This is a very traditional Japanese house, and so if that's the experience you're after, then this is the place for you.
It's a little out the way and can take a while to get there on foot, but the quiet area is very peaceful.
The beds were comfortable, the dorms had privacy curtains on each bed.
There was an honesty box with a number of snacks and drinks available if you needed food.

Stunning baths and food fantastic customer service
To say the Iya valley is beautiful would be an understatement. The vine bridges, the scarecrow village and gorges are pretty much all you'll hear about and for good reason. They're the main attraction and the reason people go. It's all about the nature and a handful of curiosities like the Yokai museum.
While not the tourist powerhouse of big cities like Kyoto, it does kind of live off of its "in the know" tourists. A new generation of younger entrepreneurs are trying to revitalize the area and transform it into something more in line with their modern sensibilities.
Travel is not easy and requires a lot of planning and preparation. Buses are extremely rare and trains as well. Bad weather can throw a wrench into your plans and mess up everything. Renting a car almost a must in order to visit the more far away spots, but a strong and experienced cyclists could probably do it - maybe. Those hills and mountains aren't always easy! And those trucks get a bit scary.
I stayed in Ikeda-cho, one of the bigger areas of Miyoshi city but still a bit of a one horse town.
But one thing is has going for it is that you can follow the Yoshino river for an 80km ride into Tokushima city. On a nice day, it's one of the best bike rides you could do.

Miyoshi is great.
Miyoshi is great. Spread over quite a few km, this area has so much to offer. I loved the historic elements as well as the scenery/ geography. Most restaurants focus on fresh local produce, and spot on for flavour and quality !

Beautiful & amazing place, The rare grand landscape of the mountains and waters in Japan!!! There are many interesting places hide in the deep mountains, waiting for you to discover, it is a place worth spending a few days to slowly experience and play! And if you hate crowding with many tourists, this is definitely a great choice.
The best place to stay to experience Japanese traditional life. The host Shino san is an amazing host, he really take care and think a lot about the guests. In the beginning he said he wanted to create a good memory for us, and apparently he did with his amazing hospitality. He prepared many activities that we can try and the traditional food was awesome too. The Tamago kakegohan for breakfast was the best we ever had. Everyone should stay here while traveling to Japan! You would never find something else like this place.
Great experience! Loved everything including the wood chopping, making the fire beneath the rice and bath, and making rice balls. Saw shooting stars as we relaxed outside after a fabulous dinner. Shino San could not have been more attentive to our every need. Nick really enjoyed sampling sakes from all regions of Japan. Sorry not to contribute a bottle! We will send our daughter with an offering to your sake collection.
Note that this is rustic accommodation with a composting toilet.
Everything. Staff were friendly and attentive including valet parking service. Hotel was a lovely building in a beautiful setting. Rooms were clean and spacious, staff will make your beds up whilst at dinner. Dinner and breakfast were both outstanding, a delicious selection of traditional and locally sourced japanese cuisine in a very aesthetic room. We only used the outdoor onsen which you take the funicular to. It was clean with beautiful views and not busy during our visit.
Very comfortable stay in an old Japanese house. My room was large and airy. The living room was also large and had two sofas. The kitchen was well stocked with all you need for cooking. The shower room was very clean and had an electric heater to use in the changing area. The owner of the guest house was very friendly. He gave me very useful advice on the weather for a trip I was taking in the mountains. The owner also runs a great restaurant near the guest house.
I can’t say enough wonderful things about Sunriver Oboke. The staff are incredibly nice, the location is stunning, the food is really enjoyable and reasonably priced, and the onsen has incredible views of the river and hillsides. We also forgot our coats in the room and the staff were kind enough to mail them urgently to our final hotel stay in Tokyo. It was overall an incredible experience. This inn was the highlight of my stay in Japan, I already want to return.
I booked there one week before leaving Japan since I never went to an Onsen. It is definitely not the regular kind of onsen and more of the high end kind. the food was original and tasteful (both evening and breakfast) both the indoor and the outside bath were beautiful and the staff was speaking good english.
If you are tall, notify them, they had to change my Kimono since they did not expect me to be this tall (over 178cm you should probably tell them).
Very good place right next to the vine bridge in central Iya Valley. Sweet lady from Osaka who has lived in Iya for 50 years cooks local ingredients some of which she grows herself. She served the local Iya kind of tofu which I was so happy about. As soon as I stepped in the door I felt like it was a place I could relax. Please get dinner! The breakfast was standard Japanese breakfast but the dinner was special and tasty.
We were traveling to Iya Valley during our Japan trip and we had an amazing Stay in this cozy Ryokan. The place is easy to reach from Oboke via bus has clean rooms and the homemade food was amazing. The staff is also super helpful although with limited English (modern technology does the trick though) Stayed for two nights and would definitely come back if we ever are in the area again.
This is a very traditional Japanese house, and so if that's the experience you're after, then this is the place for you.

Traditional Japanese inn (ryokan), includes dinner and breakfast, has hot spring-fed baths (onsen). They were completely accommodating to our pescatarian diet. Multiple-course meals served beautifully. Very comfortable futons arranged by staff while you are out during the day. Location is for visiting Iya Valley, and vine bridge.
I particularly like the interior decor of the room. It is new and modern and yet retain some Japanese elements, like a tatami floor in the sitting area. It is clean and attends to details such as providing a lot of sockets for electrical appliances. It is conveniently located in the Oboke region
This is a traditional Japanese inn. It is modern with good facilities and a lovely inside and outside hot bath. It serves good traditional Japanese food. It is very close to the famous rope bridge but away from the tourist sites and is very peaceful. The staff were very helpful.
An amazing location, large rooms, clean and comfortable. very iconic Japanese hotel. The outdoor baths were very pleasant and a highlight of the stay, as was the opportunity to use the hotel’s e bikes for a ride through the area. one of our best stays in Japan.
Totally cute traditional Ryokan with kitchen and several rooms. It feels a bit like a hostel but it is really charming because there are only Japanese houses around and gardens in a very rural area. Seems really authentic. Nice host and good standard!
The old Japanese house was clean and located in a quiet country setting Loved the serenade of frogs on the evening. Kitchen was well set up with appliances, dishes and utensils. Staff at Heso Salon were friendly and responsive.
The food was excellent. Their dinner was above expectation as was breakfast. We also enjoyed both the private and shared onsen space and the traditional Japanese games you could borrow on the first floor.
Shino-san’s home is one of the most fascinating and gorgeous places I’ve ever stayed. The wood fired hot tub, the traditional Japanese hearth, the view, the decor and the location are all wonderful.
The 4SStay Ikeda crew runs a great shop! The (Japanese style) room was spacious and fine. We loved the 4SStay coffee shop/restaurant on the ground floor. Terrific crew and great service!
