We liked Hakone very much. It was not clear to us how long it takes to get to the ropeway and cable car and our hotel in. We had no idea it took almost an hour to get from our hotel to all the sights. We would have liked to see the open air museum, but we ran out of time. We only had one day and should have booked 2. Hakone needs 2 nights!!

A stunning rural area with plenty to see and do. The round trip by bus, boat, train, cable car and funicular works brilliantly and enables you to visit all the local sights which are stunning, especially the crater of Owakudani, where you travel by cable car over the crater from which sulfur gas fumes constantly rise,

They had cute waterfalls that were a short walk from our Onsen. The town was small and easy to get around. The streets are a little narrow. Public transportation makes it easy to get to. There was plenty to do if we had stayed longer.

Hakone was beautiful!
Hakone was beautiful! Definitely recommend to visit during snowy days if you like soaking in onsen while it is snowing. It was super convenient to get around with the Hakone Freepass. And getting to and from Hakone to Shinjuku was a breeze with the Odakyu Romancecar! Personally, unless you're really into modern art, I think the Open Air Museum can be skipped.

After spending several days in Tokyo, this was the perfect destination to recharge before traveling to Kyoto and Osaka. If you're going to spend a couple of days take advantage of the Hakone Free Pass and enjoy the breathtaking views of Mt Fuji (pending a clear day).

