A stately city just inland from France’s Mediterranean coast, Montpellier is capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, known for its wine production.
Place du Peyrou, the city’s highest point, has excellent views and has a wide boulevard down the middle of its park. Its west end has a triumphal arch overlooking a pool and on the other side is a magnificent, 18th-century aqueduct running as far as the eye can see. To the north are France’s oldest botanical gardens, maintained by Montpellier University, one of the world’s oldest universities.
Rue du Bras de Fer is a narrow, medieval street with a secret sight through almost every portico, and another must-see is Place de la Comédie. This wide, pedestrian square is lined with street cafes and impressive buildings including the 19th-century opera house. Streets leading off contain high-end boutiques, while cheaper Montpellier shopping options are Le Polygone shopping center and the huge Odysseum leisure and shopping complex.
Other Montpellier sights include the 14th-century cathedral and the Antigone district with its grand Neo-Classical architecture. Also worth a look is the Musée Fabre art museum, and speaking of art, keep an eye out for the brightly decorated trams.
Before leaving your Montpellier hotel to go to Méditerranée Airport near the Cote d’Azur, sample some local seafood. The oysters are amazing!
Vibrant city with a Mediterranean vibe, lots to see and do.
Vibrant city with a Mediterranean vibe, lots to see and do. Excellent Tourist Information Centre that recommended a brilliant walking tour (in English). Loved a free photography exhibition (with English captions!) in the Pavillon Populaire near the TIC. I went to a concert at the Opera Comique and enjoyed good food but, sadly, no time for the Museum Fabre.
For a change of scene, I took a train to the coastal resort of Sete - well worth 12 euros!

The historical centre is quite small and easy to visit walking from place de la Comédie. Very good possibilities to travel with the trams. A lot of restaurants of all kinds and at very affordable rates.
Parc Du Peyrou and the aqueduct is a must see. The cathedral St Pierre is to be seen, inside as well as outside. Botanical garden is very well organised and counts numerous trees and plants.

Beautiful city.
Beautiful city. Lots of "old Europe" feel to it - tiny winding streets, quaint shops, numerous cafes. Very easy to walk but it also has a good tram system. It poured rain on my main day there, alas! I'm looking for places to retire to and Montpellier definitely ranks on it.

I filled my time very happily with a couple of excursions and a trip to Lette but could have done it in six days rather than seven. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Public transport is now free! Frequent trams take you to the outskirts, then buses for onward travel.
Train fares vary with each departure, some cheap and some can match British ones. There were a couple of delays on trains, it is a bit of a wild area and one was delayed for three hours or more as a train had collided with a wild pig!

Montpellier is such a wonderful and popular destination it can get booked up easily! Beautiful old town and other parks and monuments, great cultural life, many conferences and concerts, excellent public transportation, lively student life, and it is close to the beach and wine country with easy access to lively hills filled with history (the Aveyron, the Cevennes).
We loved the location of this hotel. It is in a pedestrian area of the old city. The valet staff was completely helpful with the car and our luggage, thus the pedestrian only area made it even more charming. We enjoyed how intimate and comfortable it was. The staff is simply completely pleasant and helpful!! We had dinner in the restaurant there and it was spectacular! This is the place to go when wanting to go to the old-town area of Montpellier.
The hotel was absolutely charming, inside and out. Very enticing, with lovely decorative touches throughout, including lovely wall paintings on the courtyard walls. The hotel is in a lovely part of Montpellier, close to many eating places and bars. Excellent!
The hotel was pet friendly, and we were accompanied by a dog and a cat. The hotel cat was around also. A lovely atmosphere.
Lovely hotel in quiet location & only 10,-15 mins walk to Comedre. The nearest tram stop for line 1 is Corum. It is very easy to get to the centre if you don't want to walk. Our room was perfect. We had a balcony. The bathroom was good with a decent shower. The bed was comfortable. Alrhough not needed in March during our visit, the room had air conditioning. Recommended.
This hotel is in a fantastic location at Gare Saint-Roch. Taking the shuttle bus from the airport allowed us to get straight onto the light rail and the hotel was so close to the stop. Gare Saint Roch is where all the lines crossed cross so you can access anywhere in Montpellier from here. Quiet comfortable rooms with great facilities and super friendly helpful staff.
We were welcomed by very friendly staff . We requested parking where we could charge our electric car. This was no problem and we were shown exactly where we could do this. Our room was very nice, clean and welcoming. The Hotel is very close to the Corum theatre, so easy to walk to, and easy to walk in to town. Would recommend the Hotel to anyone coming to Montpellier.
Close to Gare and not far from city centre and all sites.
Generous with kitchen extras left in cupboard, good facilities including washing machine and large TV.
Fairly clean and good equipment available..vacuum, air conditioner..( needed even in Oct)
Great preparation of booklet with instructions.
Central location in lively neighbourhood, within walking distance from the Saint Roch train station. If your train arrives at the Sud de France station, you can take a shuttle bus / tram to the centre.
Cosy place with a personal touch, overall well equipped for a short stay.
Friendly and helpful host.
We chose this hotel for its easy access to the city center of Montpellier. That was the only good thing about it. The AC in the room was absolutely terrible, one lift was out of order and the other one had its own mind of going up or down as it pleased. The staff did not feel concerned about any of it.
Out of our entire trip through Italy and France, this hotel surprisingly had the most comfortable beds! Both pillows and bed were the right amount of give. The location is perfect for exploring the city since it is on the doorstep to a large pedestrian plaza in the heart of the city.
Hotel d'Aragon is an exceptional find in Montpellier. It's just steps from the center of this beautiful city, a must see in the south of France. The hotel is wonderfully appointed, the staff is delightful, and it was comfortable and cool during the recent heatwave!
Beautiful hotel in the centre of Montpellier, great location. Our room was big, spacious and very comfortable. The bathroom was also excellent. The staff are very helpful. We would have no hesitation in staying here again, it was excellent. Thank you very much.
Lovely hotel. Modern, clean. Nicely decorated rooms.
Staff is very professional and friendly.
Location is great, considering that the city centre of Montpellier is mainly pedestrian
Bonus: The bar is great and they have fantastic cocktails!
nice traditional French Hotel within walking distance to central Montpellier with great shopping and restaurants. Parking available but in a tight underground garage. There’s a farmers market Tuesdays across from the hotel.
Great location with an easy access to the historical quarter of Montpellier. The price was fine compared to similar hotels in the area. The room was simple but good enough.
