The rooms were freezing cold no heating and it was -5 inside the hotel. They provided us with one thin blanket nothing like advertised, the windows were open and unable to close. We are having to seek medical help as one of my friends has developed hypothermia. No food no drink and the toilet facility does not flush. Said in advert the beds would be made up for us. After a vicious scolding by the owners wife we had to awkwardly make up our own beds with no instructions at all. If you like being shouted at, sleeping on a solid cold floor with a stone for a pillow this is definitely the place for you. Didn't really wanna even give the one star but no choice for 0*.

Nikko is a lovely small place.

Nikko is a lovely small place. The local Chinese on the high street has amazing food, it has a very small door and would be easy to miss, but make the effort to find it. The temples are amazing, but I loved the mountains, if you like trekking then you will love Nikko.

Fabulous place to visit with the right balance between nature walks and temple and shrine visits. Our favorite visits were Toshogu and Rinno-ji Temples, a day trip to Chuzenji Lake and Kegon Falls with a walk towards the Italian and English Embassy residences was beautiful. If you still have time, the Imperial Tomozawa Villa is worth spending a couple of hours at. We did everything by bus and it was very well organised. Train station has convenient coin lockers for luggage and a Yamato counter to deliver your luggage at your hotel so you can start visiting without being troubled.

i loved the variety of hiking trails - there was no shortage of beautiful nature. there are populated trails and quieter trails, and the bus service was very convenient once i got the hang of it. while the shrines were pretty enough, i preferred the rinnoji shrine gardens and would have preferred to spend more time hiking instead of fighting with the crowds at toshugu shrine. senjogahara was stunning and i would have liked to spend more time at the yumoto and kirifuri trails. october was a little early for autumn leaves, so maybe i will return later in the year next time. that said, it was a pity i just missed the shrine festival this year!

While there is the Nikko bus, it is better for a group of 4 to rent a car from Nippon rent-a-car. Explore the supermarkets to get cheap fruits, vegetables, fish, snacks etc. Akebi onsen is awesomein a beautiful forest garden. Kegon waterfall and lake Chuzenji is breathtaking. There are hotels up there but be prepared for colder weather. Ice forms at night. Weather is an important factor. Might get foggy or even rain. But beautiful skies when clear. Cross the different bridges and hike up the hills along the river.

    Wandering around the Nikko area

Wandering around the Nikko area We found a place gluten free place to eat for my daughter as she is coeliac and there are not many places in Japan that cater to her food allergies. Very easy to get around Nikko. Plenty of buses.

The welcoming, friendly spirit, kindest person I have encountered in my stay Mariko and her husband Yosi She is very nice and caring. The room is clean and shared facilities are great. Mariko made us feel welcome in her home, the Japanese home experience is the highlight of our trip at Nikko. All basic things covered with a lots of freebies you wouldn’t expect if you book in a fancy hotels. Mariko looks after her guest very well and send them off with full tummy and good spirit. You have to book if you want to experience this.

The location was really good. There were very few restaurants and bars open in town when i visited (mid november) but it is close to the busline that rides between Nikko town and Yumoto Onsen. You have view on the lake. The hotel and family that runs it are really friendly. The owner helped me to get to Mount Hangetsu since the small busline only ran in the afternoon. The room was very cosy and comfortable. They placed heaters and helped drying my wet shoes (without asking for it) which was like a secret gesture.

For our trip to Nikko, we could not have asked for a better stay in a traditional Japanese home, with a better host. He has been the most amazing host. He speaks English very well. We traveled during winter. So, he made plans for our 3 -day trip accordingly. He was kind enough to pick us up from the station. He has such a jolly personality, interacting with him, will make one's experience richer. We are definitely going back to Nikko in a different season, and we plan to stay at this place again!

The proprietor, Izumi-san, is the perfect host. He greeted me in his private car at the railway station and took my bags to the B&B so I could have an afternoon for sightseeing in Nikko. Izumi-san prepared a delicious Japanese breakfast on my first morning and then took me to the bus station where I could take the bus to Lake Chuzenji for the day. The service provided by Izumi-san goes way beyond what one would expect at a bed and breakfast.

We read several positive reviews and went expecting it to be great. The stay exceeded our expectations. It has a homely feel and they provided exceptionally good vegetarian food. We have lived in Japan for over 20 years and personally this hotel gave me a feeling of home away from home. It does not have the unnecessary glitz but has the best of everything you need for a relaxing holiday weekend.

Lovely big rooms with old world charm. Had read previous comments on staff, but decided value for money and location made it worth trying and glad we did. Giving them your room key to get clean, fresh towels is a bonus in my book, big hotels just use a master key to do your room anyway. If you’re nice to people, they will be nice to you. Recommend the hotel and Nikko.

We needed a simple hotel at the end of a long late train journey and this place turned out to be that plus much more. There is a generous amount of facilities and vending machines, and the breakfast really is great. Staff were exceptionally helpful, even holding our luggage an extra night for no extra charge while we travelled on into Okunikko with just our backpacks.

The room was pretty big and comfortable. In the lobby there are free tea and coffee, perfect for a quick breakfast ! The best point about this hotel is probably its private onsen. Every customer can enjoy the onsen for 30min. The hotel is located on the outskirts of Nikko, very quiet place near the river but close enough to be easily reachable by a small walk.

The best traditional japanese hotel you could stay during your holiday in Nikko. The location is perfect it is right next to the world heritage sites (Rinnoji temple and others). The staff was really kind, they even pushed the elevator button for me! Also the onsen is cute, private, clean and quiet. The cute yukatas we received were just the cherry on top!

This “hotel” (honestly, it should be classified as a motel) was fairly close to both the JR Nikko and the Tobu Nikko stations, which was the only positive aspect of my 3-nights-cut-short-to-2 (because this place was so terribly uncomfortable) stay.