I was only there for a day and overnight.
I was only there for a day and overnight. We travelled to Osaka early the next day. There was so much to do and see, it would have been better to spend 2-3 full days. We only managed to see some places e.g. open air museum, black egg cafe, view of volcanic vents and Mt Fuji, pirate ship cruise, Cedar Ave (small part of old Tokaido Rd but NOT the old stone road). I would have like to walk more of the old Tokaido road, go to the tea house, spend more time at the Owakudani to soak in the scenery, go to the geomuseum, look at the shops etc.
We chose this hotel for the private onsen in the room which was great ! The hotel also has its own outdoor and indoor onsens. Location was ideal for hiking - we got the ship across Lake Ashi and did a walk up Mount Mikuni and the surrounding mountains. You can get great views of Mount Fuji from the lake (which is a 10 min walk down from the hotel) if the weather is clear. To get here we got a train to Odawara and then a bus (ask tourist information in the station) which took about an hour, and there's a bus stop right outside the hotel.
First, the host. She was super helpful and made good breakfast.
Second, the facilities and amenities. Mori no Yado has everything I asked for my healing stay in Hakone: a lush green garden, a lounge to work and read books, a private onsen room, a musical room with some instruments to chill…
Finally, the location. The house was in situated in a less touristy area than Hakone Yumoto or Lake Ashi area, which I liked. Furthermore it was only 1-2 mi away from the bus stop so it was convenient to go anywhere.
The hotel is situated at a very convenient location - 2min walk from Naka Gora station and it offers shuttle services from Gora station. Google map doesn’t show the most convenient way of getting there so we were intimidated at first, but turned out if you buy the Hakone free pass and take the cable car, it’s only 2min walk from Naka Gora station. We enjoyed the onsen, the free yukatas, and the traditional dinner and breakfast. Very good service and free coffee and sake at the lobby!
As my first ryokan experience, I was very happy with my stay. We had a private onsen to ourselves (altho this was the only room with such) which was incredible - I don't know how I would have fared using the public ones. The dinner and breakfast were delicious and a great taste of Japanese cuisine. The room itself was large, comfortable, and had some great views over the mountains. Also, the services offered by the hotel - shuttle buses and luggage transfer - came in very useful.
Our stay at Kijitei Hoeiso was memorable from the spacious rooms, beautifully presented and delicious pheasant cuisine to the indoor and outdoor onsen. The outdoor onsen was exceptional with views of forests and a river just below. The staff were the sweetest and kindest people. The ryokan is located some distance from the main town, which makes for a peaceful and relaxing stay, but is easily accessible by cab, local hotel shuttle bus and by local area bus.
The onsen is really amazing. Worth the trip to the Ryokan.
The couple who manage the ryokan is really the sweetest. We were told there would be heavy snow the next day and the owner send us to Sounzan station so we can cut short our trip around hakone and then next day when we were caught in the snow , he sent us to the train station. I have nothing but thanks for the two of them. Wish I had a longer time in Hakone!
The ryokan inspired rooms was beautifully designed. Felt so warm, cozy yet modern at the same time. Shower was immaculate, king-size bed was unbelievably comfortable. Honestly wanted to stay in the room the whole day!! There is also a sushi restaurant within the hotel — must book in advance though, and slightly pricey. The location is also unbeatable, about a 6 minute walk from the Hakone-Yumoto station.
Amazing experience at a traditional Japanese hotel. The Onsen were super relaxing and the view was exceptional. The room view was amazing and the beds were super comfortable. It's close to the bus stop so it's easy to visit the main attractions in Hakone and come back. A bunch of restaurants nearby! The breakfast was super delicious and very traditional. The staff is super friendly and helpful.
Traditional Japanese hotel with VERY friendly staff. Breakfast and dinner were great.
Room was very spacious!
Good location, close to the cable car station, easy to reach. We got out at Kami-Gora station but you better get out at Sounzan Station then you don’t have to climb the steep hill with your luggage.
Ideal location for a day of visiting Hakone!
Make sure you check out the Onsen!
1. The location is 1 bus stop away from the hakone yumoto station, ie 10mins walk distance.
2. Our room came with dinner and breakfast and both meals were not too bad. I enjoyed breakfast more tbh. There is a restaurant beside the Ryokan if you do not enjoy the meals or doesn't suit your taste.
3. There are public and private reserved onsen.
4. They also have a vending machine.
Don’t search for other hotels if you are looking for a great experience, feeling welcomed, and eat your dinner or breakfast with others wearing Ryokan robe. The private onsen was great! The natural onsen water, not tapped water, does real magic on your muscles and joints. Special thanks to Mr. Tsuji and Liang for their outmost hospitality! It was a real pleasure staying with you.
Everything was great. During our trip to Japan we stayed in 6 different hotels. Hakone tent was not the most luxurious but it was surely the best of all! We were welcomed very friendly by the staff. Managed to store luggage before and after check in. Room was big and super clean. Had a great sleep on the futon beds. The onsen (private use) was also a great experience.
This hotel is perfectly situated to explore Hakone and the surrounding attractions. We loved the shared onsen and the rooms were exceedingly comfortable. I would stay here again. The service was always welcoming and helpful. And they have a free coach service to Gora which is the train station at the top of the hill.
The property was very beautiful and tucked away right above Lake Ashi. The staff was very accommodating and tended to all of our needs. We loved relaxing in our private onsen at night. Our stay also included a traditional Japanese style breakfast which was unique and fun to experience.
The hotel is located close to the Hakone Yumoto station. This means it is easy to reach and you can explore the rest of the Hakone area via train.
The public bath/onsen in the hotel is great.
I tried the Chinese restaurant in the hotel and the food was great.
Fantastic hotel in a great location, Breakfast and Dinner was convenient as there is not many other options available in the area, Onsen was clean and very relaxing. Location was great with easy access to the boat tour and walking tracks in around lake Ashi
Great resort like hotel to relax. Has shared onsen and private onsen in room. Delicious breakfast buffet. Good location for touring Hakone. Helpful staff assisted with shuttle and taxi reservations. My second stay here and would stay again.
This was my 4th stay at Fujiya - by far one of my favorite hotels in the world
Absolutely love the service, history, food, bar, gift shop, gardens, room service, pool, onsen
Excellent location near Lake Ashi & Hakone-machi-ko port with beautiful Mt Fuji views. An authentic Japanese inn with very friendly host. The hot pot dinner was delicious!
