AA Sunderland City South, hotel in Sunderland

AA Sunderland City South is set in Sunderland, 2.7 km from Stadium of Light, 21 km from Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, and 21 km from Sage Gateshead.

No wifi access for the duration of my stay due to my being given the wrong password (twice). The manager kept trying to pass the buck onto me (“did you contact our customer care team during working hours?” Actually, I checked in at 17:30!….). The manager said the Director would also not authorise a partial refund. So, Alexander Apartments is very efficient at taking your money, but not so efficient at refunding a small amount (which would have avoided this comment!)

You need to book well in advance if you want to watch the Black Cats at the stadium of light! There is a nice railway connection to nearby Seaham if you want to visit. You can walk along the Wear through a sculpture park and the city centre is excellent for cheap food and drink.

Sunderland was good, but if you want 4* service at 4* prices don't go to The Grand. Only pub food and you make your own bed and carry out own room service. REALLY NOT ON. Good point, staff lovely and very helpful

Sunderland is a lovely city with lots of things to see and do. The coast here is beautiful with interesting beaches and walks. The people we spoke to were welcoming and friendly everywhere we went. Food was great, reasonable prices and delicious. Will definitely go back to see more of this lovely part of the country.

It far exceeded expectations. The accommodation was really lovely and to a high specification. We had a fabulous meal out at Antico who fitted us in early when already fully booked and a really nice walk down pier in the evening. Struggled with finding DC chargers for car though :0(

After reading reviews I was not looking forward to our stay however, from check in to check out our we were not disappointed. Checked in 1 hour early we upgraded to a superior sea view room, although the furniture was a bit tired and the floor very creeky we were happy with our room. The breakfast was plentiful, hot and tasty we noticed when items were low it was replenished quickly. If we are in Sunderland again The Grand Hotel is definitely a hotel we would look at returning to.

Fab location right on Roker seafront, easy access to both Sunderland and Newcastle. The room was modern and clean and the en suite was nice. Plenty of parking out front and they let us drop off the car before check in so we could go into the city centre and have a walk around. Very friendly staff happy to point us in the right direction and have a little chat.

Acting Manager Rob and Ronnie at the front desk were exceptionally kind and professional. They did their best to make us happy and our stay as comfortable as possible after we complained about their air-conditioning. Definitely would go back to this hotel if in the UK, especially when the hotel is not too busy and their rates are incredibly affordable!!
