nice little town with good access on a lovely lake with mountains on the other side. Awesome sunsets. Some great temples. A vibrant night market and some cool bars and restaurants. Well worth a visit.

    The view over the lake is very pleasant.

    The view over the lake is very pleasant. If you are riding here by motorcyle from Chiangmai, the road is excellent, with a good surface and magnificent bends. It’s a very pleasant ride. The area is one I will come back to explore more. At night there are a lot of nice places to eat along the main streets. Thinks seem to close down by 8pm, but I may be wrong.

    We loved cycling around the lake.

    We loved cycling around the lake. In hindsight, it would have been best to start around 2 or 3pm so that we could see it in better lighting (before sunset) rather than in the hottest and brightest part of the day. It will take around 3 hours to do this at a slow place and stopping a lot to take photos. The weekend market was the best we've been to in Asia. There are a lot of nice temples in Phayao. 2 or 3 days would have been great for this place.

    Do some planning ahead of time so that you know what you want to see and where it is in relation to each other because attractions can be hours apart! Walking Street at weekends is a treat to all food lovers!!!

    Phayao is a small town on a lake between Lampang to the...

    Phayao is a small town on a lake between Lampang to the south and Chiang rai in the north. A chilled out town with some great places to eat and some old and modern hotels. Its a student town with a bit of night life and some good markets. Theres some nice local restaurants on the front by the lake, they are good value for money, as many locals eat there, you would think you were on a beach. Well worth a visit!
