Nowadays known as the capital of the Greek island of Crete, Heraklion was once the centre of the Minoan civilisation and the port of the ancient Knossos. This stunning gem features rich history, outdoor markets and important archaeological sites.
Just 6 km from the lively Heraklion is the world-renown ruins of the Knossos palace, where according to the Greek mythology Daedalus built a labyrinth to hold the Minotaur.
Home to the 16th-century church of Agia Ekaterini, the cathedral of St. Minas, Venetian Loggia and the Archaeological Museum, this destination is much more than just a cosmopolitan city with vibrant nightlife. Do not forget to wander around the old port or visit the Venetian Walls.
Beach lovers can discover some of the most popular places of Crete like the tourist resorts of Malia and Hersonissos, the golden beach of Amoudara and the fishing village of Agia Pelagia.
The international airport of Heraklion, Nikos Kazantzakis, is the largest one in the island and the second busiest in Greece. Situated about 4 km from the city centre, it offers seasonal flights to Vienna, Barcelona, Zurich and St. Petersburg. Booking.com offers a great variety of hotels in Heraklion.
Heraklio is a great place to visit!. We stayed for over a month and were never bored. There is a very extensive pedestrian area with a huge variety of shops, places of cultural interest, restaurants and snack bars. The local cuisine is reasonably priced. The city is very busy with locals and tourists mixing in the pedestrian areas.
Heraklio is a great base for visiting the rest of the island as most of the major urban areas are also on the north coast. There are very efficient local and regional bus services and of course car and moped hire.
For those interested in history and culture Heraklio is the place to visit. I do recommend reading up on the incredible history of the island before visiting as this will help the visitor better understand the context of what they are visiting.
We visited in March to April and combined a city holiday with a beach holiday. There are two very long beaches very near the city centre.
Almost everyone we met spoke very good English so we never really got to use any of the little Greek we learned before travelling. In one month we never used any cash as all business take electronic payment per mobile phone, credit cards etc.

It's a nice town with a lot of shops, cafes, restaurants etc etc. People were nice. It has a spider-like outlay and you could easily get lost. GPS was not working well. I ended up searching half an hour for my hotel.

Liked the fact there were lots of places to visit in the town. It’s a mix of old and new and full of places to eat. Bus service is good and not expensive but taxis are expensive to visit around the island. People are friendly and most are able to speak some English but be aware all signs are in Greek so when trying to find your way walking it can be a bit confusing if you don’t speak the language. But that’s part of the fun of the holiday.

Seeing the Palace of Knossos and then the Archeology Museum was a highlight! So much history and so interesting. This is where the Minotaur lived and the site of the Labyrinth, as well as the pre-Greek ancient Minoans. On top of this, inside the Venetian walls are a maze of fun streets with shops and restaurants, all walkable. Good food and fun. So very much worth going to Heraklion! Plus an easy peasy airport is very close nearby.

Heraklio is a city that contrives to hide its treasures.
Heraklio is a city that contrives to hide its treasures. At first, we were a little put off by the mix of architecture and the labyrinthine streets and alleys, but after a while, it all became known and comfortable. The museums are very good: the Archeo. obviously, but the Museum of Cretan History is lovely and has a pleasant terrace to enjoy coffee. The standout museum for us was the Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology, which is thoughtfully curated and with kind and friendly staff.

