The Simplicity of the Emerald Coast
Olbia is all about the sea, and what a glorious turquoise sea it is. As the gateway to Sardinia’s stunning Emerald Coast, this down-to-earth town is often overlooked in favour of the more glamorous resorts. However, it does have attractions of its own.
The simple Basilica of San Simplicio dates to the 11th century and the Church of St Paul the Apostle is also medieval. The National Archaeology Museum houses Roman ships, as well as prehistoric artefacts from the surrounding area.
Sardinia has a wealth of prehistoric structures and one of these – the Tomba dei Giganti Su Monte‘e S’Abe – is near Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport and medieval Pedres Castle. Across the bay is Sa Testa Sacred Well, dating to at least 1200 BC.
Along the coast in Pittulongu are the real attractions – fantastic, unspoilt beaches from where you can see rocky Tavolara Island, a popular diving site. In summer, boats sail there from Isola Bianca Harbour, the arrival point of ferries from the Italian mainland. The harbour’s fishing boats are responsible for the fantastic mussels in Olbia’s seafood restaurants, some of which are amid bars and shops on Corso Umberto – the locals’ favourite passeggiata spot.

Olbia is a practical town to stay in because you can travel by bus or car to Sardinia’s top attractions. There is a lot of action on the Corso Umberto and surroundings but overall I found only a few good places to eat. The airport is close and easy to reach via public transportation. All in all I would recommend it as a place where you spend the night but you plan your day to day visiting the amazing beaches and hikes.

A trip to Olbia felt like visiting the 'real' Italy. Tourists per se are not specially catered for, although there are tours of La Maddalena from Palau, dolphin spotting etc. But what you do get is a warm welcome from local people. Lively bars, but not thumping clubs. - and the food is amazing, with a particular focus on local delicacies as well as fresh fish and seafood. Olbia is awesome, there are so so many restaurants to choose from we went to a different one most nights when not at the hotel. People are lovely and friendly - a really good atmosphere in the main town. Felt safe and happy when away from the hotel

Nice Centro and waterfront.
Nice Centro and waterfront. Seemed authentic and residential city. Only stayed one evening, but seemed some good restaurants and pleasant to walk around. Although pleasant, was better for transit spot than base and we were glad that we had stayed in another location for additional travel in the area. NOTE: taxis are difficult to come by and did not answer phone on a Monday morning although we were informed they would by a driver. Be sure to schedule ahead if needed.

There’s enough space, more than enough. The neighbourhood is quite and peaceful. We went to visit several beaches on the north coast of sardinia and La Maddalena. There’s a parking spot and the owner, Ivan, is really kind. He’s always available via whatsapp and gives advice through your trip. I enjoyed the bed on the terrace and the stonegrill. Would recommend. We never visited Olbia though.JiriBelgium

The arrival and check-in process was easy and we were so thankful to be able to check in a little early. Our room was exactly what we needed, looked brand new, and was very clean. We had an early check-out but that was also no problem as the cafe downstairs opens very early.

It was close to the airport and car hire, with main roads in and out of Olbia very easy to access. We were able to shop at euro spin and travel to lots of beaches. The apartment is close to the marina for boat trips out snorkeling and seeing dolphins and A day trip up to aqua dream water park with the kids was also a great day out.
