The castle, the palace, Largo da Oliveira and the surrounding streets and historical buildings make us feel like we are in the middle ages! It's truly magical!

Historic Center is good with lots of restaurants and courtyards. The cable car to the top of the mountain is a must do. It is 7.5 euros return. Residents take a lot of pride in their city. Most of the tourists are Portueguese . Prices are less than in the Algarve. Appears to be great bus service, but everything within walking distance.

Guimarães is an acient town where Portugal originated.
Guimarães is an acient town where Portugal originated. It is quite small. It's enough for the Visitors who don't have any specific plans to spend 1 whole day to see all the most important historical sites in this city.

Some locals call it "The Heart of Portugal" because what became the country of Portugal began it's fight for liberation from Moorish Occupation here. The castle from then is still standing and is currently undergoing extensive renovation. The old city center is nicely preserved and is very walkable. Regional food is hearty and very tasty. While it is touristy, it is also a university city. Pretty lively with a good range of affordability in eating, staying, and shopping.

Guimaraes was a lovely historical town with a lot to see just walking around - historical churches, lots of restaurants and pretty sites. We went to Citania de Briterios (2,000 year old Celtic village) - a short drive away - and loved it. We could have spent longer here.

I only had two days in Guimarães, and I wish that I could have stayed for at least two more. I stayed in the historic centre, which has much to offer in terms of aimlessly wandering around and staring agog at the old buildings, visiting museums, churches, palaces, and castles, eating delicious food, and enjoying artisan shops. I also took the cable car to Mount Penha and spent a few hours exploring the caves and sites, which was not enough time to see everything. Pack a picnic and plan to spend at least three hours wandering around the top of the mountain, enjoying the breathtaking views of the city, exploring the caves and grottoes, and shining about all the people who have been on this mountain in the past 5000 years.
This hotel is on the perfect.loaction. 10 min walk from the train, and 5 minutes from the historic center. It was a very nice room, clean and comfortable with a lot of nice little touches. Robes, coffee, two small water bottles in the fridge. We had the downstairs room with a private patio, which was nice. The breakfast was really good. Yogurt, cereal, bread, meat and cheese, fruit, juice, sweets, and great coffee. The person serving breakfast was very nice and friendly too. We would definitely recommend this to our friends.
The apartment is nice, big, and in excellent location. Its an old Family house (Grandfather was a doctor with clinic on first floor)
The owner provided breakfast ! which was very nice, rich and covered our lunch on that day too.
That night we sat on cafe and had 'Toucinho do Ceu - Bacon From Heaven' (Guimaraes special) - made from almonds and many yolks (the whites were used to clarify the wine, and the yolks were given to nuns .. and used on desserts).. so this was a nice local food we hit accidently. Old town is nice.
This was the most beautiful property. I was blown away by the 17th century Baroque Gardens and gorgeous pool. Our "apt" was perfect - great style and lovely views from our front porch. Jose and Hugo were the most accommodating, hospitable and friendly hosts. They even added some special tastings for us. Guimaraes is well located as a base in this area. We had such a wonderful time staying at Villa Margaridi! Our highest recommendation!!!
Everything was just excellent, couldn't have asked for more. Spotlessly clean, amazing buffet breakfast for such cheap price, comfy mattresses, safe, spacious and warm dorm, super quiet, historical building in the town centre, so easy to find. Great showers, vast communal areas, welcoming and helpful lady at the reception who gave me a map and lots of info about Guimaraes. Had a perfect stay and will definitely go again.
Location is perfect in the centre of Guimarães. The room is nice with space to move around. The hotel was a bank and was a historical place. It has been renovated especially the bathroom area. I guess the table in the room was the old desk used by the teller which if true is amazing. It has double window to ensure the room was quiet even facing the main street. Breakfast included was fine.
The location is perfect for exploring the old town Guimaraes. Within 5 minutes walk you right in the center. The hotel is nicely decorated inside and staff is super friendly. What I was pleasantly surprised about was the great Wi-Fi coverage, they had a separate network for each floor, luckily with the same password.
The hotel was very enjoyable - friendly and helpful staff, comfortable, well appointed room and great location. The breakfast was good with a large variety to choose from. Hool, the in-house restaurant is excellent. We enjoyed a great out of the ordinary meal. The service was attentive and considerate!
This hotel was the highlight of our Portugal vacation! The property is very atmospheric, especially the patio with fountains and azulejos and the garden. There is a gorgeous church at the property. The breakfast was amazing and served in a very beautiful room. This place have exceeded our expectations.
You have the bare necessities for a hotel for the price you pay. overall it is okay but it's not a place to visit with your girlfriend and/or wife. if you get a room on the high floors you have a nice view of the city. you can ask them for a high floor and they usually provide one.
The room is very spacious with panoramic view over the city. The breakfast is good and served on top floor with a wonderful view.
The hotel has the most comfortable parking ever. If you come with a car, you will definitely enjoy it, especially if you have a lot of luggage
We took a chance on a random apartment in a random town. Had never heard of Guimarães but loved it.
I loved the warm, genuine welcome, professional , well equipped, tastefully designed apartment.
Cool, comfortable, modern, spacious and great location.
The staff was 10 out of 10 cleans 10 out 10 location was perfect the view is lake a paradise perfect place to visit one of the most beautiful city's in PORTUGAL Guimaraes very quit safe perfect for family's and couples very close to city centre.
The staff was very nice. Comfortable hotel, just 10 minutes walk to the city center, nice private parking. Breakfast has good of variety of food and the bar by night is not expensive with a relaxing atmosphere
The room and bathroom were really big. Location of the hotel was great and surprisingly quiet considering all the people in the streets. If I were to return to Guimarães I would certainly stay at the Toural.
It was simple but very nice hotel. Everything was very good and we would recommend booking your stay there. Breakfast was delicious and with a quite big joice. They even had a fresh orange juice.
Beautiful hotel in a wonderful city. Be sure to explore the 5th floor (the old part of the monastery) and the gardens where you can walk up the stairs and be in a magical forest.
This small hotel-appartement is like having your own fancy loft in the heart of the city of Guimaraes: lovely location, lovely decoration, lovely hosting…