I love Heraklion - I have visited many times and will continue doing so. There’s always something I wish I had more time to visit. During the day there’s so many nearby beaches to spend the day or historical sights to visit. There’s always great venues at night, countless clubs and bars and the restaurants are amazing, even just taking a stroll through the streets is fun.
Heraklion Museum, Knossos and a walk to the port is a must for every visitor!
I went to Santorini Island from the hotel offered tours, it was amazing, the most beautiful trip, saw the Blue churches, dunkies, white traditional houses, the environment in the island, etc. The hotel administration were so sweet, since we missed breakfast due the trip, they provided us with a little breakfast package. The rooms were cleaned everyday, as well as new towels were provided! The view from the room was just magical - one side city centre, one - the sea. Location was better than expected - near the old town.
A very cute little hotel, exactly what you need for 1-3 nights. The room and bathroom are very clean. The staff is incredibly friendly and very helpful. Thank to them we eat at the best local restaurant on Crete and we tried a lot all over Crete. The hotel itself is very central and has something very charming because you can look directly at the harbor.
My boyfriend and I very enjoyed the first night we arrived in Heraklion there
that we spent our last night there again the day before we left.
Thank you Poseidon!
We were Moving around Crete and stayed in Kastro Hotel for 2 nights.
It was in a great location. Close to Port and a restaurants plus shops. There was parking 70mts away. It costs €7 a day. The staff made us feel so welcomed. The price was amazing for this hotel also Breakfast was included. It punches way above its weight.
Will stay there again and will tell friends.

The location of the hotel is a perfect starting point for walking around the city centre and exploring Iraklion's main landmarks.
We particularly enjoyed the direct view on the quiet, fascinating old square and the breakfast served in a very relaxing atmosphere at the nearby cafe.
The room is very modern, spacious, clean and comfortable, with soft beds and excellent bathroom.
The property was recently renovated. So everything was brand new. The point that I liked the most since I was working during the day was the internet which is quite good for Crete. The second best it is the AC system it is perfect. I missed a grill outdoors. It would be good. Lol. The host is extremely friendly. Sent a lot of tips to go around. Made us feel like home.
Our hostess was so friendly and helpful with tips and directions. Her husband even stood and saved a parking spot right out front for us!! The apartment was very clean, comfortable, and cute. We were welcomed with special treats including olives and Raki! Everything we needed was available. This was a great first stop after arriving to Crete.
People at the reception were really friendly, they made a reservation for us in some good restaurants. It's hard to park on the street, also we got a recommendation for a parking (8e per day w/ multiple entries). Hotel is at the good location, close to the city centre. Also, hotel has a webpage with recommendations for food/beaches/bars to visit.
Good Location to shops and all the attractions.
Good place to start or end a trip to Crete.
You could pick up rental after your stay, or drop rental off before your stay.
Near airport. A short taxi ride to hotel.
Close to rental for cars.
Great buffet breakfast with hot and cold food.
Beds very comfortable. Room very clean.
This boutique hotel is new as of May 2022 and no expense was spared. We stayed in 5 different hotels in during our visit to Greece. Everything from a 2 star to a 5 star hotel. This was by far the most comfortable place to stay. Off the beaten path but close to the port and airport. I would recommend to everyone to stay here
Excellent hotel to end a holiday or provide a stop-gap between touring Crete and heading off to Santorini. 10min walk from the ferry terminal.
The rooms are perfect, with and excellent breakfast spread to keep you going. The pool area and restaurant are perfect for a lazy day to relax and soak up the sun.
Hotel is very clean, modern, amazing location, close to many shops, restaurants and 15 min taxi ride from the beach. Breakfast had a lot of selection for kids and adults. Very friendly, professional and helpful staff. We loved our rooms. We’ll definitely come back to stay at the Olive Green hotel.
Very helpful staff who went over and beyond expectation to meet our needs. Location convenient to city centre. Hotel and room very clean and user friendly. Breakfast at the hotel was very good. Roof top garden area an added bonus to sit and relax.
The location was great. could walk everywhere . The staff were exceptional and very helpful. Even made me a coffee when I was at the pool. really amazing. The facilities and the pool were superb. Possibly my favourite hotel in Crete so far.
Charming lady at the reception, very friendly and all shinny and smiling
Good location in comparison to city centre/airport
Free parking at a location nearby but also easy to park around the hotel
Really nice place near the center of Heraklion and near the sea. Apartment is quite big and clean, convenient self check in. Good place to start discover Crete
