The hotel is a former Convent, situate on the banks of a river. The architect who drew up the design must have had a very difficult task, as in several places he/she used sloping ramps to connect adjacent spaces. However these ramps are wheel-chair friendly.
The Dining Room is the former central courtyard/cloister, now roofed in, and with numerous instructive wall panels of portraits and histories of the Knight Templars, who owned the castle on the hill above the town. (It would have been nice if a translation in English was provided). The catering staff were friendly and helpful, and the food selection was also good.
Our room had a view over the town towards the Knight Templar castle on the hill top.

The staff was amazing!! Though the cost is higher than many places, the rooms are comfortable and inviting, and there are many perks such as a huge breakfast and afternoon tea (basically lunch or an early dinner) as well as a free nightcap until 10pm. Very nice extras that keep you engaged in you hotel experience.

The hotel is in a terrific location, close to all the sights and a wide variety of eateries. The staff was friendly and professional. Our room was spacious and the breakfast was excellent. We would happily stay there again.

An older hotel but well maintained, with reasonable sized rooms and excellent, professional staff. The location is close to the old town, restaurants, and shopping; and a reasonable walk to the university. We had a lovely view of the university from our room. Breakfasts are generous.

Room was very clean, beautiful, super comfortable, very nice shower, towels, bath robes, etc. Good breakfast, including selection of freshly squeezed juice.

The experience was great! It was our first time in Coimbra (2 hour drive from Braga) and we weren't sure where a "perfect" location would be but Vila Gale turned out to be perfect. Just a mere 8-10 min pleasant walk to downtown and quick 4 min drive to the Coimbra Forum (shopping center) and the famous Portugal dos Pequenitos (not to be missed!). We got a family suite and it was quite large and clean. Breakfast buffet was quite varied and well stocked. We also got lunch from the bar and ate poolside. Pool was amazing - even though a bit chilly - but to be expected mid-April. Would definitely stay again.
