Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.
The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.
The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.
The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.
Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.

Our accommodation had the perfect location; we walked everywhere. The nearby restaurants were serving great food. Our street had 2 nice restaurants that were frequented by locals, and the prices were very reasonable compared to the more touristy places.

Coimbra is a great city to visit and use as base to explore other locations in central Portugal. Make sure you wear comfy shoes, the cobbles streets and walking is often up steep hills. The library is worth viewing at the university, but make sure you book in advance or get there early, as they have limited tickets and time slots. The parks are beautiful along the river and worth taking the time to visit. If adventuring out, highly recommend Obidos and the Buddha Eden garden, as well as Aveiro and Costa Nova.

Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers.
Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers. Centro (old part of town) is very lovely and has a lot to see. Many small interesting roads and pathways to walk around and see beautiful buildings, historical churchs, shops, cafes...Restaurants are reasonably priced and there is a variety of different cuisines to accommodate everyone. We stayed one night, but could have easily stayed another night.

the Igreja santo Christo is especially good to visit situated in a lovely square. The adjoining old cafe has a wonderful atmosphere with a performance of FADO (traditional Portuguese music ) every weekday from 6pm

Five-minute walk from Coimbra A train station; online pix meant we knew exactly which building to look for.
This is a charming and old-fashioned hotel that antique-lovers should really enjoy; it's like being on the set of a 1920s or earlier movie, and has an old-fashioned wood-lined elevator, complete with folding bench. We loved the place, but ...
The one perturbing thing was the lack of in-room Wifi, but there are lots of comfortable spaces to connect on the main floor. For a couple of vacation days, though, this was not a big deal.

Coimbra was an unexpected pleasure to visit.
Coimbra was an unexpected pleasure to visit. We had great accommodation in an accessible (by car) area, but removed from the every day bustle. Interesting old town, enjoyable music/fado offerings, good walks along the river and excellent food were all recommended by our helpful and knowledgable host. Had trouble finding parking at first (it's not well signed IMO),
beautiful rooms and friendly staff, a gorgeous outdoor space to enjoy breakfast under the trees. and an adorable hotel cat to keep us company. situated in a convenient location near the university which made it easy to explore the main sites. the rooms were comfortable and stylish. the hotel offered a wine tasting every day and an amazing roof terrace with views. one of the best hotels we stayed in Portugal. stunning boutique hotel, with friendly staff in an excellent location
In terms of privacy and comfort, this was much better than I normally get for the price in Portugal. The terrace is also very nice, and has a nice view of the city. I liked the room, and getting a private sink for washing your hands etc. is a nice compromise between having all bathroom facilities shared, and a complete private bathroom which is usually more expensive. It’s situated in a very quiet area, and the room was very quiet in the night.
Having this linked to Hotel Oslo was excellent as the staff were very accommodating in changing our room as we had expected a sofa bed as listed in the description (as we are friends traveling together & hoped not to share one bed). However, it was not a sofa bed but the staff were very helpful. The Rooftop lounge at Hotel Oslo was an exceptional view of Coimbra & a great way to enjoy your lovely Port! Great location, amenities.
We stayed at Hotel Botanico de Coimbra for several days in July. The hotel was well-managed, rooms were very comfortable and air conditioned, complementary wifi worked very well, and the hotel served a good light breakfast. There is a small bodega and cafe next door which made it very nice for drinks and other items. We very much enjoyed the stay and look forward to staying again in the future.
Large spacious room. King bed was firm like most other beds I found in Portugal. The hotel lobby had a large feel to it as well. There was a feel of a lot of open space. Good selection of gins st the bar. The staff was very helpful in getting a sense of location and recommendations to visit sites and areas. We were treated to an amazing chocolate treat upon arrival to our room. Well done chef!
Perfect location, walking distance to everything. We were able to park our car for free right next to the hotel for the duration of our stay. Wonderful and friendly staff. Nice breakfast delivered to rooms, and welcome refreshments upon arrival. The rooms are beautiful and very clean. The accommodations are uniquely designed in a medieval setting, which made our visit to Coimbra so special.
The owners and staff - Joao, Ana, Janet - were so helpful. They booked an amazing boat trip, gave us an orientation to Coimbra, and even gave us a ride when we needed it. The building is gorgeous - if a bit vertically challenging like most places in older parts of the cities of Portugal. They provided an amazing breakfast - try the pumpkin jam with the bread! - and port and drinks at night.
The property is adjacent to the river. The desk staff was very helpful. We visited during the Coimbra University Graduation celebration and the first night was ridiculously loud with amped up music from the waterfront from midnight to 4:00a. very hard to sleep. The next night the desk staff suggested we change our room to the rear of the hotel. That much improved the noise proble.
You wouldn't know it from the outside, but this is our best stay in Portugal yet. Free parking underneath the apartment, Aircon, great facilities, clean and well organised. The location is actually fantastic, we were able to walk everywhere in the town from here. A big supermarket open 7 days is just 4 minutes away. Definitely recommend staying here.
got deluxe + balcony, very good big room if front of the local train station. close to the main streets, this boutique hotel is the best choice in this city region due to its' rooftop bar that is not to be missed - see the pictures. minipreco 50m away as water taste in all Portugal is awful.
I loved this location the most of our entire stay in Portugal. The friendliness of the people working here was so refreshing. Danielle went out of her way to make our stay pleasant. The generous size apartment is newly renovated and meets the highest quality standards.
The hotel is located in the center of downtown with exceptional staff, very comfortable (though some rooms are small), parking included and has a rooftop bar area with lovely views. Rodrigo was especially helpful with recommendations of what to see and do in Coimbra.
Gorgeous character-filled room, just like the pics provided, and vey friendly, helpful staff. Lots of little details made this our best stay so far in Portugal. Great location very close to university and a short walk down charming cobbled lanes to town centre.
The staff member who checked us in took the time to show us places to visit and restaurants to eat at which helped us a lot. The hotel is in an excellent place with everything around you would need. I would highly recommend Hotel Oslo
