Really enjoyed our dinner at Osteria - Italian, lovely atmosphere, attentive staff, delicious food, very popular. Enjoyed a 3 hr return walk into the Hapuawhenua Viaducts along the Old Coach track (need vehicle/shuttle to get to start) and great area for mountainbiking. Went for a drive up the mountain road with awesome views, and a stop at a nearby waterfall. Then a 1 hr native bush walk ( Mangawhero Forest walk) where friendly little fantails and robins flew about and you could hear the whoosh of wood pigeon high in the trees. Dinner at the PowderKeg - a pub setting with dining area. Again, lovely food and within walking distance of accommodation this time. Good supermarket in town and looked around shops (some vacant as is the case with many small rural towns now) and lovely playground/walkway at the Carrotland Adventure Park, then morning cuppa at the Chocolate eclair shop before departing town.

We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing.
We went to Ohakune to walk the Tongariro Alpine crossing. it's a 35/40 min drive to the car park.
We didn't arrive until the afternoon, settled in then went out for dinner.
Hiked the next day and chilled the day after which we were very glad to rest as the hike for incredible but my body was a bit sore the next day!!
Left after checkout on the 3rd day.
The best place for dinner was the Cyprus tree (book as it getting really busy) it was one of the pricier places we ate but definitely worth it.
Osteria was nice too, cheaper, and had more of a pub feeling.
We went to the Mountain Rocks cafe for breakfast- it was cheap and cheerful. The coffee was very nice.
we had food off the menu but they had lots of cabinet food which looked nice too. Savoury and sweet treats.
Ohakune is a very small town, it suited us perfectly as we had activities to do. Lots of small walks and a waterfall too.

Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter.
Very likely quieter in Summer than Winter.
Lots of walks of easy access, some without a car. Lots of trail rides (MountainstoSea).
Enough shops + New World (small version of it!) and heaps of cafés and restaurants make Ohakune an easy town to venture from in Summer.
Large selection of accommodation, from backpackers to chalets to Powderhorn Chateau.

Ohakune is a nice stop on the railway between Auckland and Wellington. I was there one day and biked the Ohakune Old Coach Road. I could have stayed one day more and done hiking in the Tongariro National Park or done more biking. A problem is the distance (2.5 - 3 km) to walk between the railway station and the new town center.

Nice shops, restaurants, nice scenic walks all around town/...
Nice shops, restaurants, nice scenic walks all around town/streams etc, wicked views of Ruapehu on clear days, excellent hassle free ski/board hire outlet shops. Good amount of affordable lodge accommodation.Although a longer trip up to ski field than whakapapa, I really enjoy the scenic trip up, and road not as intimidating or steep on those icy mornings in a front wheel drive car.
Nothing I don't like about Ohakune 🙂
This time we were accommodated in a family room with an ensuite.
The room was light, airy, and warm with a view of the mountain.
The space was modern and had good communal spaces.
After being hosted previously in a 4mx3m room with 5 beds, it was great to have space to move and dress.
The bathroom was clean and bright.
It was the first room this week where I felt myself relaxing.
Definitely planning another trip to Ohakune to stay at this location.
Great location, wonderful Chalets with all the essential amenities for a comfortable overnight stay. Cosy & warm when we arrived in the late afternoon with the TV, lights and heat pump turned on for us. Staff communication was excellent and we were very thankful for extra time they allowed us to check out due to an online meeting that went slightly over time. Highly recommend the Rocky Mountain Chalets in Ohakune and will stay there again. Ngā mihi nui 😊
This was a great choice for a stopover on a long drive. The location is excellent, the staff very friendly and helpful, and the room immaculate, with a lovely view of Mt Ruapehu. We had all the facilities needed, and everything was clean and new. We also enjoyed the fact that it was off-season, so nice and peaceful, and superb weather. We weren't expecting luxury, nor a basic lodge. This was better than expected.
Very attentive owner who seems to love every inch of his place and aimed to share this feeling with the guests. Every detail in the suite is useful and brings comfort and feeling at home. Jacuzzi is a great option. One and only place for hedonists who want to get more than backpackers’ places usually offer. The Brie in Cyprus Tree is smth you cannot miss, must have.
The location with the view. it is a small space and not completely private, but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Sitting on the deck in the morning, and while it was raining was fun and the beautiful walks right from the door were special. We appreciated Chris as a host also.
Pure quality. We were expecting run of the mill motel lodge but it was upmarket and far exceeded expectations. Alan and Susie were exceptional hosts and really made us welcome. Nothing was too much. Booked us a table at a busy restaurant for a very nice meal.
it was spacious for a studio, superbly clean and has been well cared for and maintained. the bed was firm and not old and saggy as with some motels. Great shower water pressure and instant heat. It was all simple and easy.
Everything is perfect and excellent. The room is big, clean, comfortable, warm and with well-equipped kitchen, balcony and washing machine. Hotel also has shared hot pool and free for use.
Perfect place to stay for our family of 7. Walking distance to supermarket and restaurants. Would definitely recommend if you need a comfortable place to stay if visiting Ohakune.
Hot tubs were amazing, bed was comfortable, good value for money, amenities in bathroom were nice, location was good. More backpacker than lodge but overall was really nice.
