Stayed in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto and Kyoto felt the most traditional. The other cities we stayed in had huge buildings everywhere whereas Kyoto had a lot of old japanese style districts, plenty of temples and of course the bamboo forest. Loved the Fushimi Shrine area and we stayed near the Nishiki market which was fun to visit in the evenings. If I ever visit Japan again Kyoto will definitely be the place to revisit.

Kyoto station was great and had a lot of useful services (money exchange, tourist info, luggage storage and shipping). There were also a lot of Yamato transports around where you could ship your suitcase to/from the airports. I had a 36L carry on sized bag from Muji (120 cm total) and was able to ship to Haneda 2 days in advance of my departure flight. I would note that they require at least two days for Kyoto to Haneda shipping. Aeon mall was also a great spot and has a pretty large Bandai capsule/gacha hall, Muji, and Uniqlo and the connecting Kaede building has a massive Daiso. Would caution that the buses near tourist attractions during rush hour will be near impossible to get on, I would go up the line 1 to 2 stops in the opposite direction and switch to the correct direction or you may never actually get on.

Both historic and modern Kyoto have something to offer.

Both historic and modern Kyoto have something to offer. So many diverse food options, and historic sites everywhere you turn. The mix of ancient and new is beautiful. Great transit and infrastructure make it easy to hop around, and if you’re ever lost just head to the river (which has great walking paths). Fushimi Inari and Kinkaku-ji both live up the the hype and are worth a visit. I also found some smaller shrines, like Kitano Tenmangu, are quiet and a wonderful walk.

Many things to see and do.

Many things to see and do. The shrines are best to schedule in the morning, most open at 7am, but people don't start moving until around 9. After then it gets a bit crowded, manageable, but crowded. Lots of shopping and food choices at Pontocho Alley and surrounding areas. We tried a tea ceremony and would definitely recommend. Wearing the kimonos make for great pictures. Save money and use the train/subway systems. They're super-clean and run on time. Use the map app on your phone to know how to get around the train stations. Everything is well marked!

The city was lovely and very old.

The city was lovely and very old. Loved the shops and the old houses. However the bamboo forrest was overrated and the temple was lovely but locals were very disrespectful and took away from the ambience of the place. Photo shoots were more important than the culture and religion of the temple. Great restaurants once you found them.

Firstly I loved the look and feel of this hotel, it felt very traditional and true to the Kyoto area with a modern twist. The onsen (traditional hot spring pool) was amazing and felt like a luxury which many other more expensive hotels don’t have. The room although simple was lovely (although it felt a bit smaller than the pictures). Breakfast was good (but not the best we had compared to the hotels we stayed in Japan). Finally the location was perfect, just minutes away from the Gion district and many restaurants and temples.

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel! It’s less than 10 min walk to the Kyoto station and about a minute walk from the convenience store. There are lots of great restaurants in the area and everything is walking distance! We absolutely loved the vibe of the hotel. It was fun to read at the end of the night and sit in the library. They also show different short films at the end of the night. This hotel has a luxury hostel vibe. Really really loved it! The staff were also soooo nice!

This was the best hostel I have ever stayed at (and I've probably stayed at over 5 hostels lol). The location was very central. 5 min walk to stores, 10 min walk to Gion, 2 to get to Sanjo station. The elevator goes straight down to Sanjo station. The location is secure. Mostly accessable by key card. The facilities are clean and inviting. The place is very cute! My sister and I got our own room, and the third bed was used for luggage. For the price, it was very worth it.

Best of the 5 hotels we’ve stayed at on our two week trip to Japan. Beautiful boutique hotel. Lovely stylish room with great bathroom and walk in shower. Had king bed as well and more and well designed space in room. Super guest lounge with coffee, juices and snacks and in the evening beer and wine too. Very friendly staff. Quiet location but walking distance to all key points of central city and lots of little local restaurants and bars if you explore.

The location is perfect. Hotel Kuu is so close to everything. 10 minutes walk to Kyoto Station. 2 minutes walk to the nearest bus stop. Lots of restaurants nearby. The best part is the public bath. It was so relaxing to soak yourself in the hot water after a long day's walk. The outside pool is built of volcanic rocks from Mountain Fuji. That water is magic. It makes your skin so smooth.

Loved the customer service! Location was perfect for us: at walking distance from train station (15min), from city center (20min), from old town (30min). There is also underground stops at just 5 and 10min walk from the hotel. Although the best thing was the breakfast! It wasn't extensive but this made it easy and quick to grab and was actually very complete, with great quality food

Would recommend this hotel when being matched to other Japan hotels. This was by far the best quality we had during our 12 day tour. All were classed 4*. Be aware when staying in hotels in Japan rooms are small. Best and most helpful staff. From station get the number 4, 17 or 205 they all stop outside the hotel.
