Most visitors to Carcassonne come here for one thing: to see its fairytale, UNESCO World Heritage-listed castle sitting majestically on a hill east of the city.
Spectacularly lit at night, this Cité is a restored medieval fortress with 52 towers, 2 outer walls covering almost 2 miles, and a drawbridge providing access to a keep. Twice daily there are medieval jousting displays between the walls. This intriguing castle has enchanted so many that it has appeared in novels, films and even spawned a board game.
Some Carcassonne hotels, bars and restaurants can be found in the Cité but the majority are in the Ville Basse below. The stone Old Bridge, also lit at night, links it to the city centre over the Aude River.
Central Carcassonne also has its own sights including the fine art museum and the cathedral with its impressive stained-glass windows. But its best feature is the South of France way of life, with relaxed bars and pavement cafes, some serving the local speciality – cassoulet. Other slow-paced attractions include boat trips along the Canal du Midi and visiting villages like Minerve in the surrounding hills.
Served by national and low cost carriers, Carcassonne Airport is a mere 3 miles out of the city centre.

The old city has so much charm and atmosphere in abundance with lovely restaurants and shops. The views from the ramparts across the whole area were amazing. The castle is spectacular and well worth visiting

The medieval citadel is well worth a visit, and tour around the Chateau Comtal, however spolit with the array of shops selling souvenirs. We visited first May Bank Holiday week, and found many restaurants closed, and the menus limited to the same at each restaurant. The town has a square with restaurants, supermarket and cafes, again with limited menus.
Canal du Midi, towpath was over grown and a lot of homeless people sitting around drinking. The boat trips were not running at this time. The river was pretty but limited to walking along as there is no path..

Poor trip reconnaisance on my part, thinking I could navigate by car in the city center of a medieval town. Six inches of clearance on either side of our rental car as we cautiously crept down the one way streets. No parking except in an underground garage ten minutes walk away.
The castle is a twenty minute walk from city center, the last 1/4 mile uphill. Great to view the citadel walls and turrets from a distance. Inside the walls, hard to tell which cobblestones and masonry were from the middle ages, and which were 25 year old patches. Lots of ticky-tacky souvenir shops, some appealing bistros/restaurants, a fabulous 800 year old church, and lots and lots of visitors in late April. Can’t imagine what it will be like this summer.

Carcassonne is probably done in 2 days, one for old, one for new. If you are in the old town I would definitely book a restaurant for evening meal as they were often fully booked when we asked, and this is April. Also this time of year we noticed it was very quiet in the week but everything seemed to open up on Friday for the weekend.

Carcassonne is a small walkable city with a romantic castle and a lot of history! Lots of restaurants and shops to explore. Enjoy the outdoor market on Saturday morning, between the old walled city and the "new" city. Bring good walking shoes! Friendly and helpful people even if you don't speak French.

