We had a lovely time in Kyoto and the house was very nice and clean, with many traditional designs combined with modern comfort. Our host, Chika, was extremely kind and helpful - she even had a folder with key places to visit and was always quick to respond to any questions we had. Many thanks to Chika for making our holiday in Kyoto so enjoyable - you are a great host and we hope to come back again soon.

Located at the foot of Kiyomizu Temple, Kiyomizu Shukuba is a 90 year-old building. The building follows the original, traditional Kyoto-style residence architecture, with a living area on the second floor, and a small shop area on the first floor. Shukuba is an Edo-period word the Japanese used to refer to places to spend the night along the Gokaido, which once connected Edo (now called Tokyo) to the outer provinces. It relays our desire to have our guests relax and enjoy the culture, history and craftsmanship of traditional Japan. Kiyomizu Shukuba’s building was renovated to honor the following two points: 1. Introducing the new while preserving the old 2. Emphasizing craftsmanship Kiyomizu Shukuba preserves as many old features as possible while carefully introducing new ones. We runs the casual ,simple restaurant “Kiyomizu Tateba” known for Traditional Homemade-style Japanese Meal-Set on the first floor. Please drop by anytime during opening hours. Opening hours: 　Weekday 11:00-14:00. 　Weekend 8:00-14:00. ※ Only for our Guests ※ ＜On Weekday＞ You can have a Japanese traditional homestyle breakfast in the quiet and cozy place. We’ll serve the breakfast only for you. ＜On Weekend＞ We are open for everyone, walk-in only. You can reserve your seats. * Breakfast can be requested at an additional cost. * We’re closed every days with the number 5 and 6, and have other irregular holidays. “Kiyomizu Tateba” is open until early evening, so you can be guaranteed comfortable, quiet nights.
Kiyomizu Shukuba is well located on a quiet street in the Higashiyama-ku neighborhood, near some of Kyoto’s most famous temples and other historic landmarks. We are at the foot of the Kiyomizu Temple, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site that was established by Enchin over a thousand years ago. Kiyomizu Temple’s main image is that of Kannon (Guanyin), who is believed to save people, regardless of faith or belief. Kiyomizu Temple, due to war and other events, has been burned down and reconstructed at least 9 times. Its history of reconstruction reflects the strong connection between the temple and the people and perhaps why it still attracts over 5 million visitors each year. In addition to Kiyomizu temple, we are a 10-minute walk from other beautiful temples and shrines including: Kennin-ji Temple, Yasaka Shrine, Kodai-ji Temple, Rokuharamitsu-ji Temple, Sanjusangendo Temple and Chion Temple. Gion, known for its tradition of geiko (as geisha are referred to in Kyoto), old style tea houses and cobblestone streets is also just a walk away.