First on the visit list is the beautiful medieval castle,...
First on the visit list is the beautiful medieval castle, listed on UNESCO World Heritage registry, Its history is well documented and presented, the staff at the castle are all so friendly and kind, they tried to give me very personal time during the visit even though my exit after the closing hour was a bit protracted because I had taken a wrong "route" - wandered into the last section of the visit first and did the exploration in the reverse order! The town itself was bucolic and relaxed, clean, serene, and safe. All the people I encountered (* except one lady, who probably was not from this town!) from shops to restaurants to tourist office to streets were very pleasant and honest (when I innocently picked up oranges to buy in a basket, for example, the fruit shop lady spontaneously inspected each pieces carefully and pointed out one of them was slightly damaged, and went to pick up a better replacement for me, which she didn't have to do!) There were a lots of region specific products, as well as international products (such as Italian Truffles, Italian fur products!), interesting and delicious food to eat, and the climate is generally much warmer than other parts of France. Sunny happy rational place like this, which retained "good old France" aspects restores in a visitor's heart rare hopes for humanity! It also seemed that there is a good size of international community with expats who settled down. You can experience exotic encounters here, so, I would not say this town is a closed up, hermetic, mono-cultural location, nor it is xenophobic.
Best continental breakfast ever in a quiet green courtyard. Home made yoghurt, jam and fresh melon etc. Our host Jean Luc was an extremely friendly and helpful host, the place was lovely and clean and our guest bedroom had a king size bed, great mattress and with a super bathroom. The location was great for easy walk to town centre, longer walk to the old medieval city and taxi to/from airport around 10 Euro. There is great public transport system (go to ATAC office for timetables etc) around town and to the old city so no need for a car
The staff were so good. They literally could not do enough for you. This hotel represents excellent value for money and is only a short distance from the medieval city. A great option for those with their feet under them but do take note, it is difficult to get a taxi to take you the short trip from the attractions to this hotel. We had a family member with us who has mobility issues and this was as an issue from us. Once you are in the hotel, the staff can wrangle a taxi for you and do so with pleasure.
Wonderful 3rd floor apartment with balcony and views to the Medieval City.
Two large and comfortable bedrooms, one with a sofa as well.
Super clean bathroom and toilet.
Open plan sitting room, dining and kitchen area. Very well equipped kitchen with microwave, oven/hob, dishwasher, coffee machine.
A few minutes walk to the Medieval City and 15 minutes walk to the old town. Excellent range of restaurants and supermarkets in close vicinity.
Location was great, situated just across the bridge from the old town and close to many restaurants and shops, easy walk to the train station and main attractions. The bed was big and comfortable. The view from the higher floors of the hotel (pool and bar) was great and looks across to the old town. Pool area was nice and quiet when we were there. Water dispensers were good and a useful feature. Nespresso machine in room was nice.
Great location in the center of town. Many thanks to Lesa who manages the property. She emailed a message that she would be able to pick us up at the train station. The apartment is clean, nicely furnished and has great views of an old city square with a well . A great place to experience the medieval city. Staying inside the city walls is amazing Many thanks to Lesa who helped us get to the bus stop.
We got upgraded to a castle-view room. You can see the castle from your bed, the patio and the dining deck. The Sowell hotels have the best location near the river and face the castel.
The hotel is also very close to the downtown where there are a lot of restaurants and shops, as well as the castle. Everything is within walking distance.
It is definitely very good value with the price.
Having stayed here before we decided to treat ourselves to a superior room for the last night of our holiday, as the hotel’s in a brilliant location in the fantastic old city. The foyer is very welcoming and in the old part of the building, which is characterful. Breakfast buffet was varied.
Great location - right by the medieval city. The property was very clean and cozy. The hosts were exceptionally hospitable and helpful, very fast communication. There even was plenty of food for breakfast which was a pleasant surprise. Would stay here again and rate 11/10 if I could :)
In a historic house, great location between medieval city and old town with fantastic views of the city from breakfast terrace. Patrick was very helpful, assisting with delivery of a parcel, generally very accommodating. Room spacious clean, with comfy bed.
It’s situation in the bastide. It has character and the view from the window of the illuminated medieval city was spectacular. The owners had thought of everything down to a first aid kit and insect spray. Truly an appartment, not a hotel appartment.
Good value for money, lovely room, big bed. Tv etc worked.
All we needed for a 3 night stay. Good location in the old town, near the train station, the canal and lots of good restaurants. An interesting walk or a bus ride to the medieval city
Due to renovation, Mercure Carcassonne upgrade our stay at MGallery Hotel de la Cite which was fabulous stay at that fine hotel. Those reviews also match Mercure Carcassonne La Cite as I always stay at the hotel whenever I am in Carcassonne
The hotel was just a 15 minute walk from the medieval city. Parking is good, within the hotel grounds. Staff pleasant. Food very acceptable. We had half board, though our evening meal was only two courses, a little disappointing for price.
It was close to the medieval city and very quiet (although it is quite a long walk, about 25 mins, to the nearest small supermarket). The host was responsive when we had a couple of issues.
Stylish, calm and very professional, this small hotel is located just outside the (better) gate to awesome Carcassonne old city. Staff was helpful, our time here was very enjoyable.
What a great place to stay inside the walled city. Everything about this hotel (restaurant, reception, bar, terrace) is top notch. we enjoyed the quiet pool on hot afternoons.
This hotel is in the middle of the citadel/old town. No cars. Lots of great restaurants. For someone who comes from a very young country, to stay in a fortress is so cool!
Good hotel just outside the castle of Carcassonne with parking in front and basic but comfortable rooms. We had a swim in the pool and enjoyed exploring the old city.
Beautiful hotel, clean rooms and very friendly and helpful staff. The location is perfect, right in front of the walled city. Would definitely stay there again
